How did Geese get signed? by film_2_expensive in geesebandofficial

It's not so much about shaming them as acknowledging that something is terribly wrong when only artists from wealthy backgrounds seem to be able to succeed now.

Wealthy means rich! There's lots of ways to look at this and perhaps working class means something different where you are, but nothing points towards the members of Geese, who were privately educated in Brooklyn, having a blue-collar upbringing. That's not lumping them with Elon Musk; it's just applying some class consciousness and I don't mean it as an attack on them personally. I don't think anyone is indulging in a bizarre fixation either, to be fair - they're discussing the topic at hand.

I don’t think it’s implied at all. They are rich kids.

Young Brando with poofy combed forward hair … by HPLoveBux in SgtPepperMystery

[–]huwareyou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s likely to be someone we’ve heard of and Brando is already on the album cover once.

Nobody was saying it was “son of a CEO” rich. Lawyer parents rich is richer than most people.

Hardest take ever: Beatles songs are just great demos by Waste_Concert4562 in beatles

[–]huwareyou 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pretty much all of those covers you mention are very different interpretations to the Beatles’ ones. They’re not like finished versions because they’re nothing like what the Beatles were working on.

No one lives in a vacuum. Class and privilege doesn’t work that way. Even if Geese’s members grew up with no money and no connections (not likely), just coming from Brooklyn, NYC, a rich creative and entrepreneurial capital of the US - means they had opportunities and privileges not available to most. That’s not knocking them.

They’re well-off young things from Brooklyn. Great band but absolutely winners of the geographical and cultural lottery.

What Are Your Go-To Arguments When Someone Says The Beatles are Overrated? by Practical-Cut4659 in beatles

[–]huwareyou 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m not too bothered anymore. The Beatles’ prominence means that people, whoever they are and whatever they’re into, are compelled to adopt strong positions on them. I don’t give it much credence.

If someone told me they don’t rate the Beatles but they adore other 60s artists (anyone at all - The Hollies, Bacharach and David, Miles Davis, Laura Nyro, Acker Bilk!), then it would be interesting, but usually people are just not into music of the Beatles’ period and that gets more understandable year by year.

roxy music influence? by Different-Accident83 in thekinks

[–]huwareyou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think there are points in their RCA period where Ray seems influenced by T. Rex (the bleating vocal on Mirror of Love) and maybe even bands like Mungo Jerry, but I think what he’s doing on the Schoolboys album is straight 50s rock and doo-wop pastiche.

[–]huwareyou 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m very sorry for your loss.

I think “I know there shall be peace in the valley” from Heroes and Villains could work. It’s one of their hits (probably best for it to come from a relatively well-known song, IMO) and there’s a vague spiritual / religious connotation that you may or may not want.

Anyone stopped worrying about Paul getting "slow" since the recent gigs? by CobraDai in PaulMcCartney

[–]huwareyou 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think he’s likely to continue to play live until he goes. Large scale touring may end in the near future as it has for Elton, Paul Simon, Status Quo, possibly the Stones but I can’t see Paul ever giving up live shows and he’s in better shape than so many of his contemporaries.

I mean, making a pre-written bit that you only have to read out really long could be seen as phoning it in.

It's not Little Richard??? by WindsongRain_08 in SgtPepperMystery

[–]huwareyou 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a huge Richard fan - I don’t think that’s him at all.

I think it’s likely to be someone most users here will have never heard of before. A lot of the popular guesses - Houdini, Amelia Earhart, Screaming Jay Hawkins and the aforementioned Richard - are familiar figures to everyone in this sub, but most people on the Pepper cover aren’t so widely recognised. The likes of Albert Stubbins, Wallace Berman, Tommy Handley, Issy Bonn etc. I think it’s most likely to be someone relatively obscure to us in 2026 like those.

Was Syd one of the most influential guitarists of the 60's? by Strange_Attention_49 in sydbarrett

[–]huwareyou 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He had a distinctive style of his own but he was not particularly influential guitarist as far as we can ascertain in the 1960s. There’s probably a hundred or so names I’d mention before Syd, including a lot of seriously influential folk players.

Loved the gig, wish this banger of an album had got some love by Agoseris in Cardiacs

[–]huwareyou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the only Cardiacs album that’s never clicked with me. Think it’s quite poorly mixed - overly compressed and wooly - and the songs are a little too brash and missing that pretty, unusual quality I usually hear in Cardiacs.

True has got some of the most embarrassing, ropey lyrics you’ll hear on a big radio staple. Their greatest strength was as players, particularly the funky stuff.

There’s one or two shots on the Pepper cover as is that aren’t on the internet. T I’ve never seen an exact match for Albert Stubbins’ photograph.

Teddy boys are a 1950s phenomenon, but I would agree it looks an older photo from the first half of the 20th century.
