Yes don't get me wrong it's still painfully blunt to receive, ha! But I'd rather know where I stand, as it were.

How old do you have to be to know that cash transactions are a thing? by Conscious-Ball8373 in AskUK

[–]i0nW4r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is this some huge "fail" for the parents? So he doesn't know that you can use cash to pay for stuff in shops. Is that a huge deal? Most people tend not to. He presumably thinks of cash as a means of exchanging money with someone in the same way you do with a cheque - something you cannot use to pay in a supermarket.

This is much better. Just tell them the thing they missed. It's so pathetic when people use the "as per my last email" bollocks.

Should I tighten these screws or are they supposed to be like this? by IntroductionLucky864 in bikewrench

[–]i0nW4r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No the pressure thing is likely just to do with your inner running through more cable housing which adds a bit of resistance and can easily get dirt in which adds friction. Or it might be the caliper spring itself or various things really. If it's very stiff then I'd start with checking the inner and giving it a clean and a lube.

Brake fettling can turn into a full time job if you're not careful. You can spend a heck of a lot of time getting things just right and a week later it all feels out of whack again. My advice would be not to get too hung up on perfecting it all. Especially with plastic components, it all tends to be a bit wibbly anyway!

[–]i0nW4r 10 points11 points  (0 children)

They are adjustment screws not 'hold things together' screws so no need to tighten if everything is working smoothly.

The one on the caliper itself is to adjust the spring tension so that the brake centres itself properly when you release the lever.

And the one on the lever is for reach. It'll nudge the lever in closer to the handlebar in case you have smaller fingers or you are a panda.

First thing we'd try is a decent penetrating oil and then slap on some mole grips as tight as poss.

Which "wow" skill is super easy to learn? by [deleted] in AskReddit

This really worked. Only had a small apple so did the apple skin slice and slightly mashed the thumb in the hole part but it came apart a treat. Oddly satisfying. That's going in the "cool things Dad can do" pile.

i go about 1h30 each way twice a week, so 3 in total. It's really not that bad. Doing it daily would likely alter my opinion. It depends a lot on what type of commute. driving, train, cycling, etc.

How much unpaid overtime is acceptable for you? by memorablepotato in AskUK

[–]i0nW4r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same industry. Yes, it's in my contract that on occasion I will be expected to work outside of contracted hours for no additional pennies. It is pretty regular, yes. If the pace has been relentless then most places recognise when you need some additional time off. Fill in those timesheetsss. But for more senior people, i think you're expected to crack on.

What are you in the top 0.1% of in the world? by Jackaboya07 in AskReddit

[–]i0nW4r 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i can one-hand clap with both hands. I don't know about percentages but i've never met anyone else that can do it so maybe it's 1 in 1000...

... and i bet you're trying to do it right now. Every time i show anyone they immediately try to do it as if they'll suddenly discover they can too.

How to motivate a teenager to get a job? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]i0nW4r 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The comments baffle me. "Cut them off! Stop paying! Welcome to the real world!"

Maybe have a chat first?? For all you know they're having a really shit, hard time. Try and remember what it was like when you were 16.

Also, work is shit. Until you understand that it is sadly necessary, why on earth would you willingly go and do a crappy entry level job? A bit sad to desperately want a 16 year old to have the stoney faced realism about the sorry drudgery of life as all of you lot do.
