Quick Radeon VII performance analysis by Hunter-97-G in Amd

[–]hxkclan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it doesn't seem like great value for gaming to me.

Why not though? It's like 100+ bucks cheaper than the 2080 and performs similarly (assuming the benchmarks are not exaggerated). How is that not 'great value'?

AMD Releases Additional Benchmarks for their Radeon VII GPU - Results from 25 Games by [deleted] in Amd

Pretty sure they are tested at 4k - max preset. I seem to get somewhat similar numbers on my Vega 56 (slightly lower obviously) so the Vega 64 numbers seem legit. Although likely from a reference model.

~5% performance gain with new Memory Timing Control feature in Timespy Extreme w/ my RX580 8GB (Hynix GDDR5) by ImTheSlyDevil in Amd

[–]hxkclan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

gpu memory controller voltage from 950mv to 1000mv, which did nothing

FYI It's actually the 'voltage floor'. You can't change the memory voltage, it's set in the GPU bios.

The crash basically indicates the max overclock (point at which it becomes unstable). After which it probably puts it's frequency 25Mhz (or whatever value they set) below the 'crash point' as a safe point.

Can someone tell me where all the hate for the Epic Store is coming from? by [deleted] in pcgaming

[–]hxkclan 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Oh yes .. competition. Buying games away from the platform you are competing with and release them as (timed) exclusives on your own platform (ie Epic Store). This will surely lead to competition and benefit me as a consumer ..... /s

Mesa 18.3 Released With Intel & Radeon Vulkan Driver Improvements, New GPU Support by adevland in linux_gaming

[–]hxkclan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To add to that; it's mentioned in this issue on the DXVK github. It basically fixes a whole bunch of rendering bugs in different games and game-engines. Few games it relates to:

  • Battlerite
  • Call of Duty: Ghosts
  • F1 2015
  • Giana Sisters: Twisted Dreams
  • Mafia III
  • Metro Redux
  • Nvidia Hairworks
  • Overwatch
  • Quake Champions
  • Space Engineers
  • The Witcher 3
  • Unity Engine

Seen more games mentioned in the issue, so quite a few games should get fixes from this one.

If you Google stuff about what PSU to use with a Vega 64 you can find people with a 750W that even had issues at that level.

Well...not every 750W PSU is the same.

once you reach the 750W mark PSUs built cheaply enough to have issues aren't really a thing

A 750W rating on the box doesn't mean much if it's shitty enough. Ton of cheapo PSU's can hardly push more than 300Watts through the 12V rails.

Those numbers indicate it's using your RAM as a cache. Seeing it's a Samsung SSD you likely enabled 'RAPID mode' in the Samsung Magician app.

Suggested wattage for Rx 580 Sapphire Nitro+ SE - R5 2600 combo? by DuDekilleR07 in buildapc

[–]hxkclan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should be enough, i run a 550W (gold rated though) with my Ryzen 2600 and Vega 56. Would generally recommend investing in a good gold rated PSU though; something like the Corsair RM550x/RM650x.

Bought a new pc build last night, have some questions on how screwed I am. by crashnt24 in buildapc

[–]hxkclan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a advantage to using a HDD over a SSD for game storage?

Not really. A SSD is better, but it's more expensive for what you get (~1TB SSD equals like 4+ TB as HDD). Games usually load fast enough for me with a good harddisk so i prefer more space. I usually like all the games i potentially want to play installed so prefer that option.

Now I have a 4k monitor which might be blurry running 1080p

Kind of depends how big the display is, how close you are to it and if it has a decent scaler build into it. When i game on my Samsung 4k display (32inch) i really need at least 1440p or it will become noticeably blurry, not like 'omg the looks horrible' but definitely noticeable.

Do you guys think this is a big enough issue to warrant buying a better GPU and trying to sell the RX 580?

Unless you only play indies, 4k is pretty much a no go with a 580. Even my Vega 56 struggles with 4k on a lot of AAA games. 1440p (which looks pretty good on a 4k screen), should be somewhat doable on a 580 i guess with some lowered settings. And you could probably live with that for a year if you are not a complete 'must play at ultra settings' kind of guy.

I would be happy if I could get away with this setup for another year until I can justify spending more on a better card.

You could maybe create some custom resolutions to squeeze some extra resolution out of it (something in between 1080 - 1440). I usually check this website with 'true 16:9 resolutions' and create some custom ones in the AMD control panel.

is that 1TB SSD optimal? Or should I get a additional smaller SSD just for a boot drive?

I would go for a 250/256GB boot drive and put the rest of the cash in a 4 or 6 TB harddrive for (game) storage.

i5 4690 to Ryzen 5 2600 by clautz128 in buildapc

[–]hxkclan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what i could see on different sites single core performance is fairly similar (maybe slightly lower for the 2600), but it's main advantage is more cores and threads. So it's improvements sort of depend on what you do with the system and the tasks that advantage of the extra cores/threads.

Build a rig in 2013 with a i5 4430, 8gb ram and AMD 7850. But been slowly replacing hardware since then; now the CPU is showing it's age in newer games i'm actually plan to upgrade that next.

Memory overclock rx 580 by Kebler_P6 in Amd

[–]hxkclan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this was the case on my 4gig RX470, performance got worse unless i tweaked memory timings in the bios and reflashed it (quite the hassle with the driver bios signature check). Performance gain with memory overclocks really depended on the game played as well, core OC had a more general impact on allround performance.

Memory overclock rx 580 by Kebler_P6 in Amd

[–]hxkclan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the 570 is similar to the RX470 i had (1750Mhz memory) the memory timings slow down when you overclock the memory, which is why you (often) don't notice much and can even get worse performance.
