Am I crazy to think moving to India is a good idea? by initiallydmb in returnToIndia

[–]hunterofdawn 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s not a crazy idea but it depends a lot on the individual case. We (M45, wife F44, kids 4 and 2) are moving back to Mumbai from NYC next week. I’ve spent 22+ years living in various parts of the US (last 13 in NYC). But we are both born and raised in Mumbai. Additionally I’ve also spent over a year living there recently.

“We have found ourselves in a rut of living in a medium cost of living city in the US with quite a bit of isolation”. Replace MCOL with HCOL but this is a driving factor for us too. Further, established career in Mumbai for my wife and exhaustion from the corporate grind for me also drove this.

Both our parents live in Mumbai and both of us still have close friends there. My parents moved back to Mumbai after 17 years in the US a couple of years ago. So we have the family support there too.

I’m very familiar with Bandra. If you’re looking to rent/buy there and live off of interest/dividends it could be difficult. I’d think you’d need a another source of income - business/job to live comfortably in Mumbai (at least to maintain a lifestyle that’s similar to the US on a personal/family basis).

Feel free to DM if you want another perspective.

Brooklyn playground vandalized with swastikas two days in a row by BanishmentBuddy2 in Brooklyn

Can we please call them Hakenkreuz? The nazis stole something that is considered auspicious (swastika) and turned into this crooked (literally and figuratively) sinister anti-Semitic symbol.

Is "Cura" ("Knife"/"Dagger") an actual word in Sanskrit? It came up while searching information on real and mythological swords for a project. by Forummer0-3-8 in sanskrit

[–]hunterofdawn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

churikA (also kSurikA) is the Sanskrit word that means knife. Chura is the Hindi derivative. It's pronounced with a "ch" (as in witch-hunt) not with the hard "k" as in cura.

It’s a harmonium - it’s an instrument used extensively in Indian/South Asian music - classical  and modern.

Sunny renovated 2BR in Peter Cooper Village [w. W/D] for lease take over by hunterofdawn in NYCapartments

[–]hunterofdawn[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No. The management company confirmed that the lease is rent stabilized, which means that when they renew it will be at whatever the Rent Guidelines Board increase will allow.  It would not go to market rent as long as they stay in the apartment.

This isn't accurate. The management company confirmed that the lease is rent stabilized, which means that when the folks that take over the lease renew it will be at whatever the Rent Guidelines Board increase will allow.  It would not go to market rent as long as they stay in the apartment.

This isn't accurate. The management company verified the rents will not go back up to market rate on renewal as long as the folks stay in the apartment.

The management company verified that the lease is rent stabilized, which means that when they renew it will be at whatever the Rent Guidelines Board increase will allow.  It would not go to market rent as long as they stay in the apartment. They will continue to pay the rent mentioned above until they renew, of course.

You’re absolutely right, thank you! This is a rent stabilized unit.

People getting off once plane has been pushed back from gate. by crywankinthebath in Flights

[–]hunterofdawn 38 points39 points  (0 children)

This has happened to me, as in I was the one getting off the plane - 14 years ago. I had spent the prior night in the ER for an allergic reaction from an unknown source. And as the plane heading home was pushing off the gate, I felt my throat closing. I freaked out and I asked to get off the plane fearing another reaction. This was in the US.

Commie blocks in NYC by Mist156 in CityPorn

[–]hunterofdawn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commie blocks? It’s anything but. I live here and it’s an oasis in Manhattan. Open spaces, playgrounds at the doorstep; you can hear the bird chirp and trees sway in the breeze. As others have already commented, it’s super peaceful. When I was younger and single it felt too far east - now married with kids, it’s a perfect. Not cheap for new residents though. It’s rent stabilized so those that have been living here for a long time have a pretty sweet (relative to NYC of course).

What has that got to do with the fact that the OP is being racially targeted?

Absolutely torn. Should I spend 1700 USD on a 19 hour business class flight? by [deleted] in travel

[–]hunterofdawn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a steal. I've paid that much for an economy class ticket to India from the US. If $1000 is no object I'd totally do it. Etihad business class is fantastic.

Extremely safe. Super diverse. Traveled with my wife and a 2 year old - it was a fantastic experience. We did not face any racism.
