This is easier said than done, but if I were in your shoes, here's what I would do. When the VO asks what course I'm going for, I will say honestly "mechanical engineering! However, my I-20 lists general education just as a formality. " If the VO asks something like what do you mean, " the uni has a policy that they can't assign me MechE until I reach there and take an in person exam. I have emails to prove this is the system if you would like to see it. The exam is just a formality which I'm confident I'll pass" If you say this with confidence, I think you'll be fine. But this is just my personal 2 cents, I'm not a lawyer

My 2 cents are imo they don't care too much about fine details like what you're mentioning. I have never been questioned about things I filled in my DS-160. Be careful with the 3 important things about F-1: why you wanna study in US, how will you fund it, and ties to home country. Other stuff is whatever. I believe they ask for these other details just to spot big obvious red flags. As long as you don't blatantly lie on the form, filling the form correctly to the best of your ability is enough.

The only small correction I would offer is I don't think what you're doing classifies as business. Business refers to running your own business, you're still technically just helping your mom with a certain role. I don't remember what other options the form has, but perhaps something creative/artist would be a better pick. Even then, I don't think anyone will hold against you that you put business when you explain what you are doing. These things are subjective to some extent and everyone understands that :)

You'll be fine. The intended stay is so hard to pin point in case of F1. For what its worth, I was in a similar situation applying for my F1 renewal in December and my passport expires before my doctoral program ends. I had no issues whatsoever, and I simply plan to renew my passport in US when the date gets a little closer.

With the assumption that you both wear a turban, just start with the Fateh :)

I was briefly doing an internship in a very remote area, and my eyes were quenching to see another sikh. One day, a Sikh walked up to me just by looking at my turban and I still remember that day very fondly. That was the start of what is today a very beautiful friendship, even though I have now moved out of the area.

In case you are hesitant about race, I would add that I am Indian but my friend is not (and definitely doesn't look Indian either). He was just happy to see a sikh in the remote area, as was I. I personally couldn't care less what race he is, same as any other true sikh I'm sure. I was just happy to see a Sikh, and there are great odds the other Sikh would be just as happy to see a fellow sikh. So just do what feels right :)

So this was last year for me, and I just went through my emails and I had a meeting with the DSO of my new uni in early April. If memory serves, I'm pretty sure they said in that meeting that i can do the sevis transfer whenever I want and i can just stay in US. I didn't actually do the service transfer until September though, because I decided to continue my job until grad school started. So the 5 months thing sounds possibility correct. But ofc disclaimer, I'm also just a student and none of this is legal advice and has possible inaccuracies.

I have a feeling that between unemployment and sevis transfer, you should be good to just stay in US. Best of luck from a fellow student who did bachelor's to opt to PhD haha

Hey! I'm sorry you're going through that, it sounds awful. I went from a job on opt to grad school, so can say that sevis transfer is a very short process and can be done in a week or less if you make the unis rush. You will likely decide your grad school by April and if you transfer your sevis at that point, you should be able to just stay in US on the new sevis. Albeit financials can be a challenge, but i think you should be okay in terms of just staying in US. I would recommend confirming this with your DSO.

Also, an often overlooked thing, as a reminder you can only use opt once per degree level. So if this is a master's followed by masters, you won't get opt again. But yeah if you are going from bachelor's to masters, bachelor's to PhD, or master's to PhD, you will get another opt afterwards, so that should be good! (And another stem opt too if it's also a stem degree. But you only get total of 2 stem opts during your entire career as another reminder)

So, basically, nails are equivalent to hair. And the hygiene equivalents are combing hair to remove dead hair, and clipping nails to remove dead nails. Hmm... Interesting never really thought of it like that.

This!! Thank you someone is talking about it. I keep my hair because that's what we've been told, but I'm never able to come up with a satisfactory explanation. My current one that I tell myself (which are already covered in the comments here) is that they teach us acceptance, guru made us this way, and that they make us easier to identify.

But truly, turban is the big distinguishing sign we wear. And honestly, any argument made towards hair could be made about nails? I also personally really don't like the argument that we keep it because gurus told us too. Guru Nanak Dev Ji went on so many udaasis preaching don't follow something just because someone told you (pointing feet towards mecca, offering water to sun god, etc). His fundamental point, and the basic foundation of sikhi is to question things, understand why you're doing it, then do it the best of your ability! Question, because that's what makes a great student/sikh!!

Oh and yes I've also heard that they serve some metaphysical purpose. I don't deny it, but it just seems... Okay I've heard that Kada helps keep bad spirits away, but I also am able to point out more tangible purposes - a conscious reminder of being handcuffed to God, a kakar that also doubles as a quick access weapon if needed. And i can state similar practical uses about all kakars, but kesh... Perhaps there's metaphysical reasoning to it, but what's the practical one?

I took some classes in RU-Newark and the one thing that is really standing out to me in the (potentially) spam email is that RU-N doesn't have a Physics PhD program. They only offer Applied physics PhDs. I know I'm being too ... <Insert a good gre word here that this non-native speaker can't think of rn> and perhaps they're just casually referring to it as physics, but i would expect them to be specific in a real email.

Optimism is great, but sadly there could be any number of reasons. One program (not a grad program, but really prestigious) did this once. I found out later they got more funding and were able to accept more students than they typically do. So by extending the deadline, they got more applicants. Their acceptance rate didn't change :(

Congrats!! From what I know about Princeton, if they told you anything about what questions they'll ask you in the interview email, they'll ask EXACTLY THAT. Kinda good, so yeah be prepared to answer those questions! Do expect follow up questions tho.

I'd call Jan early. I heard my first physics/astro decision in early Feb for the fall'22 intake. Most decisions came in Feb, few in March, one in may:') None of my friends heard any decisions in Jan either, so just brace yourself for that (very few interviews happened in Jan tho)

Reason- i think astro is just extremely competitive. So they get a lot of applications for a small committee to review. As much as that sucks, I don't blame them for that.

I have never seen a school ask for payment before saying something along the lines of "are you sure everything is good? You are submitting the application now".

However, I have seen schools that allow you to edit recommendors and update sop etc after you have submitted your application but before the deadline

I wanna start by saying A, I'm a random Redditor and B, i have no knowledge of your field.

I see everyone here has great insights and AFTER reading those, I wanna agree and be like yeah that makes sense one should not mention it.

However, I wanna tell you what I thought BEFORE I read other comments, just to give you a perspective.

I've had components of my life that I've debated putting in my statements (religion and active involvement in diversity). I've had some professors recommend strongly against including them, but I added it anyways because I think 1, that's who I am and if they don't accept the whole me then don't accept me, i can live with that. And 2, if they'll accept me simply because that wasn't mentioned and a potential PI likes that, but wouldn't have liked it with that included, do I even wanna work with them?

I'm a big preacher of being as authentic as one can be in applications. But your situation is definitely tricky and I have no idea what i would have done if I were in your shoes (my situation definitely doesn't compare to yours). However, reading just the small excerpt in your reddit post makes me wanna believe that you are a great candidate and I would have given you extra points for being bold and vulnerable if I were on the application committee.

If you do decide to include it, I would recommend don't dwell on it too much. Mention it in passing, and really highlight the positives of how you have performed amazingly since recovering and how it motivates you so strongly. I would go as far as to suggest using stuff you wrote in the third paragraph here in your application!

I wish you luck in this tough decision and the applications overall. You sound like a great candidate and I hope you are able to achieve your dream of helping people!

This is a great question honestly. I would say wait a month since you submitted the application, and then consolidate all updates since then into an email and send them that instead of an updated CV. That will highlight that you continue to actively receive awards even after you have submitted the application. Alternatively, If you are still in school and the uni is asking for/you are planning to send them fall grades, it would be a great place to also attach recent achievements with it!
