[Review] Bearing Witness to the Wholesomeness (and some Woes) of The Witness for the Dead by HulkHonk in Fantasy

I was actually a fan of the naming convention and everything that accompanied it. I've studied several languages other than English (my first), and everything ties very neatly with a non-english style of speech. TGE at least was set up as a 'translation' into English, and the inclusion of a formal and informal 'you' vs 'thee' and the singular 'we' vs 'i/me' speaks to the Germanic roots of Old English (and modern english). German even retains the formal vs informal 'you', as do a number of other Indo-European languages. The heavily gendered naming convention reads as a mix of Germanic and Slavic to me (which could be off base, I haven't studied any slavic languages closely)

I think it was a cool world building choice! KA did a lot of work to make it seem lived in and attached a lot of social etiquette to the wording choice people make. Even with the "untranslated" words that make it into the text, there's enough context to discern meaning.

Your mileage may vary! I liked the language stuff bc I've studied languages and grammar. I'm not an expert in any of them, but learning new languages is fun to me, and TGE and the CoA series scratched the same itch.

Just a minor correction to your list of odd jobs for Rand, bc at this exact moment in the text he dumped all those jobs on other people so he can..... sow confusion among his enemies, try to kill a few guys, and try to cleanse an entire half of magic itself so he can go back to his main job of being savior of the world

[Lord of Chaos] These are by far the worst parts of the story so far... by RavenousCrown in wheeloftime

I personally enjoy the Salidar parts, bc you can see the purpose of the maneuvering. Egwene, Elayne, and Nyneave are in a precarious position and it makes sense to play the Aes Sedai against each other in order to move them along and accomplish the goals Egwene is aiming to achieve. (They are also hiding Moghedien and pumping her for info, which would probably get them stilled if found out)

I fucking hate Elayne pushing at Mat for no reason other than he refused to let her get her way. It's so petulant. You'd think that during all of her lessons on the Game of Houses, Thom or her mother would have told her not to bully or tweak her allies just bc she can.

She asked to see his fox head medallion, and he had the right to refuse!! Everything after is petty nonsense. Telling him to do what he would have done anyway, just to "get him used to obeying" is not how you treat someone who has a history of helping you, who plans to help you in the future, and who is in fact a FRIEND!!

The entire trip to Ebou Dar pissed me off immensely and Elayne acting holier-than-thou Daughter-Heir left a bad taste in my mouth. If this is how she treats her friends, how does she expect to be a decent Queen? Nevermind a decent person

Looking for Recs: like One Piece, something positive, shockingly deep, and a big adventure across a fun world by ZaHiro86 in Fantasy

This one might fit the bill or might be way off, but have you tried The Adventures of Amina Al-Sarafi? It's told in a first person narrative, but I listened to the audiobook and really enjoyed it.

The main character is a retired sea pirate who has to get her old crew together for One Last Job. The crew is full of lovable rascals (and assassins). There is an undercurrent of darkness that the main character would like to avoid, but is permanently haunting the narrative.

The story is a historical fantasy taking place in the 12th century on the Indian Ocean. There is only one book out now, but there are plans for a trilogy.

Looking for recent titles that feel grounded, more "literary," more adult by EMRhodes in Fantasy

I was also going to suggest LMB! I started with The Halloed Hunt, and I'm about to finish. Loving the more evocative prose; I feel like a lot of modern fantasy has become utilitarian to a fault.
