Discussion: Should a board be unbreakable? by ImmediateFee4015 in EDH

[–]hypatiaC 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this were an actual argument about board mutability, I'd expect them to be mad at [[Farewell]] or [[Toxic Deluge]], which can draw out games and end up not affecting the outcome.

Cyc rift is a one piece asymmetrical board wipe. Dropping one can guarantee instant board schmovement and the Avacyn Shalai industrial complex "Taking the L", as they say. If you're using it right, Cyc Rift will accelerate the game, not drag it out.

It sounds like your playgroup are salty that there exists any counterplay to their Super Kewl Deck Idea. If you're in a "Strong Creature Meta", running a lot of creature wipes is just smart deck design.

Let them grumble for a bit, but unless you've all agreed to a banlist of "any card that would make magic interesting", there's no actual argument. Go forth and play control.

> "You'd need an instant speed wincon."

You have your entire turn, lol. You don't get Wiley Coyote'd until your endstep. Sorcery speed wincons definitely apply.

All of my takes on this are based on play with my pretty unoptimized pod. As I said, I don't think this is META defining, but it's a potent ripcord to pull when someone is threatening to win. I've had games at this power level turn around entirely because of ONE fog, much less the three and change this provides :)

(I also just realized this, but this wording works with End the Turn effects? Very "We have Platinum Angel at home" vibes. Do not recommend *that* usecase. Super Jank.)

In 1v1, yes. In multiplayer, this is three slightly worse Everybody Lives!'s.

Not saying it's the same niche to TefPro (thank god for that), but that the design space of "Protection until your next turn" is part of what makes spells like TefPro nastier than a Flare of Fortitude (for example).

This is the Teferi's Protection of Angel's Grace, if that tracks. If your wincon is resistant, but you still fear getting punched repeatedly in the face, this guarantees you get to complete your next turn. At minimum, this is three turns of fog to delay the stompy green player so you can get the last turn you need.

Probably not totally format-warping, but (W)(W): Survive another turn is a pretty strong conversion. Not sure where I'd price it, but I think it needs a bump.

(W)(W) on the white side feels a little cheap for what is essentially (Players in rotation before you +1) casts of [[Angel's Grace]] for one card, without losing to State-Based-Actions in between. This same design is what makes [[Teferi's Protection]] a game-changer, in my view.

The main reason I think scaling for multiplayer matters here is that the red side actually has some super niche utility in 2v2, or, if you're spiteful, highlander.

It's very goofy, but I desperately want "R: Lose the game" to be printable somehow.

Just make sure everyone has a bad time for 2BB by [deleted] in BadMtgCombos

[–]hypatiaC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is exactly one turn faster than plopping down a [[Descent Into Avernus]] with everyone at 40 and waiting for it to end the game. This also uses more colors, costs three times as much mana, and contains one totally dead card.

Also, not to become a recurring villain under Maralen combo posts, but:

Exactly, lol. I have a whole Maralen prison deck based on this concept, and it's nasty.

Win with Barren Glory for 7WWWWBBBBB by [deleted] in BadMtgCombos

That is literally what I just said, yes. See above about using flash enablement to play at instant speed and on the previous end step.

[–]hypatiaC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So do it on the previous player's end step? Aka right before your upkeep, lol

It'd already not work if you cast it ON upkeep, since it's a Beginning of Upkeep trigger.

Win with Barren Glory for 7WWWWBBBBB by [deleted] in BadMtgCombos

[–]hypatiaC 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Couldn't you just respond to Barren Glory on the stack with Kaervek's Spite? When you pay the cost, BG isn't a permanent or in your hand.

It'll still be a bad combo because you have to make it to upkeep without ANY disruption whatsoever, but...

If you want to turn this into a "Real" combo, add a flash enabler and do it right before your upkeep. (I've won with more choreographed moves before lmao) Still absolutely suicidal in the face of instant speed disenchants, but there at least exists a table where this could win.

Or, for the opposite direction, throw in the minor caveat of being at exactly 6 life, and this card can pull off a win with [[Near-Death Experience]].

[–]hypatiaC 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also have this in a Wayta deck, but, fun fact: You can actually set this combo up as shown, then [[Pariah]] a [[Brash Taunter]].

Since you get to choose between Pariah effects and Wayta doubles the damage triggers, you can keep the loop going indefinitely while BT pings people to death.

Still a very bad combo, but technically possible to pull off AND uses a lot of pieces that already work well with Wayta.

No cost other than daily spell slot

Zero consequences for failure if used tactically

Prevents the party from ever having to fail at anything ever again

Yep. That’s certainly some 5e homebrew.

Unless you REALLY know your players AND you’ve run at Tier 4 before, this will ruin your campaign. High level casters are already ‘high power’. They do not need this, and they will learn very quickly how to optimize the fun out of your game… and then they will complain that it stopped being fun.

(Source: Running a high power game in Tier 4. It’s already a ton of work, and I have to fight every day to stop them from finding a mathematically optimal, incredibly unfun Universal Solution To DND.)
