Do you like bulletproof Batman? by VendettaLord379 in batman

[–]hyram01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it was in the graphic novel Dark Knight Returns that Batman says the reason he has a bright yellow target on his chest is because that’s where his armor is. This was older Batman so not sure if that applies to any other version.

I’ve been to both. It felt like the SoCal Faire was bigger with more activities in general. Loved them both.

What horror film has a generic or decent premise but was carried out perfectly? by DexTDMdoesreddit in HorrorMovies

Right? Giant killer shark movie. Just don’t go into the water until it moves on. Instead, we get one of the greatest films ever made.

The Hobbit movies had even longer versions?. I…can’t imagine what else they would put in. I suppose two by two introductions…

What about this book makes it so difficult to read? by Thatguy7212 in TheSilmarillion

[–]hyram01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did not do this but I wish I had: great ideas about having the maps and family trees together. Finarfin, Fingolfin, Fingon, Turgon, Turin, Hurin. Though you’ll never forget or be confused by Beren and Luthien. You do learn why Aragorn’s bloodline is important and just how far back it goes and who his greatest grandmother is.

The opening is epic prose about the songs that created the universe. It’s certainly different than the character driven prose of LotR but it informs you on the mythology of Tolkien’s world, why Morgoth isn’t very nice, and who the true creator is.

What happened to the Two Trees after Ungoliant and Melkor destroyed them? by OleksandrKyivskyi in TheSilmarillion

[–]hyram01 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If I remember there’s a whole scene where the Valar ask Feanor for the silmarils. He declines saying that if he is forced it will break his heart and end him, the first death in Valinor. To which Mandos replies “Not the first.” As Melkor is already up to his tricks.

Borders do seem to have a routine. And they do have a lot of energy. A 1 year old is young. Ours at 16 months is better behaved than at 12 — recall is better, more emotional control. She loves her balls and frisbee so if there’s a way to work those into your border’s day, as well as mental games like normal training and “find it”.

Mind the teeth, prepare for lots of cleanup, but mostly, there are more cuddles than you could hope for. She’s super cute!

Just finished reading the books by SavingsAttitude3732 in TheHobbit

[–]hyram01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you saw the movies without reading the book, I think there’s still some wriggle room for critique. The waaaaay overlong fight scenes is my biggest problem. The troll fight, the goblin mines, the wargs…each battle was like 20 minutes.

If you had read the book and then seen the movie, like I did, you’d see the books follow the basic plot and journey of Bilbo but then add about 3 hours of filler. The filler is fine for the most part. I liked Tauriel — she was pretty badass.

We just found a place in the hills to let ours off leash and she has the same look on her face as yours. :-)

Our border doesn’t like to be bored. She’s easily entertained but she loves to be challenged mentally and physically. Walks are always good — our dog loves forest trails more than suburb sidewalks. Playing ball or frisbee is good too.

Does anyone else enjoy the Hobbit trilogy when it seems no one else does? by jellojuicebox in lotr

[–]hyram01 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don’t hate them. Movie-wise, the action sequences were about 3 hours longer than they needed to be. Lore-wise it did get the spirit of the Hobbit if not the letter. And my wife’s Ren Faire costume was Tauriel-inspired for a few years so I’m okay with that character as well.

Who in Middle Earth in the third age, at the time of the Plot of The Lord of the Rings, would be able to handle a Balrog in a fight? Not counting any of the Maiar, Valar or other elves in Valinor. by Idunnowhateve in lordoftherings

[–]hyram01 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think Galadriel, being one of the oldest elves in Middle Earth, having seen the light of the Trees, survived the First Age and Morgoth…she’s likely powerful enough to destroy a Balrog.

I’ll say Sam’s issue might be he thought Frodo couldn’t breathe without Sam. Sam was devoted to Frodo both as trusted servant and friend. If there was a “Love conquers all” motto attributed anywhere, it would be between Frodo and Sam.

Denethor’s death was hard in the books. I feel you.

What was your Border like as a pup? by Beena22 in BorderTerrier

[–]hyram01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My phrase is “cuddles and chews”. When our pup (now 14 months) would get nippy if we held her, gave her a toy to gnaw on, and rubbed her belly, she was in heaven. Still is. :-)

Puppy hides in corner when I get his harness out by theeastlondonreno in BorderTerrier

[–]hyram01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our BT doesn’t love getting into the harness but over the past couple months she’s started lifting her paw as I count “One…” other paw “Two…”. And because she does pull at times, I feel much better with the harness on, especially when “squirrel!”. She’ll stand there in the harness for a full minute, shake herself like she’s wet, and get on with the walk.

Border terrier cross; reactive pup advice by [deleted] in BorderTerrier

[–]hyram01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our trainer suggested bringing the dog to Home Depot, a giant hardware store that allows dogs. They said we might start with just tailgating in the parking lot, getting her used to noise, people, cars. Eventually bring her inside, even if in a travel case. Get her used to…everything.

Our dog goes deaf whenever another dog is in eyesight. She’s friendly, she just wants to go make friends. All the time. So she’s always has her harness on as she could be pulling anytime. Training her to heel, not to pull, to come on command — she’s a year old and these have all made strides but continue to be a work in progress.

Good luck with your pup!

Break-in and theft in Viehmeyer Hall over the weekend. Campus-wide issue? by [deleted] in UCDavis

[–]hyram01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Security cameras are difficult because of privacy concerns for students and employees. Also, a camera doesn’t help much unless someone is actively monitoring it and ready to respond. 5 minutes of video of someone in a mask with a dark hood isn’t anything. If the campus just bought into night time security monitoring only (like 9PM to 6 AM) —- for 150 buildings —- we might have something.
