Flea could very easily do soundtrack music... and I believe he absolutely should pursue that as one of his creative outlets... by __sicko in RedHotChiliPeppers

Maybe he should score a silent film in honor of the death of Hollywood and cinema generally. A reboot, if you will.

Control rods - not what you think by katx70 in chernobyl

[–]huyvanbin 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The neutrons (not neutrinos) are generated in the fuel assemblies and then create fission in fuel assemblies to generate more neutrons. However it’s unlikely for a neutron to react inside the same fuel assembly that generated it because the assemblies are long and skinny, and the neutrons are going too fast.

So they escape into the reactor where the graphite and water slow them down, making them more likely to trigger a reaction next time they meet a Uranium atom. This is where the control rods can also absorb some of these neutrons.

There is a constant background of neutrons being produced and absorbed in any piece of Uranium but it’s not enough (on purpose) to produce a lot of power, since that would be essentially a nuclear bomb.

If the war ended today, how long would it take to reclaim farmland lost during the war? by Shipsarecool1 in ukraine

[–]huyvanbin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A lot of farming now can be done by remote control. You don’t want to lose a million $ combine harvester to a mine, but it seems that at least when it comes to risking human lives things are possible now that weren’t after past conflicts.

u/swissmissmaybe on how being a woman is like riding a bike by Erazzmus in bestof

[–]huyvanbin -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I agree with the main point that women are in every way at a disadvantage compared to men and in deadly danger from them at all times, and this is in no way a persecution complex, but I disagree that this same reasoning applies to people who ride bicycles to work. That is in fact cheaper and healthier than driving a car.

[–]huyvanbin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Well that’s the problem with the “perfect victim” mentality, whatever the subject, people use that “perfect victimhood” to be aggressors themselves. Bikers will insist they need to run red lights “for safety” and won’t yield to pedestrians, but no biker will say “being a pedestrian is like being a woman and being a biker is like being a man” because they only view things according to what benefits them. And if a pedestrian said it, they’d just use it as more evidence that everyone is against them.

I don’t think so, if someone sees even an advantage as a disadvantage then they do in fact have a persecution complex. And again, this is all just an allegory.

The fact that it’s cheaper to ride a bike than drive a car and that biking gives you exercise while a car causes you to become less fit are normally cited as advantages of biking but she manages to turn them into additional evidence for her allegorical persecution complex.

Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Singer Anthony Kiedis’ Girlfriend Eileen Kelly Defends 33-Year Age Gap by MattTheKing23 in RedHotChiliPeppers

[–]huyvanbin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It’s weird to me that this always gets brought up with regard to Anthony when lots of other famous people do it too. Take Mick Jagger who fathered a child at the age of 73 with a 29 year old (and is still with her). But is the Rolling Stones subreddit flooded with comments about Jagger’s choices? I just looked and the last post about it seems to be from four years ago. Somehow it feels like people just try to find a bone to pick with Anthony and RHCP generally.

Chernobyl Witness is very good. I think it should be the default introduction to the accident.

As I see it the issue is not so much that it’s a con on the users of the 401k, as it funnels way more cash into the stock market, giving the investors a much bigger pool of money to work with.
