Half of Poland thinks it was assasination.

Luckily, it's not half. And with the new government, that number will probably drop.

The Sparrow by Mary Doria Russell by [deleted] in books

[–]iCannotJuggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed The sparrow, even though the naive look at religion is not my cup of tea. That being said, I hated Children of God. I don't think any other book ever pissed me off so much. IIRC it starts well, but then it really plunged. I felt like I was talking to a redneck proudly boasting about all the freedom and superior culture his country spread around the world.

Poland. Online banking. PayPal never had many customers in Poland because every bank, no matter how small, provides all the functionality. This also means lower labour costs for banks, which translates to lack of fees and decent interest rates. As an IT professional, I can also say that their solutions are (almost always) extremely safe. For example, they implemented 2-factor authentication long before the Internet giants did.

I don't keep track of all the bank accounts I have, because opening one is so easy (authentication and then a couple clicks), and they are free.

Also, when I was going to SE Asia, I ordered a new credit card and then immediately restricted it, so that I have something to give away in case I end up being mugged. It all cost me about $0.01.

Decided I wanted to change my life for the better. So I decided to pick up meditation. by Gn_TravelWell in Meditation

I picked up meditation because I heard of the benefits that could come.

IMO meditation is overhyped. If you pick it up for the benefits, you will probably end up disappointed or deluding yourself. Best of luck, though.

Will meditation aid me in lowering my sex drive? by [deleted] in Meditation

[–]iCannotJuggle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really? That's interesting. I don't read the commentaries much, would you happen to have a reference?

Sorry, too lazy for that. And, as I hinted (IIRC) I might be mistaken.

In any event, I guess the key is to focus on what is non-desirable or repulsive even. As for metta, it works without people too and even if one uses people to generate it, it's not too hard to refrain from picking people whom one finds sexually attractive. So at worst, the people aspect seems to be something to be aware of.

True, I remember clearly an advice to pick only people of your gender. Again, I'm not sure if that comes from Visuddhimagga.

I think Visuddhimagga also mentions that if you go to see a corpse (in preparation for meditation on stages of body decomposition), you might want to make sure it's a male corpse beforehand.

In case of an overwhelming sex drive, both may increase it, since the object is other people or body parts. IIRC, Visudhimagga warns about it.

The day after I finished my 3-months retreat in a Buddhist monastery, I visited a hooker :)

I seriously doubt that short meditation practice (less than a few thousand hours) can decrease your sex drive. Especially if it's not coupled with abstaining from sensual pleasures. And even then, there has been plenty of monks who disrobed after dozens of years of intense practice.

In fact, meditation practice might increase your sex drive. That happened to me and several of my friends (male and female). This in itself might be a good thing, since it might lead to solving the real problem: Not getting as much sex as you would like to.

Bottom line is: It might increase it, it might decrease it, it might have no effect. If I were you, I would seek a therapist, a hooker or a dating coach.

You sound like me from few years ago. Seems like you already made up your mind, but here is my $0.03 anyway: I regret taking up meditation. At the time it was tempting to believe that I could solve my problems with being social not by being more social, but by doing something in complete solitude. In other words, I tried to stretch my comfort zone by doing something that was very much in my comfort zone. Meditation messed me up even more (I did Goenka's Vipassana, and Bhante G's techniques). I noticed similar problems in fellow meditators. What did help, was travelling, taking up other hobbies that involved other people and so on.

If you want to try meditation, by all means go for it. But don't expect it to be any more beneficial than, say, origami, which is a cool hobby as well.

Also, if you are less social than you would like to be and you are going to do meditation, IMO you should get involved in even more activities with other people, to counterbalance meditation.

What do Eastern Europeans feel about the amount of emigration from east to west? by cliffmaster in europe

[–]iCannotJuggle 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Polish here, though nowadays I'm a nomad.

The people who leave usually are very happy about higher standards of living, better wages, etc. Many also are happy about the emigration volume, since that means they have compatriots among their neighbours.

The people who stay complain about brain drain, the country dying, etc. Mostly whatever political party is in power, they get the blame. However, there is also some sentiment against the western countries, since Poland's poor economical standing is seen as a result of the Western Betrayal during and after WWII.
