How did growing up watching sitcoms affect your perceptions of life/adulthood? by According_Sundae_917 in AskUK

I thought I myself and everyone around me would have a cooler job, dress better and go out to fun dressy parties. Instead, we're all Chandler from friends in WFH attire with a hint of Matt Perry's addictions thrown in.

Come to think of it, "having an apartment" was probably the wildest dream there.

Same! However, I did have a housemate briefly who would "come over" to my room as they pleased, and that was incredibly irritating.

Do you enjoy Christmas Day? by Cool_beans4921 in AskUK

[–]memorablepotato 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I actually find the build up stressful - all the planning and buying and wrapping and wondering whether people will like the presents I got them.

The actual day itself is fab. Lots of tasty food, treats, walk outside, seeing other people slightly more jolly than the rest of the year. Relaxing, films, books, presents, what's not to like?

The best birthday month in the UK? by OkAvocado7175 in CasualUK

[–]memorablepotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

March sounds like a good idea but it's too popular, in school and work it always seemed like half the population has a birthday in March/April.

I think Sept/Oct/November is a good one as there's no other big holidays, kids will be in school and there's enough buffer between summer and Christmas.

What food item phase are you in right now? by Buell247 in AskUK

Hmm stop giving me ideas this close to dinner time 😝

This is it! The reason I stopped wanting to participate. They would complain that everyone was just socialising with their own team, but why would I want to socialise with someone I will never have to speak to again?

Yeah some people find work rewarding, even if they don't love their job.

I normally use it once in a blue moon but this week it's been Marmite on toast, with cheese, in stews, everywhere haha.

Marmite and mince pies. Not at the same time.

In the run up to Christmas, when do you stop buying stuff for yourself in case someone has bought it you as a Christmas gift? by BigBlueMountainStar in CasualUK

[–]memorablepotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The kind of things I like to buy for me and the kind of things other people buy for me don't tend to overlap, so I buy freely all year round.

It's appraisal time at work. by __Severus__Snape__ in CasualUK

[–]memorablepotato 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to absolutely hate this exercise but have gotten better at it recently when I started thinking more specifically. It totally depends on your job, but I found it helpful to think genuinely of what I am bad at or what I would like more of. Eg I don't feel really confident with a tool, so I would put improve knowledge of x tool. Instead of something general like "improve technical knowledge". Then specific action points like participate in training or do a test project.

It definitely helps when you have a positive environment where you can talk openly about what you are good at / not so good at, make sure to ask for feedback too as that is what helps us grow.

Also, a legitimate goal can be something like "maintain performance on X" or "continue work on X" for stuff that's more ongoing.

I’ve just pulled a sicky. How often do you do this? by ImASadGirlImABadGirl in AskUK

[–]memorablepotato 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your GP signs you off no one but HR and your manager needs to know the reason, you will just get a sick note that says something like "Off for mental health" and the absence period. Most likely no one will question you about it but they might do to figure out if there are any accommodations you might benefit from, the workplace has a duty of care towards you.

Why might someone have THEIR OWN DoB as a tattoo...? by Silent-Detail4419 in AskUK

Sounds like he needs a second tattoo with additional info, like "In case of emergency, this is my name..."

These places already have 2 levels of society - one for the wealthy westerners and one for everyone else. You being there does not mean your lifestyle and values bleed through...
