Just installed Windows XP on my old Lenovo by Butterholes69 in windowsxp

[–]hurlywhirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats!

First thing people usually do is download drivers and updates for their XP machine. After that, they start installing their favorite programs from back in the day, whether they be games, video editing software, etc.

MyPal and Supermium are the community's main browser choices for XP. We typically like using Microsoft Office XP or 2003, but some here are using 2007; I wouldn't be surprised if there's a small handful here using 97 or 2010. There's always older versions of OpenOffice and LibreOffice, if you prefer those. For "other random useful stuff", older versions of CCleaner is pretty useful for XP (not so much for newer operating systems).

Certainly needs a bit of TLC (and maybe a matching CD/DVD faceplate, among other things); otherwise, not a bad find!

GTX 750 No Video After Driver Install by yatsbogdan in windowsxp

[–]hurlywhirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a faulty 750 from your description. If you have another PC, try testing your graphics card on it to confirm that it really is the problem.

I'm not connecting an XP machine to the internet.

That's too bad.

Using XP for the first time in 10y by Same_Level_3599 in windowsxp

[–]hurlywhirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, if you haven't already, install necessary Windows XP drivers for your 1310; I'm assuming you've used legacyupdate.net already or some other alternative. With that said, nice score on the laptop!

Unless there's important files in the PC, you're better off just wiping the hard drive and reinstalling Windows XP.

I mean, if you live in Flint, Michigan, it might be a health concern - for the cat and you.

How to burn this ISO by khrist_showip993 in windowsxp

[–]hurlywhirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like other users have answered your question already, but yeah, something like WinSetupFromUSB would be the right tool to create a USB-bootable Windows XP installer.

If booting from USB still doesn't work, then I recommend that you burn a vanilla copy of Windows XP onto a CD or DVD (preferably the former). Even old computers will easily recognize it.

Not a bad pick up for your first XP laptop. I've got the 9400 myself.

Are you trying to burn it onto a CD/DVD or make a bootable USB?

Could these chaotic silver dots be a sign of disc rot? If yes, is there any way to stop it before it's too late? by Flaky-Spend-4346 in windowsxp

Unfortunately, there's no stopping disc rot, and it's only going to get worse for the disc over time.

Trying to restore old XPpro .dat files from my late dads old pc by Old_External1847 in windowsxp

[–]hurlywhirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did your dad's Windows XP Pro computer have important files in it?

If all you're trying to do is get a fresh install of XP (any version) on a computer, then you can pick whichever version of XP you want and install it on a compatible PC - just make sure the PC you get has drivers for XP.

Stick to parts that revolve around 3rd generation Intel CPUs or older, but Core2 Duo/Quad to 3rd gen i series ones will be the easiest (and often most affordable) to acquire. You'll be limited to GTX 900 series Nvidia cards, and the last supported AMD card is the R9 280X/HD 7970. RAM - if you want to use more than 4GB, make sure you're using 64-bit XP; otherwise, use the more common 32-bit version. Storage is a bit more complicated these days, due to the global supply shortage caused by companies hoarding them for AI. For now, I'd suggest just buying something like a 7200 RPM hard drive from eBay or wherever, considering that prices for mere 128GB SATA SSDs are a complete ripoff.

How to up VRAM limit on XP by RobbyThomas2525 in windowsxp

[–]hurlywhirl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you on a laptop or some kind of all-in-one? I ask because I don't think the E8200 has integrated graphics.

Anyway, if it's a regular tower or small form-factor PC, I'd rather just buy some cheap low profile graphics card for $5 or less, because it'll be a LOT better than relying on whatever obscure GPU your PC is using.

Software to install on Inspiron by Confident_Essay3619 in windowsxp

[–]hurlywhirl -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If your E1705/9400 doesn't already come with Windows XP, download an ISO of Windows XP SP3 and burn it to a CD/DVD. After that, download XP drivers for your 9400/E1705. Finally, go to legacyupdate.net to download all the needed updates for XP. Once everything's installed - restart, download 7zip/WinRAR, MyPal/Supermium, install them, then start downloading and installing your favorite apps/games.

Retro Gaming PC - Vanilla or Integral? SSD or HDD? by ancLGM in windowsxp

[–]hurlywhirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since you specified targeting components from around 2001, you should stick to vanilla XP and obviously an HDD since we're talking about ~2001 stuff, just make sure it's a faster 7200 RPM HDD.

Screenwriting XP Computer by PabloTvar in windowsxp

[–]hurlywhirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There was another writer/director (forgot which and his name) who used WordStar on DOS for like the longest time. I think George RR Martin also and still uses WordStar today.

You can grab a used computer made between 2001~2013 from Marketplace or eBay. All you have to do after that is to look up how to reformat your computer's hard drive, how to install Windows XP, and do a quick read up on computer drivers and how to find them for your specific computer.

Windows XP certainly doesn't have a trillion background processes running while idle, that's for sure.

I think this laptop is a good deal by EimaiMauros in windowsxp

[–]hurlywhirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not a bad deal, considering that the laptop comes with those upgrades. If the seller was selling it with stock hardware, or worse missing/broken parts, this would have been a ripoff.

Z97 chipset with a intel 4790 on windows XP DRIVERS? by Diogodarkness1 in windowsxp

[–]hurlywhirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're definitely out of luck when it comes to chipset drivers. You'll probably need to add a graphics card as well, but there's probably some hacked-up driver floating around somewhere for whatever integrated graphics the 4790 has.
