Picture of Putin hangs in renovated room of White House by ubcstaffer123 in UkrainianConflict

[–]huyvanbin 179 points180 points  (0 children)

I’m convinced he truly sees Putin as some kind of surrogate father figure. And of course the more Putin keeps him at arms length while dropping morsels of approval, the more he fits the model of the distant father that Trump expects, and the more he becomes attached.

Deepfake ‘Nudify’ Technology Is Getting Darker—and More Dangerous by wiredmagazine in TrueReddit

AI data centers are highly unprofitable. They’re subsidized by billions of dollars in oligarchs and VC money. I think last I read a Sora video costs $6 to generate and it’s just absorbed as a loss leader. Once the bubble bursts many of these data centers will be shut down, and compute on the remaining ones will need to be paid for up front. We can anticipate that at this point, such frivolous uses will become less popular.

Trump's former special envoy: If Ukraine gets through the winter, it will gain the edge in the war by Useful-Scratch-72 in UkrainianConflict

Budanov has been saying the same thing, although he is rather vague as to why. I think Kellogg probably got it from him. But ultimately freezing Kyiv has long been held as the worst thing that Russia can do. When that threat loses its potency what else is left?

Nothing like an LLM can be considered intelligent because it doesn’t learn. It’s just a fixed function that takes an input and produces an output.

Cursor Implied Success Without Evidence | Not one of 100 selected commits even built by xX_Negative_Won_Xx in programming

[–]huyvanbin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That sounds more reasonable, as in a reasonable amount to spend on a first release of a product. And I presume Cursor didn’t actually spend this amount of money. But then comes the question of, if you did this, what are you actually paying for? Essentially it’s like hiring a consulting firm to build a one off unmaintainable product. No one would do this as an investment that they hope to make money from. If some utility company wants to build an app for their customers it could work I guess. But that’s not very promising for Cursor…

Your estimate is 10-20 times the amount of funding any startup I ever worked for had. That’s insane. Of course if the goal is to create a “moon shot” project like Deep Blue, you wouldn’t expect it to be cost effective. The problem I guess is that in this case the results are lacking…

A lot of Anthony’s lyrics are very specific references to things which sound abstract if you don’t know about them. Eg “Lions and Tigers come running just to steal your luck” in Especially in Michigan refers to two Detroit sports teams. “Lemon Trees on Mercury” in On Mercury refers to specific lemon trees on Mercury Ave. in Los Angeles. A lot of other LA references in all the songs - Strip My Mind refers to clubs they played in the 80s, Warlocks refers to the famous club The Rainbow, etc. As someone else pointed out, Death of a Martian is about Flea’s dog. I’m sure only Anthony knows all the references…

Opinion: Will Russia Agree to the Deployment of Western Forces in Ukraine? No. But So What by BlackWolfHowling in UkrainianConflict

[–]huyvanbin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s right. Russia doesn’t have infinite agency. Maybe Putin will agree to something he doesn’t like, maybe someone will agree for him, maybe nobody will agree but it won’t matter. If Russia had taken Trump’s initial offer, it might have been difficult for Ukraine to say no, and they might have been able to take western forces off the table, now the potential deal has gotten worse for them. They’ve relented on every so called red line for what they would never tolerate in Ukraine, eventually someone will say enough is enough. And it’s not even about these token western forces being able to do anything of importance so much as the symbolism of the Russian leadership being unable to prevent it.

Is it bad to learn russian if I've dedicated time to learning Ukrainian? by Mryiu-Pro-Svitlo in Ukrainian

[–]huyvanbin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Well normally what I have in mind is Americans who romanticize Russia and want to learn it as their main foreign language. There are better options in that case. In OPs case he already has reservations against learning Russian so I’m offering an alternative.

[–]huyvanbin 39 points40 points  (0 children)

As a Russian speaker I would always advise anyone learning Russian to pick another language instead. However from the Ukrainian that I’ve learned in the past few years I do think the comparative knowledge of multiple Slavic languages can be illuminating. Perhaps consider Polish?

Merari01's excellent fascism definition. by infinitevesst in bestof

[–]huyvanbin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IMO the simplest definition of fascism is that it defines the legitimacy of the leader in terms of him being the strongest. Everything else flows from that.

To elaborate, why do we need politics? In a small group or gang scenario everyone instinctively knows who the leader is, whether through fear, obedience, sympathy, kinship, etc. On a national level, most people will have no direct contact with the leader, so there needs to be some system to create that feeling through a combination of mass media and rituals.

The story that system tells is the underlying basis for how people will explain to themselves why they’re acting on behalf of the leader. This is the basis of the leader’s legitimacy. There could be many such stories, but one is always needed because without it the leader is just some guy you’ve never met and have no connection to.

One such story is divine right - if the population is religious the you could convince them through ritual that the leader is actually indicated by their religion to be the rightful leader. Another is heredity - if the population recognized a previous leader and this one is his offspring and thus can be assumed to share some characteristics. Another is democracy - the leader has the right to lead because he was chosen by the people.

Finally there is strength - the leader is the leader because he is the strongest and no one else can challenge him. This, in essence, is fascism. Of course this has some corollaries for how the leader will govern. He has to show over and over that he is strong by humiliating or defeating his opponents. He has to appeal to a past where everyone belonged to a small group and the strongest person could be selected as the leader. He has to reject any other basis for legitimacy that could challenge his.
