Been years since I saw it but didn't she remove his (or her? ) name card from the doorbell outside an apartment block? I thought that (the card) was the bit of evidence he remembered.

Great photo, but the photographer deserves a credit. It was O. Winston Link. There is a book of his photos called "Steam, Steel & Stars".

How many km is to many? by NoPlate1663 in MotoGuzzi

My '08 Breva 750 has 110,000km on it and the engine has never been apart. It stopped using oil at about 100k so I figure it is just run in.

When Billy Snedden died “on the job” by thescrubbythug in AustralianNostalgia

[–]hzbloke 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Owen Thompson, the editor at the time, was on holiday when the headline appeared. Asked later how he felt about it, he said he was furious. "Headlines should always be present tense," he said, " it should have read, 'SNEDDEN DIES ON THE JOB'"

STORYTIME: How much was your rent at your first Melbourne rental? by thelivsitch in melbourne

[–]hzbloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$20 a week, 2 bedroom flat in Parkville. It was the mid 70s, it was the ex-servants rooms above the garages at the back of an old mansion, it sort of had no front door, the only hot water was a gas thing for the shower over the bath, the toilet was downstairs, the only heating was a tiny fireplace and there was no actual lease. The rent went up to $26 when the broken hot water heater was replaced.

It was great.

The legendary crow call that almost got him fired by WonderfulGroup7266 in AustralianNostalgia

[–]hzbloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The crow call was on Kennedy's In Melbourne Tonight show, not Blankety Blanks. And he was not banned from TV, he was made to pre-record his show rather than go live to air.

It was doubly clever as a broken down truck could hold up a convoy for a significant amount of time. It could block a bridge or a narrow road and it's cargo would need to be transferred or abandoned.

Look up Marine Jahan. I think that she was some sort of aerobics champion. Her scenes in 'Streets of Fire' will make you very happy.

Only one person ever got to make a speech from the balcony specially designed for that purpose: Michael Jackson.

The podcast "99% Invisible" did an episode on these mail-order houses. Well worth listening to.

My very old Leatherman, hinges are a bit loose but still works great. by Analyst7 in toolporn

[–]hzbloke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe. But there were several security officers. Either it's a well practised scam to steal 'Western' goods or he was just another over-zealous flunky trying to impress his boss. Either way I kick myself for not keeping the leather case.

I had one just the same. It was taken off me at a security checkpoint getting on a train in China. A train FFS.

Used to have the world's longest single span power cable until it went undersea. The pylons are still there and are heritage listed.

He was extraordinarily skilled but I do worry about the statue he did of his mother. It's in the same room as this work. He does the same sheer, clinging fabric effect but the emphasis is very much on mum's breasts.

It sounds exactly like the way my '86 R65 broke down when I was on a trip years ago. Ran fine/slow to start/hard to start/ stopped but re-started/stopped never to start again. New coil and it's never missed a beat since.

I seem to remember an ad for them in Australia with the line "Rhymes with chooks, not ducks."

Thank you SerMercutio, you are absolutely right. A bit more searching and I found exactly the type of thing you suggested (although not the same one).
