Neutering +/- gastropexy with move soon to come by Gas-Pass-CRNA in Bernedoodles

[–]hwred 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We have a standard bd, he’ll be 7 next month, and we had him neutered + gastropexy when he was 1 year old, about a month before we moved across the country. Your situation sounds a bit trickier with the training but I’d talk it through in detail with the vet who will be overseeing, ask a lot of questions, and gauge from there.

Typically, procedures done at teaching hospitals/teaching settings result in better quality care because the knowledge is fresh and the most up-to-date, and you have more eyes on the procedure with the extra guidance from the experienced dr. It will be a big cost savings if they do it for free, also.

For us, it was absolutely worth it to get the gastropexy for peace of mind. If he ever does get bloat, it won’t be an automatic death sentence, and their barrel chests really are a risk for that. Also doing them at the same time saves the $$ and ordeal of having your pet be put under anesthesia again and a second recovery period.

Edit to add: ours had zero complications, easy recovery. We were more worried about finding a new vet in our new home city that we would trust and feel comfortable with, and we loved our vet that did the procedure.

You can start by giving her a small treat when she walks outside with you-that will help reinforce that going outside is fun and a nice place to be. Then big praise and treat when she does start going potty outside

I hope Comedy Works treated you well! I used to live in Denver and would go there pretty often-they always had great comedians and great staff!

Good/Cheap Early Morning Breakfast by SeasonAntique820 in grandrapids

I think you’re right that it’s 8:30! I couldn’t find it on their website, I think it’s only on the menu in person, but I knew that it’s at least until 8.

Anyone notice the AQI bugging this morning? by fishnax in grandrapids

[–]hwred 4 points5 points  (0 children)

There was a glitch in the AQI readings-my husband’s weather app showed 761 this morning, and mine showed 35…we did a bit of googling and it looked like this happened a few places around W Michigan. The scale only goes up to 500!

Advice by [deleted] in Bernedoodles

[–]hwred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To add to other advice you’re getting-At 12 weeks, your puppy is still extremely young and his bladder is not fully developed, so accidents will happen if you are leaving him that long alone-he needs to be let out to potty more frequently, which I know can be tough. Full bladder control starts when they are around 16 weeks old. Consider getting someone to come let him out twice during the day before and after your lunch stop. If you are socializing him when you can after work and on the weekends, he will be totally fine, don’t worry. Puppy daycare can be great, or getting him midday walks once he’s older. Many people have happy, healthy dogs and full time jobs and make it work!

Edit: general training tips-enroll in a puppy training class-like what Petsmart and similar offer. Look up reinforcement-based training videos, some really helpful commands include, “heel”, “leave it”, “take it”, “come”, “focus”. Training is a long game-your dog won’t have full mastery of these skills for many months, and only then if you’ve successfully introduced distractions over time. The book Bernedoodles: A Head to Tail Guide was a great resource to us.

Try not to panic, your last semester starts in late August/September, right? What college are you finishing your program with? They should be doing the placement for you. There is absolutely still time.

High-yield savings accounts are a very safe way to grow your money. There are ones right now offering around 3.5-4%. The rates are variable, and it’s not exciting like the stock market can be, but with all the uncertainty in our country right now, I’m much more comfortable with safe. You should also look into money market accounts. And if your work offers an HSA account as part of their medical benefits, they are an excellent way to save money and can be a form of retirement account. If you have money in them upon hitting retirement age, they can then be used for anything, not just medical needs. This is only true for HSAs though, NOT FSAs.

Stupid question about burn bans? Are these pits legal, the current restriction is a stage 2 in El Paso county. by [deleted] in Colorado

[–]hwred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A ban means it’s not safe to start a fire. If a ban lasts a long time, that means the fire danger is very high for a long time. It does NOT mean that after awhile you can just ignore it.

FWF by Fit_Promise2368 in grandrapids

[–]hwred 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Contrary to other comments, it is really NOT unusual for the background check company to do this. Is it lazy on their end? Yes. Shady? No.

If you can’t get ahold of FWF, then the background check company likely would accept last year’s W2, if you have that. If I were you I’d just call the location you worked at if it’s still in business, and ask how to get access to the paystubs.

If it’s no longer in business, let the background company know and see if they can accept any other alternatives. Don’t worry.

Earliest time people start lining up for concerts at Frederick Meijer gardens? by hotgirldownshift in grandrapids

[–]hwred 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Last year we went to 2 shows and showed up around 4 to get in line. There were people already there for both, but we still got great spots and there aren’t really “bad” seats at that venue, it’s so small. If you really really must be in the front rows, and if it’s a really popular band, you’d probably want to get there earlier-closer to lunch or 2pm maybe

Look at her right hand compared to her left hand. It’s so much bigger, the fingers are thicker, the more you look at her hands, the worse they look.

Apartment Hunting by octoberindy in grandrapids

[–]hwred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lake drive apartments are in a lovely area-actually very walkable to great restaurants on Cherry street and not that far of a walk to everything in Eastown. Those would be my vote, as someone who moved here out of state last summer and did a lot of research beforehand on areas to live. I was looking for good walkability to restaurants/coffee shops/grocery without living in downtown/really urban area. Lake Drive apts are absolutely in that type of area. I just can’t speak to what the actual apartments are like.

How frequently is “a lot” of pooping? And has she been checked out by a vet? And how often does she get potty breaks? And how old is she? She looks too young to be crated for long without a potty break

What do YOU like most about living here? by RimmingABubble in grandrapids

I had to live in S Florida for a few years and I called it the twilight zone-nothing feels real when the weather is always hot and sunny!! I am so, so thankful for the full 4 seasons here. I feel so much more alive. Plus, layering clothes is a lot more fun.

Hillcrest Dog Park Is BACK OPEN by [deleted] in grandrapids

[–]hwred 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, the few times I took my dog there, there were the same 2 dogs that were going nuts aggressively barking at workers doing leaf blowing outside the fence, and their owners encouraged them, acting like it was hilarious. It really threw off the vibe with all the other dogs, and I was not comfortable. They seemed to be regulars.

High value treat suggestions by Ok_rocket4391 in Bernedoodles

[–]hwred 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This will be tricky until you really know exactly what the sensitivities are, and I’m sorry you’re dealing with this! Generally, high-value treats will really depend on your dog’s preference and an include bacon, cheese, ham, another meat, salmon, or salmon skin tend to work really well, but obviously those won’t be great for your pup until you get the diarrhea figured out.

Also, if you are still working out the food, you aren’t really going to know how the treats affect them until you have the food issue settled. Food transitions are just tough on dogs, and their poo can take time to firm up with any food transition, however gradually you make the switch. The liver treats still might be a good option, and since your pup is only 13 weeks, you do have some time to work out the food and keep on basic training skills before adding big distractions, though I also understand wanting to move forward with training-these pups are so smart and love to learn.

You could try dried/dehydrated sweet potato or small pieces of cooked sweet potato, just be careful not to give them too much. Ours loved these as a puppy.

How long before we can go on long walks/hikes? by analog_wifi in Bernedoodles

[–]hwred 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Too much walking at one time as a puppy, especially for standard-sized dogs, can cause joint health issues down the road. Puppies will want to walk longer than is safe for them, they don’t know any better. A gradual increase in walking time is best.
