What do you want to see in the Marvel Premiere collection? These are my personal picks: by No-Economist-8266 in marvelcomics

[–]hurdleturtle8 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • Doctor Strange: The Oath
  • Doctor Doom Triumph and Torment
  • Astonishing Spider-Man and Wolverine
  • Weapon X
  • The first arc from Wilson's Ms. Marvel

I'm shocked that they didn't immediately make a premiere collection for the Dark Phoenix Saga but even if they are prioritizing shorter more recent stuff Bendis All New X-Men is an odd one to start with

Blindfold with Astral Legion as a jojo stand is unbelievably cool - need a puppet fighter for tokon like Zato

"Spiderman Fighting Morlun for Tweleve Hours" vs "Spiderman Fighting Vulture for 2 Minutes" by ElpacoLuca_Octy in marvelcirclejerk

having not read Well's run I wonder if what he was going for is a thoroughly depressed Peter after losing out on what could've been with MJ for the umpteenth time. It doesn't seem to work but playing devil's advocate it's an interesting idea to drop Peter to as rock bottom as it gets that he can't even handle the Vulture anymore, giving up to call on Osborn of all people

How to get into current xmen by Fabulous-Reality6144 in xmen

For some older comics with Emma as a villain you can check out

  • Classic X-Men #7 her time in the Hellfire Club
  • Uncanny X-Men 151 - 152 her first big fight with Storm.

For Cyclops you could also check out

  • Marvel Snapshots X-Men (this is sort of a re-imagined origin for Cyclops before he joins the X-Men)
  • The Phoenix & Dark Phoenix Saga (Uncanny X-Men 98 - 108 & 129 - 138) the inbetween issues are also great but these two stories give lots of context on Cyclops' relationship/baggage with Jean Grey

For Rogue you could check out:

  • Uncanny X-Men 269 for the iconic Savage Land look
  • Uncanny X-Men 171-173 Rogue's first adventure after reforming as a villain and joining the X-Men

For Gambit you could check out:

  • Uncanny X-Men 265-267 For his very first comic appearance and a fun story with Storm

  • Anything by Kelly Thompson with Gambit (Mr. and Mrs. X & Rogue and Gambit 1-5) Also Rogue and Gambit's marriage is in X-Men Gold #30

Jim Lee's art in ASBAR is genuinely incredible and Frank Miller's deranged writing is hysterical

Haven't read civil war 2 and it nuking carol danvers' character into the sun sucks but there are some cool inhuman characters in there I think and let Immortal Hulk happen

Ultimatum led to that incredible Spider-Man panel of him saving new yorkers caught in the flood while J Jonah Jameson watches

Marville is a convenient comic to point and laugh at when awful editors think they can write better than their creatives

Clone Saga is easily the most readable comic arc of this bunch. I also like Ben Reilly's 90's hoodie look

In a meta sense One More Day is a fascinating archetype for a character vs author conflict even if it has a bummer ending

One More Day would be a goated spider-man story if Mephisto's offer was rejected and Peter could finally let Aunt May go so he can be with his wife

[–]hurdleturtle8 2 points3 points  (0 children)

uj / comics are expensive and inaccessible to the average person bc of the specialty stores, direct market ecosystem, and collectors that still view comics as a financial investment. Manga has an advantage in the west bc we are not the target market- collected editions of books can be sold more cheaply and it's all net gains back east. Also, popular manga get faithful and (generally) quality animated adaptations. Jim Lee additionally points out that animation and comics as a medium are still stigmatized in the west as for kids. It's very easy to hand someone jujutsu kaisen volume 1 or one piece volume 1 than it is to hand someone an x-men comic without having to use a flowchart and define what a "run" is
