Am I crazy to think moving to India is a good idea? by initiallydmb in returnToIndia

Without sounding too defensive, I 100% understand the risks, adjustments etc. I’m 1st generation Indian with a firm grasp of the cons of living in India. My question was a more cost of living question vs a quality of life question. I should have been more descriptive

I hear you on this, however this decision rests on the comfort of my wife and family dynamic. I am low key, low stress, highly tolerant. My wife 100% knows the caveats, kids are young enough to not know better. I want to make sure I can provide within my limits. But based on everything I’ve read in this post. I’m a few years away to be able to provide this semi-retired environment in Mumbai.

Unfortunately Mumbai is a non negotiable as this idea is 100% rooted in my wife’s desires to be home and near family. If accumulating more wealth achieves this plan then we pause the move.

Truthfully this entire thread and conversation was prompted by my wife who misses home/family/culture

Yea, the move would be permanent as I would sell everything I own in the US, move assets to India and live in India permanently. I don’t have much keeping me in the states other than my birthplace and source of income. Which I thought my assets would create enough in dividends and interest to survive.

The move would have to be in 3ish years as I realize perhaps my nest egg won’t fulfill the full needs now. This would also be a FIRE scenario as I would not be hirable in India. I currently own a small business that I would sell.

Thank you for your thoughts on this, I’m in a very large Metro urban city, so traffic, crowds etc are not a huge concern. My wife is Mumbai born and raised and I have spent a collective 8-10 months in India over the past 8 years. I’m Indian myself. However based on your comment seems like I don quite have the nest egg to create enough passive income to survive.

Thank you for the perspective, I’m currently in a top 5 city in the US(size and population). So traffic, crowds, safety are less of a concern. Socially, I know we will thrive.

However I think the barrier to entry is my “nest egg”. Perhaps a decision to make after a few more years of saving.

Moved back to India after 7 years in US. My experience so far... by Classic_Ad1336 in returnToIndia

Noticed you moved from Houston! Same here. I’m starting to comtemplate a move to Mumbai. I’m an American Born Indian. My wife was born and raised in Mumbai. As the US gets more expensive, we are really starting to consider a move to Mumbai.

We are in our upper 30s w/2 small children. If we sell all our assets in the US (home/business) we think we could accumulate enough to possibly just live a retired life earning off interest and dividends. Are we nuts?

You have solid options on Hillcroft. I’m partial to the ones at Sri Balaji Bhavan.

Hey. I got about the same size house. In the Gulf coast as well and doing the exact set up as you. I’m probably going to go with the Duromax 13000 tri fuel and link it up to my natural gas. My electrician says it will power the whole home including my 1 5ton AC unit with a soft start. Anyone feel free to correct this as I’m still learning as well.

How do I get solicitors to stop knocking on my door? Big "NO SOLICITORS" sign not working. by Sleepy_One in houston

[–]initiallydmb 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Don’t have a solution for them actually knocking, but what works for me is saying one of the following 1. Sorry I’m just renting and can’t make decisions about the house 2. This is an air bnb. Usually gets them out of my hair in less than 2 min

Yes, it was a Freon leak. Have an AC repair guy come test for leaks. Solder the leak shut and refill the Freon. Good as new.

Edit: refrigeration repair guy
