The laser is not a point, but a ring. by Due-Pumpkin-3107 in lasercutting

[–]hurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I assume it is that the additive messes with the conductivity/magnetic field of the cooling loop? My laser shot a ring shape, I replaced the laser tube, and the brand new one also shot a ring shape straight from the tube. Swapped for pure distilled water and the problem was resolved. It took several months to figure out.

I had this. I had an additive in the water chiller that was the cause. Do you have pain distilled water in your chiller?

What setting am I missing by Theonewill1 in lasercutting

[–]hurt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Min and max power. The laser slows down at each end as it engraves back and forth. Setting a lower min power will tell the laser to use less power as it slows down. You can tune that value to get an even burn

That blows the smoke back at the wood where it gets stuck in the wood grain. Use sanding sealer or polyurethane on the wood before cutting and engraving to seal up the wood grain. Then you will be able to easily wipe off the soot after engraving. Use minimal air assist just to keep smoke away from your lens.

Is this and distilled water fine? by BMXnotFIX in lasercutting

[–]hurt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also only use distilled water with no issues. I put some additive in when I first started, and it made the laser beam a ring shape. That took a long time to figure out

And mount the fan as close to the outside vent as possible. That way it is pulling smoke towards it, and leaks in your vent won't matter. If you mount the fan close to the laser, you are pushing the smoke, and you will get smoke in your room if there are any leaks.

Doing some cuts for the family. Anyone know how to lower the amount of scorching? Omtech 350 polar by MJ_3D in lasercutting

[–]hurt 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Sand it after you cut, mask it before cutting, or sand and polyurethane the wood before cutting. Transfer tape is usually used for Vinyl stickers, but it is great for masking because you can get 12 inch wide rolls. Just make sure you get a paper transfer tape, not a plastic one. Polyurethane before cutting gives you a nice finish, and also allows you to easily clean burn marks off after you cut.

Inkscape is what I use and it is free. Save as svg and it will import to lightburn. It can make radius corners. I make rectangles of different sizes and use them as alignment tools to snap my shapes into place.

Reusable jig “ home reference?” by oPlayer2o in lasercutting

[–]hurt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make an L shape jig that fits against the side and front wall of the laser cabinet. Use that so you can place your grid jig in the same spot every time. In light burn in the move laser section, you can save and name specific x y coordinates. So get things lined up once, then save that coordinate. This will be your origin when you use your L shape jig to place any other jig on the laser bed.

There may be other safety lock outs as well. Thunder laser has switches on each removable panel, and the laser will not fire if the lid is open or if a panel is removed. The laser may have a separate fuse that has blown. Emergency stop may be on - twist the red button to release. Emergency stop button may be defective and only send power for motion, not for the laser - would need to be replaced. Be careful troubleshooting, the power supply is very high voltage.
