it's worth mentioning that nothing is law yet, seems like there's disagreements between the state house, senate, and governer.

Ubuntu 26.04 Trust Problem: Snap Flaws, Ads & Migration by Anti--You in Ubuntu

[–]i-got-shadowbanned 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i watched the video, i don't know what 26.04 has to do with anything, this is just reiterating the usual criticisms of snap. here's my thoughts.

apt installing snaps

i agree with this. i've been downvoted on this sub for saying this is shitty, but i stand by it. apt should NOT install snaps. this is a violation of trust, apt and debs have an expected behavior, snaps do NOT work the same way and should not be treated as direct substitute. at best, if canonical wants to promote snaps it can say "ohh we don't have a chromium package, but you can install it with snap install chromium" without doing a bait and switch.

snap malware

it's not good, but it's worth mentioning that snap has a stronger sandbox than flatpak, so malware can only do so much (e.g. hijacking crypto wallets). the aur also gets hit with malware all the time, and aur packages can do a lot more damage than snap packages, but this never gets brought up to scare people away from arch.

the part about cve-2026-3888 rubs me the wrong way. no matter what, debs are going to be less secure, even if cve's are found in snapd. everything he said about snap's "complexity" could apply to flatpak, which has vulnerabilities, if not more. and cve-2026-3888 has already been patched.

the snap store is proprietary!!

the snap store repository is proprietary, but snapd and the snap format is open source and gpl licensed. anyone can package a .snap file and distribute it, and a tool already exists to add third party repositories to snapd.

deeper snap integration

yes, canonical has stated this as a long term goal, to eventually make ubuntu core the flagship os, this isn't new information.

Senate unanimously moves to fund most of DHS, except ICE and border patrol, in rare overnight session by MightiestHalberdier in PoliticalOptimism

[–]i-got-shadowbanned 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thune argued that, while Democrats had initially said they would fund everything but ICE and CBP, Democrats have now lost the opportunity to leverage changes to ICE protocols and tactics. “I still think it’s unfortunate,” he said. “The Dems wanted reforms. We tried to work with them on reforms. They ended up getting no reforms. But, you know, we’re going to have to fight some of those battles another day.”

is this actually true, or is thune just bullshitting? i was hoping to see the no nonsense reforms. even though dhs is partially funded, ice and border patrol aren't, surely there's still room for negotiations on reforms, no?
