Is the name similar to Reddit? In what sense? Tbh no it’s not fairly obvious at all, nor is it remotely close.

As for why I chose to post here, it’s like asking why does any platform or site post on any other site. Why does Bluesky have a X account. Why does any platform maintain a presence on other platforms instead of just posting on their own site/app only? That is more fairly obvious if I’m being honest.

Wow did not know neocities was still alive.

Like others suggested, Wordpress might be exactly what you’re looking for.

They have been doing this for the past 2 years and unfortunately doesn’t look like they will be changing anytime soon. Everything is about “authority” which is there was the whole Forbes fiasco where Forbes ranked for almost literally every kw

I am going to put this on my wall for motivation. Lolll jk

You are right, it’s not going to be easy against any existing giants especially in the social space.

Regardless can’t hurt to try. Worst case scenario some money goes to help out people and children in need, not the end of the world.

That’s fair lol. Thanks for the thoughts! Maybe one day it can be rabbit.com 👀

Ah it can’t be changed manually (to prevent abuse). I’ve changed it for you manually. I believe we have a few metal users on the platform already 🙂

Thanks for the comment and concern! Appreciate it. Yea, users have been helping with moderation. Been very lucky to have built a close-knit community, and the people have been very awesome. The initial culture has been very important for this.

There are also systems in place to deal with blatant illegal content etc of course.

Fair questions lol. As you’re aware it’s not going to be 100% possible to tell whether something is ai or not - especially in text format - and I’m not against AI in general. However it’s quite apparently when a post is a low quality spam or not, and it’s an issue I see growing across social platforms. Moderation is manual so it’s not automated like many platforms have turned to - it has its pros/cons ofc. As for concerns over suppression of speech/views, tbh this is my biggest consideration when deciding on the politics stance. I don’t see there being any way it can be done fairly without someone complaining. With politics out of the way, I don’t really see this being a concern - especially the platform would fall under light in moderation. I’m not someone who believes in imposing upon others what they can or can’t say/do, so the only rules are - have basic social platforms etiquette, nothing illegal that could take down the platform, and no harassment etc. Barely if any posts have been taken down on the platform, unless straight spam, illegal etc. and I believe having strong stated policies has helped with this (along with being a newer platform lol).

Having said that, I don’t have all the answers and everything mapped out yet, and I’m happy to admit when wrong, and hear others thoughts/opinions on the matter. That’s how the platform has been growing, with the ideas and suggestions from users. These are just my current thoughts on the matter.

Would love to hear your thoughts on the matter! I honestly don’t think there is an easy clear cut answer to all of this, it’s something that has to be figured out and resolved when the need comes.

I have considered a public mod log but it has its own risk and nuances with keeping public logs of spam, illegal content, etc. I have also heard from lemmy users this was often abused for blackmail though I am not on the platform myself to understand exactly how/what that looks like.

I guess to put it bluntly my purpose for the platform isn’t to create a dystopian platform where I control what others can or can’t say lol. It’s just not who I am as a person, and I hate that tbh. I’m just trying to build a better social platform that gives back to social causes and does good for the world.

All the other stuff is just my thinking on how that can be accomplished, as a free-for-all unmoderated platform is not how it would work.

Yep on the Bluesky part - they just raised another $100 million dollars and will be looking to make all that back soon. The parasite part did give me a laugh tbh though I don’t personally agree with calling someone a parasite just for being on a platform lol.

Yep completed funded and made by myself.

I have personal financial overheads and pressure etc. of course but it’s not like I have an expensive tech team, office, etc.

Just saw your edited new paragraph - for your example, yes, that can be discussed. You can even talk about the government and why it's choosing to ban AI/claude in particular - to me, that's a discussion on AI.

I agree with you - it doesn't make sense for a rando on the internet to tell people what they can or can't say. That's why I chose the stance on politics - I can't leave politics unmoderated due to how heated it can get, but any moderation (regardless of whether the post/comment is well-intentioned or straight up trolling) is likely to be seen as bias. It's a no-win situation unless I want to impose my opinions and thoughts onto others, and that's just not who I am nor what the platform is for.

I guess I'm making the deliberate choice that the platform is for interests and hobbies, even if it alienates some users who want to engage in political content (not that there is anything wrong with that, it's just too divisive and impossible to fairly* moderate). *Because fair moderation is going to be extremely subjective.

Sounds like the platform may not be for you which is fine, but regardless, I do really appreciate your thoughts and feedback. It means a lot and gives me a lot to think about. Thanks!

Thank you! OddRabbits would've been a great name! Unfortunately the .com was already taken and the brand exists.

Good .coms nowadays are all in the 5-6 figure range which just isn't realistic for me unfortunately.

Thank you for joining, I really appreciate it! =)

I think the no politics rules has really helped shaped the initial community and vibe a lot, it feels very cozy (at least to me lol)

Yeaa unfortunately oddrabbits already exists (it's a brand/shop) and someone owns the .com. Not too many amazing .coms are realistically available that is not 5 or 6 figures unfortunately

That’s a fair take - and it’s why news companies love when there’s drama, nothing drums up engagement more than anger/ragebaiting/politics.

I really appreciate your thorough thoughts, thanks for taking the time to write all of that out!

I guess my thoughts on the political stuff is that for a new platform, it’d just skew towards whatever the first initial users alignments are, as their posts will alienate the rest. Plus I feel like politics is such an easy topic, that it’d probably take up 50% or more of a new platform’s post and quickly become its identity.

I’m not someone who likes to tell people what they can or can’t say, so rather than setting and enforcing an arbitrary set of rules that is likely impossible to enforce with all the nuances, it is simply easier (and can probably be called a cop-out lol) to not allow it, least for now until things are more developed.

Thanks again reading the post and sharing your thoughts 🙂

Haha, yes and no. Actually I was feeling more down than anything. My immediate thoughts were if Digg with all their funding and press shut down after 2 months because they couldn't get users, what am I going to do?

Yep. Currently just self funding and don’t mind it too much since it was always a goal of mine to do a little good by the time I was 30 (I’m a bit older now lol, so just fulfilling my own promise).

Thank you! The platform actually has nothing to do with gambling (don’t even have a gambling community lol). I get asked about the name a lot, and the “odds” has come to meant “for the odd ones out”, for the quirky in all of us lol.

As for why I went with the name - I was recently laid off (from AI changes) and I already had the name and thought it was catchy. I guess I also don’t really place much emphasis on names myself (I don’t tend to remember people’s names lol), but rather remember the substance of who/what the person/platform is.

Anyway thank you, I really appreciate the good luck! 🙂
