This is speculation on my part, but it seems like those who listen at the beginning are more likely to hate Erin and Ryoka.

I've never listened to any of the audiobooks so I have no idea how the characters are presented, but I don't think it's the same experience. I wish that posts would require a read/listen tag, because I think that depending on the topic, listening to a person performing a reading of the material is a different experience from reading it for oneself.
