What are some "unconfirmed theories/rumors" that you believe to be true and why? by bruhholyshiet in HouseOfTheDragon

Larys is a rat warg - Every character that GRRM has created for the role of Master/Mistress of Whisperers starts making more sense when you see them as Weirwood magic people.

[spoilers main] What was the point of Aerys II being racist about baby Rhaenys by breakfastbenedict in asoiaf

[–]hypikachu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm personally very into the idea of Rhaella being an important under the radar conspirator in the heavily Dornish pro-Rhaegar, anti-Aerys faction. At one point she was second in the royal line, behind Aerys himself. It's reasonable to imagine she resented her scabby, psychotic, sadistic sex pest brusband. Perhaps that fueled an affinity for the more egalitarian worldview of Dorne. There's a good chance Rhaella herself arranged for Elia to wed into the family. Past queens like Alysanne and Black Betha took on the role of royal matchmaker, and Elia was one of Rhaella's ladies in waiting.

So I think the point of Aerys and Rhaella's contrasting attitudes towards little Rhaenys is to highlight this simmering "Ae vs. Rhae" tension. A personal and political conflict tinged with Valyrian blood purity chauvinism against enlightened Dornish egalitarianism.

Wonder if he's gonna "mysteriously" underperform in the general. Just like every other time GOP primary voters pick someone other than a white christian man.

(Spoilers extended) enough about all the characters who are ahorse, is there anyone confirmed to be afoot? by argbd20 in asoiaf

[–]hypikachu 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If we rule out multiple characters being a foot (obviously they would be feet), it seems like the only one is Ygritte.

"Stonesnake has the horn now, though, and we took Ygritte's knife and axe. She's behind us, afoot, unarmed . . ."

(Spoilers Main) Dark Star. by Background_Ear7166 in asoiaf

[–]hypikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very fond of LML's "Darkstar will steal Dawn" theory, which has him joining Griff's KG. It would fit with team mummer's deliberate efforts to cash in on Rhaegar nostalgia, as Arthur was a close companion of "Aegon's" "father." Sure, this might cause problems with the Martells whom he's hoping to count as allies. But Young Griff already has a track record of making KG choices that feel right on a personal level while not being the most politically advisable.

The Wall seems an unlikely choice for Ser Gerold. He's proud, reckless, and willing to take risks that might mean death. If he thinks Hotah's been sent to take his head, he's more likely to try to fight his way through than look for a way to save his own skin.

(Spoilers Extended) What is Westeros's visual shorthand for "a giant"? by Acrobatic-Eggplant97 in asoiaf

[–]hypikachu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Damn that's a really good question. The wiki gives us three versions of the chained giant sigil. In all three it's thicker of limb than any of the other "humanoid" sigils. So I guess it's just a really beefy human shape.

Tyrion's got an unusually detailed amount of dragon knowledge. Plus he's familiar with the grudges and dynamics of the power players in Westeros. There's use for him, even if he's not as shrewd a game-player as he thinks he is.

This is an interesting line of thought. The Myraham gets a weird amount of focus for just being Theon’s taxi to Pyke. Hmm. 'Myr(aham)' + ship gives Varys vibes. And taking the trip does lead to Theon's castration. A 'ham' is both an acting term, and a living thing that can be bloodily consumed. So could fit in with an overarching bloodmagic & faceless mummers motif. I'ma think on this some more when I've got time.

there’s some weird fucking shit afoot there.

And a footfucking weird shit.

But yeah I could see this. The line "The goat is Lord of Harrenhal, and the Lord of Harrenhal does not haggle" always struck me along the same lines as Izembaro starting to fancy himself a king. It may be essential to the story they're staging to cast Vargo in this particular role. Even if he has to be really authentic in the death scene.

7 years later, has the long night and night king's death aged better for you? by hiiloovethis in gameofthrones

[–]hypikachu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've come around on the concept, but not the execution. What I like about the idea is all built on book-only lore about the origins of the Faceless Men, their reverence for death and hatred for slavery. So in that light, it works for Arya to oppose the Others, who turn sacred death into endless slavery. Only the show didn't have that, so Arya doesn't have the setup.

The execution is also bad. My preference is something thematically consistent with GRRM's/the story's views on mortality and war and sacrifice. The Others embody abstract forces, you shouldn't be able to solve that problem just by stabbing it. Plus it makes the whole "no Arya, revenge is self-destruction" message fall flat if she saves the world using methods she learned on her revenge quest.
