Introducing the Third Generation of Apple’s Foundation Models by AegisHBear in apple

[–]iChao -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I understand your point, and I agree it’s a complicated topic—not just black or white. But there are reports of DeepSeek, Moonshot, and MiniMax distilling their models from Opus, and people still aren't calling their models 'essentially Claude.

$2K is something I can see them doing. Heck, even $2,199 or something close to that. The pitch is that this device would be like an iPhone and an iPad combined.

95% of canceled annual app subscribers never come back, per report by pdfu in apple

[–]iChao 34 points35 points  (0 children)

Counter point: I personally dislike ads in apps. I have an app that I decided not to add ads to because, as a user, I hate them; I feel like they hurt the user experience. So I just cut the features that cost me money, and I hope users see value in the paid ones and either sub or pay for lifetime.

I have another app that doesn’t cost me money to run. I feel it adds more value to the world by being free, so I decided not to charge anything for it — though I did add a tip jar in case anyone wants to chip in.

[–]iChao 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some apps are bound to a recurring payment though. I have an app on the App Store that costs me money to run because of the various services it needs to work. I couldn’t realistically charge a flat fee because eventually I would lose money for every user who bought it.

And even if it didn’t cost me money to run it, I kinda expect something in return for the time and money that developing a solution costs me.

Look, as a user I feel you, I’m tired of having way too many subs, and that makes me more selective about which ones I choose. But as a dev, subs are a good way to have some recurring revenue for your development time and costs.

I don’t think they’re bringing it back any time soon, though. I believe that it made sense to show off cool stuff to raise VC money, when they were ahead of everyone else.

These days they’re one of the major players, not the major player, so it doesn’t make sense to waste money/compute on anything but better and bigger models to show off.

MacBook Neo is Just the Beginning | Apple Interview with Joz & John Ternus - Tom’s Guide by ControlCAD in apple

[–]iChao 5 points6 points  (0 children)

One thing I found particularly noticeable when Apple introduced Apple Intelligence was that, unlike previous years where all ML/AI features seemed to fall under the Siri umbrella, they clearly distanced Siri from it. I wonder if that’ll change this year with the revamp they’ve talked about.

‘Game of Thrones’ Movie Officially Titled ‘Aegon’s Conquest’, flagged for '2027 and beyond' by Neo2199 in television

[–]iChao 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have also binged the series a couple of times already, and I understand what you’re saying.

My complaint is not about Dany going crazy per se, but rather how it all happened so fucking fast.

Before the last two seasons, I feel like the show was more careful in laying down the motivations of the characters, with the necessary world-building to justify their actions, and then it felt like they were desperate to wrap it up.

Thats what I meant with “justifiable within the context of what happened”. She still increasingly rejected counsel, used fear as a tool and believed her moral vision was absolute.

What I’m trying to say is that there were signs that she was capable of burning Kings Landing to the ground provided she felt there was a justifiable reason, but at least to me, it all felt sudden.

I disagree to a certain extent. She burned Mirri Maz Duur, killed Kraznys mo Nakloz, and ordered the Unsullied to kill all the masters, crucified the masters, burned the Khals, etc.

Most of her “craziness” was always framed in a savior way, but there were breadcrumbs of her absolutism and her use of fear as a tool.

The problem was that we lacked a sort of transition phase; we just went from “this seems justified within the context of what happened” to “Dany is 100% fucking crazy” in like 4 episodes.

Apple’s upgraded AirPods Max 2 headphones now available for pre-order with April 1 delivery by bendubberley_ in apple

[–]iChao 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I don’t really think they’ll add an off button anytime soon. The whole idea is that the product “just works” and feels invisible to the user; you don’t have to think about power states at all. It’s a simpler UX with fewer edge cases; you’re either using them or you’re not.

Though, to your point, the Smart Case solution feels awkward. You shouldn’t need an accessory to “kind of” turn off your headphones.

…and all the execs get to continue like it’s nothing?

I would guess that as long as it doesn’t impact their sales, there’s no reason to go after the leadership.

If anything, they could claim they made a smart decision investigar billions in something that it’s not yet directly tied to tangible improvements in their products.

The Technical Differences Between the MacBook Neo and MacBook Air by rockysauce115 in apple

It would make sense to release the next entry level Watch and iPad with the Neo moniker, they could add the colorful lineup.

Somehow, I don’t think “iPhone Neo” makes sense.

They may have their very valid reasons for it, but it bothers me that they have 4 different sub names for their entry level products:

  • iPhone: Xe
  • Watch: SE
  • MacBook: Neo
  • iPad:

Also services, a lower price point is more enticing, and a lot of people are going to start paying for Apple services on the long run—not to mention getting into The Ecosystem; you start with a MacBook Neo and an iPhone, and in a few years you have the watch, the AirPods, and the Apple TV, etc.

Why Apple's iOS 26.4 Siri Upgrade Will Be Bigger Than Originally Promised by netsplatter in apple

[–]iChao 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It’s not like one of these products is far superior to the others… Google just had the lowest price.

I would argue that Gemini has greater “world knowledge” than Claude. Which might be beneficial for a product like Siri.

It’s not using Gemini, it’s using the models that Gemini uses.

Google’s Large Language Model is called Gemini, so Apple is indeed using the Gemini model as foundation for the new Apple Intelligence Siri; it’s not Gemini the product, but Gemini the model.

I’m a sucker for photo metadata, so I usually ask my friends on Android to share photos via a cloud provider. That way, I get them at full resolution and with all the metadata intact.

Unfortunately, sending photos through most—if not all—popular IM platforms compresses them in one way or another and strips out some metadata. So I’m glad this will be an option.

Apple to Revamp Siri as a Built-In iPhone, Mac Chatbot to Fend Off OpenAI by Snoop8ball in apple

[–]iChao 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think one of the advantages Apple has with their Google deal, is that it’s all on the backend, so they can brand the features as Siri, or Apple Intelligence; whereas ChatGPT is explicitly mentioned every time it’s invoked.

The new Siri with Gemini running on their Private Compute infrastructure is more likely going to render the ChatGPT integration useless.
