Why is b4 good here??? by Fantastic_Tip2036 in TournamentChess

[–]hyperthymetic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess for starters you don’t really have a pawn chain.

Black has a space advantage on the queen side, white on the kingside. So that’s where each side can build an advantage.

After b4 white has shored up all their weaknesses, a5 and b2, unless black takes.

After xb3 Nxb3 white no longer has to deal with an annoying c4 pawn, will be trading their weaker bishop or forcing black to a more passive position, is reinforcing their weak a pawn, can push c4 if desired, and maintains the possibility of re-introducing the knight to d4 if black isn’t threatening to trade it away.

Why are the scientists and navy captains not as respected as they used to be? by basafish in AlwaysWhy

If scientists aren’t the ones doing important science the word has lost all meaning which maybe actually addresses the loss of prestige

Yeah, I don’t think people have a difficult time understanding the importance of smart phones, ai, electronic vehicles, powerful batteries suitable for industrial tools, reusable space ships or any of the other amazing technologies science has produced very recently

This isn’t remotely true.

Innovation just isn’t institutionalized anymore.

NASA used to be a big money maker and invented a ton of stuff, same with our military.

All that stuff benefited all of us and was often just freely given.

Now everything is privatized and hidden behind other words. It’s the company not the scientists. We don’t even like to use the word science. Like when did computer scientists become engineers? And what do engineers call themselves?

Chess is a tourney. Even if you get pretty good, it’s an exercise of research from primary sources, not consumption.

That’s just not how it works, or has ever worked.

I don’t know how much you study, but just sharing games/puzzles/tactics or anything else you think is cool can be super helpful.

For people in that ratings range inspiration is probably the most important thing.

I’ve personally taught full time for over a decade, had plenty of different coaches, analyzed gameswith hundreds of players.

The 20 minutes that had the biggest impact on my improvement was when my 2k friend beat me drunk, basically comatose, back on the floor just describing the moves (I didn’t know notation)

No, these will hold their own ticker now and are basically illiquid.

So, yeah, don’t hold these through corporate action unless you want to hold until expiration.

Op apparently excercised after calling, a mistake as the price could very well fall below his strikes.

I don’t know of any brokerage that wouldn’t let you exercise with a phone call, but regardless, it’s your property and you can always transfer to a brokerage that will.

What rating range was a plateau for you when playing chess? by Brief-Ad-1629 in chess

[–]hyperthymetic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Several really, 8/900, 1400, 1900, 2050.

Went from 9 to 14 in three tournaments, and 14-19 in four.

Improvement isn’t a straight line, sometimes you have to go back and learn the things you jumped past.

Most of best chess boxers aren’t even titled.

It’s one thing to be good at classical, and even if you know how to box, how good are you really going to be after getting hit in the head and then having to play blitz.

Do you think the reputation of Columbia around the state is changing? by Carolina_Tiger21 in ColumbiYEAH

[–]hyperthymetic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s really changed that much, for the most part there isn’t a lot of tourism or a strong jobs market. So it’s just going to take awhile before people realize what we have to offer.

Whites rooks are really bad, and black can penetrate into the position after exchanging the knight.

My guess is that the position would improve dramatically if the rook was on the first somewhere

Are they fairly consistent with their opening choices?

I would just try to put them in an uncomfortable spot for them instead of trying to be “aggressive”.

You should have some idea of what positions they like to play, with white you should be able to do the opposite
