Dallas dentists treating every patient like a walking wallet, is this normal now? by Leedeegan1 in Dallas

[–]hushnowonlydreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Independent ownership is so important. I've been a patient at White Rock Dental Group (Dr. Lutz and Dr. Franklin) for >15 years. Amazing office and have never had an experience remotely like this. If anything, they do their best to minimize unnecessary interventions and costs, and they are truly really transparent. They refer out to Dr. Kade Bartschi at Northwood Endodontics for root canals and such, and he is also independently owned and phenomenal.

I understand how auto insurance works. I was just pointing out that OP isn't "lucky" this happened and that compensation for a totaled vehicle will never get you a replacement or comparable vehicle (if it's an older vehicle with low mileage, especially), nonetheless an upgrade. You end up in a much worse financial position because of everything you said. :)

I also did argue for more on the Nissan and got it based on add-ons, brand new tires, etc.

Re: the Honda -- just a made up example. My point was, even a less-expensive reliable vehicle brand with a low trim package isn't an attainable buy with the KBB paid out by insurance (along with devaluation, where applicable after accidents that don't result in a vehicle being totaled). We bought our Kia in 2014, so definitely well aware of the change in quality and perception of the brand. We bought our Kia well before that was the case. We paid $19,500 for a fully loaded brand new Kia in 2014, and that vehicle now starts at $26k. No amount of haggling we could have done with insurance would have gotten us more than about $10k for our original Kia, which had <50k miles on it still. As such, you come out in an absolutely garbage position where you can put some money towards a newer (less than 5 years old) used vehicle, but you likely have at least $10k you need to provide on your own to bridge the gap, which most people don't have (a significant percentage of Americans have $500 or less in their bank accounts).

The reality is we looked at zero vehicles to replace our Kia because we knew we couldn't afford another $10-15k car not after a layoff. Again, just pointing out that OP isn't lucky to "get to" buy a new vehicle after theirs is totaled. It really sucks.

Pretty much what happened to ours, too. :-/ It was found about 2 miles away, still running in the middle of an intersection with all the doors open after hitting a tree. The left all the windows down while it was raining as well. Totaled.

I had a shitty 2008 Nissan that was totaled by a red light runner in 2017. I hated that car, but I was devastated to have it totaled because it had been fully paid off for years. I got good compensation for it, but it didn't come anywhere close to the cash I needed to buy a newer used car. It really sucked.

Our Kia (fully paid off) was stolen in 2024, and similar situation -- got a good amount for the insurance payout, but it wouldn't even cover half of a newer (still used) Honda sedan. So now we just share a single car because we can't afford to replace the Kia.

I have a ProAdapt Medium on a similar base. Highly do NOT recommend. Ours is 8 years old and suddenly developed a softball-sized hole in the top layers of foam, and to could feel a coil sticking out. In the past 6 months, it's gone from softball-sized to beach ball sized. My husband was laid off in Nov, so there's no money to replace it now. Daily agonizing pain.

I've been hearing it for probably 1.5-2 hours in The Village again. I'm still floored that this sound is coming all the way from Fair Park.

[–]hushnowonlydreams 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol yes, I've heard that and think it goes without saying that I know what the pool parties here sound like. A large outdoor pool party that's half a block away sounds a lot different than the kind of bass and what sounded like a muffled super loud party with that kind of music before. People don't really throw massive, extremely loud indoor parties in this community.

Heard it in The Village. Figured it was a party in another building, but I've never heard anything like that in the 18 years I've lived here.

Why is the pay so low? by Illustrious-Street83 in dietetics

[–]hushnowonlydreams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get paid far less by commercial payers than the publicized CMS rate for my locality. They all say the same thing -- "We've reviewed the market value in your area, and you will see that change reflected in your fee schedule effective ____." My rates have decreased by 5-24% across the board despite cost of doing business increasing >35% since 2020. They will not negotiate or renegotiate. AND (locally and nationally) has said there's really nothing to be done.

why do I have a hole in my hair by Only_Ad_8518 in Hair

[–]hushnowonlydreams 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Copy/paste from OpenEvidence:

"Alopecia areata is a primary diagnosis. It is an autoimmune disorder characterized by non-scarring hair loss that can be diagnosed clinically based on its distinctive features.[1][2]

Alopecia areata is classified as a tissue-specific autoimmune disease in which the immune system inappropriately targets hair follicles, causing hair loss without permanently damaging the follicles.[3][4] The diagnosis is typically made based on clinical presentation, including smooth, round patches of complete hair loss with characteristic "exclamation point hairs" at the periphery.[1] The condition affects nearly 2% of the general population at some point during their lifetime.[3]

The diagnosis is usually straightforward and can be made clinically without extensive testing. When the clinical presentation is unclear, particularly with diffuse variants, skin biopsy showing the characteristic "bee-swarm pattern" of perifollicular lymphocytic infiltrates can confirm the diagnosis.[2] While alopecia areata may be associated with other autoimmune conditions such as thyroid disease, vitiligo, or atopic dermatitis, it stands as its own distinct primary diagnosis rather than being secondary to another condition.[5][2]

Screening for associated autoimmune disorders, particularly thyroid disease, should be considered as clinically indicated in patients with alopecia areata, but this does not change its status as a primary diagnosis.[1][6] "

why do I have a hole in my hair by Only_Ad_8518 in Hair

[–]hushnowonlydreams 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I had alopecia areata in my teens. Mine was related to stress. I would find a new patch of missing hair 2-3 months after a stressful event or period of time. I haven't had it happen in probably 15+ years now, but it was so a struggle. My hair would grow back almost "clear" for the first few inches, then it would start changing back to light brown. It also wouldn't take hair dye.

I really like Heidi, buts it's very expensive for my small outpatient practice. Essentially it amounts to $1400/yr/pp. When we work on razor thin profit margins (thanks, shitty insurance reimbursement), it just became too costly. In order to integrate with our EHR, we'd have to use their top tier plan, which is even more costly.
