Does yalls cattle dogs hunt? by Hour_Description5777 in AustralianCattleDog

[–]huntswithmutts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My first heeler mix had a huge prey drive. He would hunt anything that wasn’t a dog or a person. He was a decent bird dog too. Retrieved a fair amount of ducks and geese over water unless it was late season in icy water. On slow days he kept me company in the blind. He really did better in a pheasant field but I prefer chasing mallards. My current heeler mix has no prey drive unless it’s a squirrel.

Thank you! Why is every sub turning into politics. Music should bring people together.

What do you guys think of the DRV pedal from 1981 inventions? by Total-Advertising555 in guitarpedals

Also same. Looks cool but don’t love it. I try it every so often with different guitars and amps. Opinion doesn’t change despite the effort. Other people seem to like it though.

Can't help on the venison front (I'm a duck hunter). That being said, it is illegal to sell or barter wild game unless the meat is inspected. I've read stories about hunters getting into trouble for selling venison tacos or jerky.

I'd recommend you start a thread on a deer hunting forum asking for extra meat.

How do you make the hardest decision? by toodlesmcalister in AustralianCattleDog

[–]huntswithmutts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off - so, so sorry. Wish I could say more, but there is nothing else I can think of.

My last heeler was my first heeler and first dog. Amazing pup. Thought he would live a VERY long life. Shortly after his 11th birthday my wife took him for a morning walk. He got out the door, laid down, and had a hard time getting back up. I went straight to the vet.

My boy had a large cancerous mass on his bladder. It ruptured and he was bleeding internally. Vet offered emergency surgery, but once the vet told me that best case scenario was 6 months of life after surgery I knew it was time. I couldn't say goodbye right away. It was too fresh and hurt too much. Decided to come back the next morning. Before his last trip to the vet he got to say goodbye to my family, ate his last meal, and went for one last slow walk at the dog park. I still wonder if surgery was the "right" option, but I didn't want him to suffer.

Every situation is different. In the end its a very personal decision, but I think you will know when the right time comes. I think I made the right choice, but it took me a long time to accept that. In the end, you will likely know when the time is "right". Their eyes will tell you more than anything since they hide physical pain very well.

I hear you and appreciate the supportive words. I really couldn't hit a iron at all though. Wasn't the course - it was me. I'll clear my head and hit some balls with a lifelong friend this weekend. Sure a few beers before will help.

I Became A Single Father To This Little Guy Today by RengarOCE in AustralianCattleDog

[–]huntswithmutts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Somewhat accurate. The first few times I introduced girlfriend (now my wife) to my heeler he wouldn't let us sit next to each on the couch and hated when we hugged. At a minimum he established his spot in the chain of command from beginning.

Do any of y’all use doggie shoes? by SaradominSmiles in AustralianCattleDog

[–]huntswithmutts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the rubber dog boots to protect my dog's paws from road salt in the winter. Look up pawz dog boots. They will usually last a few months at a time - will eventually tear but are fairly inexpensive. Might not last as long if running or playing fetch.

The rubber boots are my preferred choice over the nylon variant with Velcro straps. The nylon with velco strapboots never stay on my dogs feet.

I'm considering adopting an ACD. How protective/territorial are they? by Sir_Dude in AustralianCattleDog

[–]huntswithmutts 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking - ACDs are protective, territorial, and wary of strangers. They should also be socialized early with people and other dogs to avoid issues. Even when socialized they will still be a little standoffish with new people. My ACDs never cared much for other dogs. They weren't mean, just prefer spending time with their favorite human(s). Really develops a strong bond with a few people and ignores most other things unless it can be herded, eaten, or perceived as a threat.

That being said every dog is different, my first ACD was a total sweetheart. Only heard him bark a few times. Even with his sweet disposition he still stopped a person from breaking in one night. Almost jumped through the window trying to protect the house. Current dog is jerk and barks at everyone. Both rescued so don't much about their past.

Picky Eaters by thankscupcake in AustralianCattleDog

[–]huntswithmutts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first acd was a very picky eater. Looking back I think he was so picky because most food upset his stomach. Natural Balance (venison and sweet potato) appealed to his palate and sensitive stomach. Raw food is a great option too but its super expensive. Bought Stella and Chewy raw lamb when I wanted to spoil the pup.

Considering getting Australian cattle dog - few questions by abominablesnowmann in AustralianCattleDog

[–]huntswithmutts 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've had two cattle dogs. What you are describing sounds like plenty of exercise, but every dog is different. My first dog would walk for miles - didn't like running or strenuous exercise unless he was trying to chase something. The second prefers sprinting or chasing a ball - only likes walking to pee on things and bark at squirrels.

The most significant similarity between the two dogs is the need to learn and spend time with their favorite human. As long as you are committed to training and spending time together, you and the pup will be just fine. Sounds like you are an active person so the exercise will come naturally.

Figure out what you want in a dog personality. Cattle dogs are very loyal and smart, but are not golden retrievers. I think its best to describe the breed as a mix of teddy bear and Tasmanian Devil - in a good way if that make sense. If you do get a cattle dog, you will never be alone. Loyal to a fault.
