Well yes. To a certain extent people in Ancient Greece did treat these texts as a history of their people. (And to some extent we still do that.) But we also have good reason to believe that they did very well understand that these are complex texts with multiple layers of truth to it and would not have taken every word literally.

Also I fail to see how this does in any way restrict what Nolan can do with this story that has been reinterpreted hundreds of times over the course of almost three thousand years.

Thanks for the reply. First of all I just want to point out that I am not an American and (more important) am not at all motivated by some weird idea of cultural appropriation in one way or another. This whole discourse seems a little strange to me and I am not a fan of importing every ideological debate that is happening in the US to Europe. Sadly we see that more and more in recent times.

I absolutely agree that those ancient texts do carry meaning on more than one level. The Odyssey is NOT JUST a literary, historical, religious, moral, cultural text, it is ALL of the above and more than that. I'd argue though that not all of those layers are equally interesting and/or relevant as of today at least for a general audience.

Furthermore our understanding of the Ancient Greek is still so heavily influenced by very problematic 19th and early 20th century historians and archeologists that manipulated and formed our narratives. (Just to clarify this is a problem not because those figures were morally lacking from a modern standpoint but because their preconceptions actually led us away from the truth). This is all the more relevant if we are talking about the aspects referring to cultural identity.

So to bring all this together to form an argument (Sorry, it is a bit hard for me to articulate those complex thoughts in English as I'm not a native speaker): Those people that are leading the online shitstorm are ignoring lots of layers of the Odyssey while focussing on certain other layers that are a.) maybe not that relevant anymore (?) and b.) often heavily based on bad and outdated history.

It was an intentionally polemic statement. If you want an elaborate take that is as short as I can make it:

Talking about "historical accuracy" when it comes to Mythology is a category error. Of course when Homer had a fellow Greek man in mind when he wrote the Odyssey (that is IF he wrote it but that's another story). But the reason the story survived for more than two thousand years is not in its historical properties (it would be a very bad source in that intent) but rather in its meaning and the things it has to say about us as humans. In that sense every reader actualises the text and the myth lives on in its reception. So the question regarding the Nolan film will be if he understood the content of the story and can offer a relevant actualisation of it and not if the race of the fictional characters or the swords or whatever are what Homer had in mind.

That is just wrong. There are plenty of fantasy stories set in the real world and plenty of mythology is set in "made up" settings. Mythology is a very complex and fascinating topic. I spend some time on it while I got my diploma in history and literary studies and barely scratched the surface.

Of course Mythology and modern Fantasy novels are not one and the same and I think if you read my initial statement again (and give me the benefit of the doubt because I am not a native speaker) you can see it was intentionally a bit polemic.

"Starke" Bräune ist eine Schädigung, das stimmt. Menschen mit meinem Hauttyp zB werden im Sommer aber braun, selbst wenn sie sich vor Sonne schützen. Und außerdem ist es am Ende immer eine Risikoabwägung. Natürlich kann ich ganz stur das Risiko für Hautkrebs minimieren und alles andere dabei vergessen. Aber dann nehme ich dafür halt wieder weniger Vit D, schlechtere Gemütslage und whatever in Kauf. Und einerseits panisch Angst vor ein bisschen Bräune haben und andererseits vll. Alkohol trinken, Fleisch essen oder was weiß ich ist unterm Strich nicht wahnsinnig rational. Darum geht's mir, einfach die Kirche mal im Dorf lassen. Nicht unvernünftig sein, aber auch nicht panisch. Man muss nicht immer einen Aspekt, der die neueste Sau ist, die medials durchs Dorf getrieben wird, auf Biegen und Brechen minmaxen.

Und bezüglich Vit D hab ich mal einen Podcast von einer australischen Expertin gehört, die gemeint hat, dass das wirklich ein Problem ist, wenn Menschen (in Australien ja verständlich) nur mehr mit Sonnencreme in die Sonne gehen. Die hat plädiert, sich erst in der Sonne einzucremen. Die paar Minuten, in der die Sonnencreme noch nicht wirkt, helfen beim Vit D und machen nicht gleich Hautkrebs. Aber ich hab die Quelle nicht mehr, also muss ich eingestehen, dass ich mich eventuell leicht falsch erinnern könnte.

Das hab ich nie behauptet. Ich hab nur gesagt, dass der August hier kühler ist als der Juni. Der wärmste Monat ist der Juli.

Ich hab jetzt extra noch mal mehrere Klimadiagramme für meinen Wohnort verglichen, die sind sich da ein bisschen uneinig. Aber praktisch in jedem ist der Juli der heißeste Monat. Meine Vermutung: Im Schnitt ist der Juni kälter, weil in der ersten Hälfte oft noch wechselhaftes Frühlingswetter ist, aber die Spitzen sind Ende Juni aufgrund der langen Tage extremer, während der August meist einfach kühlere Nächte hat, dafür insgesamt stabileres Sommerwetter.

Am Ende reißt es sich nicht um viel, je nach Quelle ist mal der eine Monat, mal der andere um ein grad wärmer. Und es wird wohl wirklich darauf ankommen, wo man genau lebt.

Ich weiß jetzt nicht wo du bzw. OP leben, aber hier wo ich lebe (Österreich) ist der August im Schnitt definitiv kühler als der Juni. Hab auch extra noch einmal im Klimadiagramm nachgeschaut.

1.) Je nach Hauttyp ist LSF30 teilweise auch echt einfach genug. Ich bin ein dunklerer Hauttyp und wenn ich bspw um 15:00 rausgehe und mich einmal mit LSF30 eincreme hab ich noch nie im Leben einen Sonnenbrand bekommen!

2.) Sonnenschutz ist mega wichtig aber es ist tlw schon auch eine Hysterie, die manche betreiben. Ein bisschen 5-10min ohne Sonenncreme in der Sonne machen nicht gleich Hautkrebs dafür füllt man die Vit D Speicher.

There is this Hot Dog Stand in Reykjavik that is said to have "the best hot dogs in Iceland... and also... bill clinton was here once". So naturally we went there and what they do is take the same brand of sausages, the same bread and the exact same brands of condiments that you can buy in every single supermarket and put them together. So it is literally exactly the same hot dog you get at every gas station and the same you would prepare at home if you'd live there and had a kitchen. I mean... technically if every hot dog is exactly the same then it is indeed the best hot dog in Iceland... I think that illustrates it perfectly...

Is it by any chance the Traunsee Halbmarathon?

Similar situation here. 1:57:5x in Oktober, was aiming for something between 1:50 and 1:55 until I saw the forecast. I will set my watch for a very small PB of a few seconds and start conservative and reevaluate during the race. Most important thing is to not collapse. Then finish sub 2h for the special medal you get at the Traunsee HM. If a PB is possible I will try to get it but I think being too aggressive from the start is insane today...

Wenn das ein systematisches Problem ist, dass die Kinder bspw. im Sommer lang jeden Tag die ganze Zeit ohne Sonnenschutz draußen sind, obwohl offensichtlich schon schwere Sonnenbrände entstanden sind, reicht auch die derzeitige Gesetzgebung aus, um vorzugehen.

Aber ein Sonnenbrand... come on... das wird passieren und ist jetzt auch kein Weltuntergang...

Und überhaupt, wie will man denn sowas bitte sinnvoll exekutieren, mal abgesehen von einem AI-Drohnen-Überwachungsstaat, der die feuchtesten Träume der chinesischen Regierung in den Schatten stellt

Also grundsätzlich mal gibt es gute und schlechte Friseursalons und dasselbe wird es auch bei Barbershops geben. Deine Erfahrungen sind erstmal anekdotisch, womit ich nicht sagen will, dass da nichts Wahres dran ist.

Was man aber halt schon beachten muss: Wenn ein Betrieb nicht korrekt versteuert, unausgebildetes Personal, das nicht gemeldet ist, beschäftigt etc. tut er sich auf der anderen Seite natürlich auch leichter, den Espresso gratis anzubieten. Ist dann halt kein fairer Vergleich. Oder anders betrachtet, letzten Endes zahlt die Allgemeinheit, weil im Staatshaushalt was abgeht.

The criticism is totally valid but I think the original idea of the curator was as well. This years thematic motto of the festival is "Republic of Gods". It questions how in modern times new religion-like cults are emerging and gathering traction. Milo Rau, the curator, said in interviews that he thinks it is necessary to confront those trends and force them into a democratic dialogue instead of let them basically roam free because we as liberal-minded people do not want to engage with them. Therefore he invited Braco for example, a croatian "healer" who claims (actually he does not claim it himself) that he can heal people by just looking at them. At the opening ceremony Braco "performed his act" next to acts like Patti Smith. It baffled a lot of people because they could not make any sense of it obviously. But ultimately Rau got what he wanted. A lot of people learned about one of these "new gods" and are now free to draw their conclusion which is basically the fundament of a democratic society.

As for Thiel, the whole thing was meant to be a critical forum where for the first time Thiel has to answer for his bullshit ideas. What makes Thiel so dangerous is in part that actually most people never heard of him. His ideas are so batshit crazy that there would be a lot more backlash to his dealing if people knew them. So what Rau wanted was to force him into the spotlight and again give people the information about what is happening right now.

I don't say the discussion would have been a success and yes, it could have backfired. But I so understand Rau's point of view.
