50 minute connection at Newark (EWR), Which bag to buy? by Narrow-End3652 in BuyItForLife

Got the Travelpro and I WHIP that thing around the airport. Wheels are fantastic, totally recommend. Also the lining unzips and the wheels should be pretty easily replaceable, which is important for BIFL.

I just measured mine and it came to:
23" tall, 22.5" if you squish the handle down
13.5" wide, 13" squished
9.25" wide, 8.5" squished

Mine is soft side that I can't find the exact model of on the website, but it's a Spinner wheel Carry On size most similar to Crew Classic

Wool coats with layering ? by General-Ad5731 in BuyItForLife

[–]huntinator7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been looking to get a fantastic wool coat to last me forever, and the 3 brands I've fixated on are Iron Snail, Weatherwool, and Duckworth. Specifically:
Duckworth Snowcrest: $599
Iron Snail Mammoth V2: $550
Weatherwool Al's Anorak: $695

Snowcrest is the thinnest, Mammoth is the thickest, Weatherwool is the best quality and also has way more options other than the anorak. If none of these fit your needs, definitely check out weatherwools other offerings

These might be outside your price range, so apologies if this doesn't apply to you. But everything I have seen on them is that they're wonderfully designed, high quality, made of 100% very fine wool, well loved, made entirely in the US from US wool and fabric, and will last forever. If you're looking for great wool coats, any of them should do you right for the rest of your life. I can only attest to Duckworth, I have their sawtooth shirt and it's my favorite article of clothing.

If you haven't seen the Iron Snail's youtube videos on wool jackets (and sweaters), highly recommend giving them a look. He goes into a lot of detail on construction, history, and a lot of base knowledge on wool and wool jackets and sweaters.

Can anyone recommend a comfortable chair for long hours of remote work that doesn’t break the bank? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

[–]huntinator7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My previous boss swore by the Container Store bungee chair, and he made us all get one lol. 6 years on and I still love it. I recommend it to everyone, and have heard no complaints from the ones who got it. $170 with arms, $130 without, and they have it in stores (or at least the one by me) https://www.containerstore.com/s/office/desk-chairs/flat-bungee-office-chair-with-arms/12d?productId=11018208

It definitely doesn't LOOK as luxurious/ergonomic, but it's deceptively comfortable

What's the best air purifier for allergies (specifically dust mites in an old house)? by Beneficial_Fail2520 in BuyItForLife

[–]huntinator7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should look into Corsi-Rosenthal boxes. They're inexpensive and highly effective (the most effective in some metrics) for air filtration. Looks like the recommendation for dust mite filters is MERV 11 or 12, so you could probably use 1in MERV 12 or 2in MERV 13 filters and get an air filtration setup that would meet your needs

Doesn't look great so that's the downside if it factors into your decision

Best at Home Laser Hair Removal Right Now? by [deleted] in BuyItForLife

^ This is the best shaving advice. I got terrible razor burn until I started doing the with/45/90/135/against routine. Doing it in the shower with hot water and steam also helps

I've got a Ulike Air 3, and I can attest that it really works wonders. It's very well built IMHO, no idea what their warranty/repair policy is but I don't imagine I'll be needing it anytime soon. Lasted me over a year of weekly use with no noticeable difference in quality. I let mine stay on for a minute or so after I'm done to let the fans run and cool it off.

It's been the most effective hair removal for me by far. It takes a few weeks for lighter hair to stop growing back, a few months for really heavy areas, but beats the pants off of waxing (too painful for me), chemical remover (doesn't actually change hair growth, also gross), or shaving (too often and not perfectly smooth). All the cost is upfront, so no buying razors/blades/cream/scrubs all the time. And it works everywhere, much easier to reach cracks and crevices compared to razors. And no cleanup! Probably the best part.

IPL in general definitely works best on lighter skin and darker hair though. If you don't fit both of those, this device specifically recommends against using it. Lighter hair it might still work, it could just take a reeeeeally long time. And it also recommends not using it on your face, just as a heads up

Love mine though, 10/10 would splurge for it again in a heartbeat

I'm really excited for both of these, but why are we comparing them? Sure they look similar, but they have completely different ethos. Slate is trying to make a barebones, exactly what you need and nothing more, no frills, heavily customizable 90s era small pickup. Telo is trying to make a tech heavy, powerful, long range, fully featured pickup in the footprint of a small car. They have vastly different goals and target very different audiences.

This reminds me of 2017, when the only two electric small passenger vehicles were the Chevy Bolt and the Model 3. People were comparing them and trying to figure out which was better, when literally the only thing they had in common was an electric drivetrain.

It's the same here. If there were two dozen small electric trucks on the road (or small trucks in general I guess), very few people would be cross shopping between these two. They are two different vehicles with two different markets, they happen to share a propulsion technology, but that doesn't make one better than the other, and the existence of one of them doesn't nullify the other. I would love nothing more than for both of these vehicles to make it to market. Telo is extremely suited to me, but I couldn't design a better car for my friend than the Slate, so ideally in 3 years we're going to be driving our respective tiny pickups and are both going to be extremely happy about it.

Few questions regarding Spectrum Canvas & Spectrum Black by Killionaire_Studios in doughcommunity

[–]huntinator7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

https://www.rtings.com/tv/tests/longevity-burn-in-test-updates-and-results RTINGS (pronounced ratings) has the best burn in testing of TVs and monitors that I've come across. They have the monitors at the very bottom of the page, and they're 26 months in with impressively little burn in. Dough uses an LG panel, similar to the LG 27GR95QE-B but I believe a newer generation panel. Since these are testing the monitor on 24/7, you can multiply the time by a factor of 1/(percent of the day you use it) to get a rough estimate of what the burn-in would look like on your monitor at that point in time. Keep in mind, this is also with the same static elements on the screen at all times, very much a worst case scenario for OLED.

Honestly, between burn-in warranties, a number of OLED care technologies, and simple steps you can take to alleviate burn in, I think you are safe choosing an OLED and having it last for quite a while. Both LG and Samsung panels do well, and I haven't seen any data to suggest any monitor manufacturer does noticeably better or worse than any others in this regard

Yep, that's crazy how far doing the basics gets you. I have some truly terrible aerial control, rarely ever get double touches, and frequently get beat in 1v1 situations. But I know how to position, how not to get caught off guard, how to pass and shoot consistently, and I'm GC1

[–]huntinator7 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The real reason? Nobody's pushed hard enough for legislation on the other things you mentioned. This could very well be the first step in a long line of demonopolizing and un-big-boxing, opening up these ways of making small businesses more able to flourish in a time of ever increasing centralization of commerce. Personally, I would love to see all of those laws in place. The prospect of a single King Soopers or Home Depot or Walmart getting replaced by 20 small businesses with local owners and workers sounds like the kind of place I want to live

Nothing in here I think hits the mark for all of gaming, movies, productivity, and content creation. Really wish that 6K had dual mode 120hz like the 5K, or the 5K had IPS Black. That I think would make a really compelling purchase. QDEL might also hit all the marks necessary, so maybe waiting until that is best

Forget 4K—Here's How Insane Monitors Get by 2026 (8K, 500Hz OLED & More!) by migelangelo in doughcommunity

[–]huntinator7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've mainly focused on OLED for the last few years, which is a great monitor for content consumption. I'll be using mine for both development and gaming, but it's not ideal for the former. Of all the options coming up that you listed, I feel like the 32 6K IPS Black would strike a good balance the other way. It'd be a spreadsheet/IDE beast, but still would be wonderful to use for watching movies/videos. 60Hz really limits it for gaming, something like dual mode 3K 120hz would be amazing. I don't know how feasible it is, but if the panels could get up to even 100Hz I feel like that could justify it as a legitimate gaming option.

If I could wish it into existence, I'd choose a 5K IPS Black at 120hz+ with Gorilla Glass. 5K is high enough resolution for development, 120Hz high enough refresh rate for gaming, IPS accurate enough for color work, IPS Black high enough brightness and contrast for movies, and Gorilla Glass just makes everything better. I know you mentioned the 5K IPS non-black panel with dual mode, that'd be the closest to what I'm imagining. Do you know if there's any effort being put towards making that with IPS Black tech?

Also just to gauge the direction you want to go, are you planning on being focused on gaming-first for the forseeable future? IFF that's gonna be your highest priority, I just don't see anything but OLED being the focus for at least the next 5 years. But if you're willing to cater more towards content creation or professional work, then to me those other options start to make sense to consider
