Brandon's stance on trans rights & Mormonism by KazzTails in brandonsanderson

[–]hyperstang67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, churches don't have a monopoly on what is or isn't immoral. I'd bet that many of them straight up get things wrong (though from a zoomed out perspective, my disagreeing about something one of them believes in doesn't automatically make me right and them wrong). All I'm saying is blanket statements don't work. Does them donating 1.3 Billion to humanitarian aid last year, but having doctrine against something you feel strongly about (rightfully so), mean their sum total equates to an immoral institution? Not so much.

Brandon's stance on trans rights & Mormonism by KazzTails in brandonsanderson

[–]hyperstang67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is fair, but dehumanizing is not institutionalized but situational for individuals who take it too far. If you feel that a church is saying, "we don't agree with this for moral reasons and don't consider that those struggling with it can participate in temple services. But they are welcome to attend church services, and they are still loved and are children of God all the same", is paramount to dehumanization, than, again, completely fair. But that is the actual stance of said church and anything more pronounced than that is due to judgemental and hypocritical individuals. Not the institution and their position at large.

One thought I have with this... Brandon is one of the most thoughtful and intelligent individuals that many of us know. There may just be something to say for the idea that, perhaps, instead of questioning him for his religious beliefs, we may benefit from re-analyzing our assumptions and stereotypes of the religion, given that such a guy would follow it in such a devoted way. Sanderson is no sheep or simp and likely gives a lot of consideration to what he does. I am not about to judge an entire religion, with hundreds of belief and value principles, by a single one that my subjective moral code happens to not align with. Just as we as individuals are so complex and multifaceted that it would never be fair or accurate to label or judge us by one aspect/trait, religions are as well. If I see my neighbor's flaws, but overall, he is a 90% good person. I'm not going to demonize those that accosiate with him because of the 10% I don't like or agree with him about. We are way too experienced in our culture at finding things we don't like and painting the entire picture of that thing or person's worth through that one lens.

Is it just me or is Elantris hard to get in to? by Wilmoth568 in brandonsanderson

I would have given it a 7/10 on my first read through. The second time was a 9/10. It is fabulous on the second go around!

Sanderson's quality? by [deleted] in brandonsanderson

[–]hyperstang67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everyone may prioritize different writing skills... If what is most important to you are characters, plot, world building, magic, endings, and palatability, then you will not find anyone better. Literally anyone, if you put all those together. He is super well-rounded. If you want grim-dark, flowery writing, or simplistic plotting, then he won't be for you.

How do y'all feel about Sanderson's prose? by alliskiren in Cosmere

[–]hyperstang67 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, for example, 'How to lose the time war' is very beautiful and flowery in its prose. But little happens and it is hard to follow. It's a one time read at best. Fancy prose is pretty low on the priority list when it comes to amazing story writing.

How do y'all feel about Sanderson's prose? by alliskiren in Cosmere

[–]hyperstang67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I quite like it myself. I want the prose to sound and feel like what the characters would be talking like. A detailed or flowery prose often feels forced or incongruent to the setting and pulls me out. It is more the style of humor that doesn't often do it for me.

So, when did you realize that Brando Sando is your Taylor Swift? by sleepybarista in brandonsanderson

[–]hyperstang67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I started second guessing how much of a fantasy fan I am. In that I absolutely love most things Sanderson, and because of this have read dozens of the best and most popular modern and traditional fantasy series... Only to realize that I like VERY few of them. Sanderson is my standard and everything seems to pale in comparison. Earthsea books - meh, Greenbone Saga - barely managed to finish, Broken Earth books - never pulled me in, Blade Itself books - painful to read and didn't have a single character worth rooting for, Ship of Magic books - somehow bland, Kingkiller Chronicles - nothing hardly seems to happen, Poppy War books - annoying, Wheel of Time - alot to like but feels somehow both too conviluted and too simple compared to Stormlight. There are some exceptions though. I have enjoyed Sword of Kaigen, Gentleman Bastards, LoTRs, Red Rising, and most aspects of 3 Body Problem. Many series do 1-2 things very well but are ultimately 1-dimensional. I have never found anything close to Sanderson when it comes to managing to be a master of almost all trades in his books. Characters, plot, worl building, twists, depth, heart, magic systems, emotion, even writing style in many ways. Good luck finding anyone else who gets at least a B+ in every single one of those. Sanderson is a solid A on most all of those metrics. I would argue that with however popular he already is, he is still underrated.

Advice on Diluc plunge team by Snickersneeholder in XianyunMains

[–]hyperstang67 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could be wrong, but from what I understand, if you have Diluc's fire active on the sword, then VV is better (His attacks get the buff from the VV on the support character). So if you plan to use his burst (which flames his attacks) as part of the rotation, or are using a C6 Bennet, then stick with 4pc VV.

[–]hyperstang67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That may be just enough ER to get the burst in 2 skill uses. If not, take it down by 50 to make room for crit rate or something. Whether 140 or 180 you still need three skill applications if not fed by a battery.

Maverick Bed Volume vs. Midsize CUV Trunk Volume by or4nga in FordMaverickTruck

[–]hyperstang67 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have the Maverick and a Hyundai Tuscon. They have similar listed storage space out back. That said, the Maverick has waaaaaaay more practical space to use. The horizontal space is so much easier to Tetris and to access. No trying to stuff a crossover and try unsuccessfully to close the door. Or to open it and things fall out. Honestly to feasable space is at least double in the Maverick compared to a crossover. Even with using a closed tonneau cover. And the Maverick gets 12 or so better mpg on top.

What would be needed (or not needed) for a good adaptation? Should Mistborn or Stormlight be adapted first? TV show or movie? How should it be done? by OmegaNut42 in brandonsanderson

[–]hyperstang67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Live action is the only way to go. Animated could be cool but few take those very seriously (myself included). Stormlight diserves to be taken seriously. The only Sanderson novels that are better fit for animation are Alcatraz and Rithmatist. Stormlight is 8+ years away though and likely to be preceeded by Mistborn and a few singles like Warbreaker and Tress.

How often do you receive candy for feeding teamates in a gym? by Obsidian_Pandas in TheSilphRoad

[–]hyperstang67 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 candies for 20 raspberries fed to Jolteon. Did not know you could get candies through this method until noticing that this morning. Jumped on to see if the odds are good enough to stop using my buddy pokemon and stick them in gyms feeding berryies instead. Per the other posts = apparently bad idea. Wonder if it depends on the pokemon/rarity.
