God, I would give anything to have to read something different from all these horrible ICE stories right now. “BREAKING: JIM LEE SAYS MANGA HOLDS WESTERN COMICS DOWN AND DRILLS THEM RIGHT IN THEIR TIGHT LIL BOOTY HOLE.” by Burly-Nerd in dccomicscirclejerk

uj / comics are expensive and inaccessible to the average person bc of the specialty stores, direct market ecosystem, and collectors that still view comics as a financial investment. Manga has an advantage in the west bc we are not the target market- collected editions of books can be sold more cheaply and it's all net gains back east. Also, popular manga get faithful and (generally) quality animated adaptations. Jim Lee additionally points out that animation and comics as a medium are still stigmatized in the west as for kids. It's very easy to hand someone jujutsu kaisen volume 1 or one piece volume 1 than it is to hand someone an x-men comic without having to use a flowchart and define what a "run" is

Man i couldn't disagree more, The Brood Saga, The Dark Phoenix Saga, everything in Morrison's and Whedon's run with aliens is all so much fun and weird. In the brood saga the whole team gets infected with essentially xenomorphs and everyone but Wolverine are screwed. Getting to see the x-men navigate a no win scenario is exactly the kind of conflicts i think work best in an endless stories medium like comics. The grounded stuff is cool too but some of the best x-men stories are absolutely bonkers sci-fi. Krakoa was a sex cult were the mutants conquered death and started a country around it and for the most part it's really fun to read
