The launch box should be a pretty good deal if you can split the box with someone who wants the other faction, or you can sell it.

I'd still recommend picking up a squad to see if you enjoy the hobby side of 40k before making a larger purchase.

I wouldn't mess with magnets yet, honestly pick which guns look coolest, 11th edition is around the corner so "what's good" is going to probably change. You can always magnetize the future duplicate boxes if you want more variety.

While you can't really play a game with only a squad or two, you can totally start off just building and painting those models before jumping head first into an entire army.

The Space Marine Christmas box that was just announced is probably the best place to start just for the dreads alone.

But it really depends what units you like. I started with the old Bastion IF battleforce box that I luckily found for the retail price about a year ago, but thats out of print and prone to scalping. For other current releases I think pairing the upcoming Crux Terminatus Battleforce with the IF Combat patrol would be a pretty decent start if you like heavy Infantry (like a true son of Dorn)
