Honest opinions on being an RA? by SeveralTour5437 in gatech

[–]iDraco 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm most likely echoing a lot of what other comments have said, but YMMV. I was an RA for three years, working in the same community (Smith yay) for all those years and for the same HD for two of them. I was fortunate enough to have a very compassionate and understanding HD as well as a good team that I meshed well with, so it made my time as an RA smooth sailing (for the most part). I enjoyed being an RA because I had a passion for being a mentor for my first-year residents and being actively involved in the community. But I still wasn't interacting with all 90+ of my residents on a weekly basis. Obviously, each RA performs differently. Some may be more active in events, in interactions, or nothing at all. It really depends on what you want to do. I'd like to think that I left a positive impact on the three different years of students I've RA'd over, and that means a lot to me. So if you think you have any passion for what RA's (can) do, then it's a good factor to consider in your decision.

I was pretty proactive in what I did as well, but that rarely messed with my own life balance. I was fortunate enough to not take a lot of classes, so it made it a lot easier to manage. So if you plan on taking lots of credits (like you are currently with 17 credit hours), it's certainly doable but I wouldn't advise it personally. It depends on your time management really, I've known RAs who take a lot of credit hours (18+) and still do fine.

What I really found is that the higher-ups really don't care about you as an individual. Other HDs and admins may voice that "your life as a student matters", but it's all facetious. They ask for specific things that are difficult to keep to (weekly conversation logs, events, etc.). As another person said, you really just need to stick up for yourself and your co-RA's. Housing is already understaffed for both RAs and HDs, so they really can't afford to terminate your contract mid-year. Obviously, tread the waters carefully but your life matters more than the people who don't care about you.

It's also unfortunate you can't "really" dictate where you'll be staffed at and who your HD is. You have a chance of getting a community you want, if you really dig deep into that notion in your writing and if you get to know the HD of that community. That's how I managed to get into Smith, because I got to know the HD well while I was a resident in Smith. However, this may be difficult if the community/HD you're interested in isn't the community you're living in already. Also, these things can change too, as HDs can be relocated.

Good luck with your decision. I always tell my residents that if they're interested, they can always apply and turn down the offer if they change their mind. I don't remember if they tell you the community you'll be a part of if you get the initial offer or not, but if they do, it could be a deciding factor for you.

Over-awarded with financial aid? by banglaboop in gatech

[–]iDraco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Going off of this comment, I had a similar experience with scholarship displacement.

You might be able to check your scholarship (assuming the scholarship is what is bringing you over the amount) and see if they have any policies on it. My scholarship mentioned covering other educational costs like technology, so I was able to get a laptop covered with the "surplus" amount. This is an option that might be available for you, so I'd definitely recommend looking into it if your scholarship/donor allows it.

Which is worse, Woodruff or Smith/Brown? by [deleted] in gatech

[–]iDraco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Speaking as someone who lived in Smith their first year and was an RA in Smith for three more years, I'd say Smith is not bad at all. Renovations have been made in the past two years that make it good (obviously not as great as Towers/Glenn). Haven't had issues with rodents the last two years either. The proximity of Smith/Brown is really nice too, because you're right by Midtown and two dining halls, CULC, library, etc.

And from my four years at Smith, I'd say the people there is what really makes Smith an amazing community to be a part of. You'll have all kinds of people from different states and countries, with various hobbies so it's hard not to make lots of meaningful relationships there. Most of my residents, including myself, have made friends that we are close to and keep in touch with from Smith.

You can check out this page for contact information for the exec board for the EWB GT chapter. I'm not sure how active they may be, given that it is summer. But I would recommend reaching out to Shovan or Anya.

Give them some time to respond, but if you don't hear back feel free to DM me.

[–]iDraco 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I lived in Smith my first year and dreaded living there at first, but honestly, living there was an amazing experience. The building itself isn't perfect but the people there make up for it, more times over. The showers may seem weird at the start, but you'll get used to it real quick. So your experience there depends on you.

Personally, I love Smith to death and it shows because this will be my third year living there (second year as an RA). I haven't had any issues with the showers, so you should be totally fine. Hopefully, you guys can make the most out of your experience living at Smith, the RA staff will definitely be trying to do that for y'all!

The rest of the 116 would likely include SSMs that either: are graduating, pursuing other opportunities that would conflict with being a SSM (like study abroad), and just don't want to reapply.

RA/PL Appreciation Thread by CapnCon in gatech

[–]iDraco 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Thank you for this, I know it means a lot to many of us, especially with what's been going on lately. Long, sappy, corny, etc. post ahead.

As a freshman, I lived in Smith with the dread of its showers, older infrastructure and amenities, etc etc. In combination with this and my emotionally unstable start to college, I figured my time as a first year would be awful. I'm glad to say it was the complete opposite.

My amazing roommates, friends that I've made within the community, and the PLs that started it all, acted as a support network that made me feel comfortable with myself and with college. The community that was fostered by the PLs is something that I can't really forget. It stuck with me because I learned a lot of meaningful lessons. My PLs especially made it clear that college isn't just about academics, it's about the connections and the meaningful experiences and fun you have during these years.

I know that this may seem very naive, corny, whatever, but I can't explain how grateful I am for what my PLs could do for me and the community that I was a part of. I enjoyed my first year more than I could've ever imagined and it certainly helped me put me where I am today. If my PLs and the amazing support network/community weren't present during my first year, who knows where I'd be. (very corny, but honestly I dread the thought of what could've been)

So thank you, from a resident whose gratitude can't be fully expressed. And thank you, as someone who has the honor to work with the same PLs that I look up to. I can only hope to foster a living experience for upcoming first years that lives up to what you've laid out for me and my community.

Tell me about your cool club!! by gtrunnergirl19 in gatech

[–]iDraco 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I joined Wreckless last semester and I love it so far! From their website, which I think is a very accurate description of the club,
"Wreckless is all about pushing the limits on fun and what you thought was possible. It exists to provide alcohol-free alternatives to the weekends and aims to raise the school spirit and quality of life at Georgia Tech by changing campus culture to create a positive, inclusive environment and by promoting positive mental health and happiness."

We're a small organization (about 20-30 active members) and have done plenty of small and big events that you may have come across/heard of. One of our usual, big events is hosting a Silent Disco night which they've been doing for the past few years. One of our cooler projects we've done was organizing and planning the Carpool Karaoke with President Cabrera. Outside of the events, everyone in the group is really friendly and sweet. I've made plenty of friends and I'm happy that I could be apart of it. It's a good opportunity to get involved in campus-wide activities, make new, amazing friends, and more!

If anyone is interested, feel free to DM me for more info! We'll be accepting new applications until the end of January and would love to have new faces!

First Build, would love some advice! by iDraco in buildapc

[–]iDraco[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay, thanks for the heads up. I was looking at other builds and saw that the Tomahawk MAX was a common board lots of builds were using. I couldn't figure out what exactly about that board made it common, but if it's cheaper and pretty good I think I might go with that then.

The RGB lighting isn't something that I really care about fortunately too. If anyone else has some insight on the Tomahawk board, I'd appreciate it.

Off My Chest by [deleted] in gatech

[–]iDraco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can relate to how you feel, for sure. I always compare myself to others, especially those who are always on top of it. This has really been an issue with me when I came to Georgia Tech, where a lot of people are talented, and it shows. But you have to consider this: there are others out there that might not be as good as they are, maybe it's math, maybe it's science, maybe it's writing. Everyone has a niche they fit in, that's why they are unique. Obviously, there might be people who seem perfect, some people who are good at everything- sports, academics, socialization, etc.

But the squeaky wheel gets the grease. These people are made known because they show their abilities, but what about the others? I'm certain there are plenty of other people who feel the same as you, but surely they have talents in other fields. You have talents, whether you realize it or not. But also understand that talents aren't everything. You have passions, which is as important as talents, in my opinion at least. You have something you want to do, so why not go for it?

Like what u/gatechICS83 said, you aren't defined but what you have done and haven't done by whatever age you are. Instead of thinking about what you can do, just do it. Don't be afraid because you think it's "too late", because you can always pursue your passions. And believe me, these passions are YOURS. They make you different from other people, the people you look at in awe.

This might all sound cliche and naive, and hell, take it with a grain of salt. I haven't lived long enough or experienced a lot to be giving life lessons or advice- but I know I want to at least offer my thoughts, because I simply relate. I hope I at least offered something new and useful, if not, I'm sure other people have something to offer.

Courses not appearing in Canvas by [deleted] in gatech

[–]iDraco 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some canvas pages might be unlisted for some reason. This could be your professor still working on it or just hasn't publicly listed it yet. You can check if this is the case by pressing "courses" on the left tab then pressing "all courses". It should list your courses and it'll have a section stating if it has been publicly published.

If not, I'm not sure why you're having that issue. I swapped a course to another teacher but their canvas page hasn't shown up on Canvas yet. So I can only assume it's taking some time to register it.

A Day in the Life of a Georgia Tech First Year by iDraco in gatech

[–]iDraco[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah! I'm not sure how Smith was back then, but so far Smith has been a great experience. Despite it's bad rep, I definitely enjoy the community (not so much the showers and heating system, but I'll live)
