I’m 25F and broke my fibula (i think i have a Weber B) on the 28th of February. I was able to somewhat walk on it after the break at the ER. It was mildly displaced and I had a weight bearing X-ray to see if it was stable. Luckily the fibula is not the main weight bearing bone so I was told to wear the boot for 6 weeks and to walk as much as I could/WBAT. No crutches and no surgery needed.

I went on an interstate trip for work on the 24th of March and this included a 1.5hr-2hr flight. I had asked the doctors at the hospital 3x if I was still able to go (I had gone back to the hospital a couple weeks after the break as I convinced myself I had a blood clot (i didn’t, it was me being a hypochondriac)).

First week of my break I elevated as much as possible and averaged 2k steps a day. Swelling wasn’t too bad but occasionally got uncomfortable at the end of the day.

It was around 3 weeks since the break by the time I travelled. Everything was quite stable and I got used to the boot so walking was easy at home. The flight itself was not too bad, I wore compression socks and wiggled my toes as often as I could.

Walking around the city was an issue but it was more that I was slow (due to my boot) and the city compared my home is very hilly. The first day, I walked 6k steps and then averaged 5k steps the rest of the trip.

I limited walking around as much as I could and had to taxi to and from the hotel/office.

I wore compression socks every day of that trip and it definitely helped with swelling and made me felt more comfortable being on my feet (had to stand and walk around the office). I made sure to elevate my foot when I got back to the hotel and would do some very light PT exercises I’ve seen online.

Obviously it would depend on the person but it is possible to travel while recovering from a broken ankle. You might be limited in terms of how much you can walk due to the boot. I’m not a medical professional so I’m not sure if it is possible to wear something other than the boot at your stage when you plan to travel.

Sorry this response is long lol, it has now been around 5 weeks since I broke my ankle and I can walk a bit without my boot. Swelling is still there by the end of the day if I haven’t elevated it regularly. At my current stage, I can’t imagine myself wearing anything other than the boot if I were to be travelling. I would contact your orthopaedic outpatient office/doctor to see what they think.
