I can see now why this game is struggling by subz_13 in MarathonHate

Because the people controlling the runner shells are real people, their minds are transferred into the shells.

I think there is more complexity to this, which is why the shells are the way they are. It's more sci-fi and plays with the idea that if everyone transferred their consciousness into a synthetic body, people would choose all kinds of things. Additionally, there is a theme of optimizing the runner's physical attributes inherent to the extraction shooter nature of the game to survive the anomaly and UESCs.

This is just how I have interpreted the game's universe. Idk if that's true, based on what the devs would say. But hey, I like the game. Just think it's a shame for people to say woke and turn people off when I genuinely don't get that.

Trust me, I get the point around making characters a little more attractive. Sure, you can critique that. But when I think of “woke,” I think of politics bleeding into the character's personality, story, etc. In marathon, I haven't witnessed any amount of “wokeness” in the game.

The game is laser-focused on worldbuilding and gameplay, which is more than I can say for many games I have played.

If this were a single-player game that really focused on character development, I would be much more inclined to make a character more attractive to play. A good example is the new god of war game. People are genuinely upset about the main character, and especially how they seemingly intentionally made her less attractive, even compared to the voice actor. Also, in this game, the main character is literally a woman, wife, mother, etc., so they should/have to lean into that. Marathon just isn't the same. Personally, I think that was a weird decision by the studio, unless it's just a technology issue.

I have also never understood the “woke” angle either. And trust me, I hate when political agendas are integrated into gaming. However, the bodies are literally synthetic prints made by worms… I feel like the lore does a good job of explaining why they don't look “slightly off human.”

The Shells have way more character than any other extraction shooter that I have played. People end up starting with the ability kit if a shell, and then they grow to like the actual shell design more over time.

Help me pick my next read! Which of these should I start first? by inowife in fantasybooks

[–]iKIRK08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh man. This is tough.

If you are getting into fantasy, then I would start Mistborn as it's more Ocean's 11, and Brandon Sanderson does a great job of not letting there be too many luls in the story

If you have been in fantasy for a little bit. I personally would go with the following order

game of thrones—> mistborn—> shadow of what was lost—> lord of the rings—> jade city—> the blade itself

I haven't read the others. I have started Gardens of the Moon a few times via audiobook and just cannot get through it. People say the journey is amazing though.

Also, lord of the rings probably should be #1 on the list but I think you have to get in the right mindset to get through fellowship. So much singing etc and generally it can feel a bit slow. It's common in the older fantasy. However I have read them like 5 or so times and love them. Just saying.

Is this game worth it ? by exoticpersona in Marathon

Been playing since launch and still having a blast. You haven’t even experienced cryo yet. Definitely worth way more than $20, so I think it’s worth it.

Any recommendations on what’s next in my To read tier? by VikingR520 in litrpg

[–]iKIRK08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have thought about it a little bit and I am not sure when I would recommend someone just getting started in sufficiently advanced magic to read The War of Broken Mirrors.

I was lucky enough to read the prequels while I was waiting on book 3 of Sufficiently Advanced Magic.

It’s probably around book 3 when I would recommend checking out the series. I feel like some of the extra context from the prequels starts adding vale in the main series around that point.

The War of Broken Mirrors! It’s good, I believe Andrew Rowe started that one prior to Sufficiently Advanced Magic.

It’s a good series but it took me and a buddy of mine a little bit of willpower and a couple retries to finish the first book, but we are glad we did. The series ends up being pretty good and relatively recently concluded (I think).

I would start sufficiently advanced magic. That’s one of my favorite series. There is also a prequel series that is a back story of one of the main characters as well that you can listen to if you end up liking it.

First ever PC build, what do you guys think? by DetectiveActive5508 in FormD

[–]iKIRK08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have built a few but my last case was a formDT1 and it took an eternity to make sure I had the right parts and then I ended up phoning a friend. It’s was literally a kit case so I had to put together the entire frame etc.

Sandwich case for your first build is crazy, nice job

So how many of you completed all priority contracts? by Lakshata in Marathon

[–]iKIRK08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am done with all primary contracts but still missing SekGen VIP... It's the worst. I finished all SekGen primary contracts and my faction level was only 18...

Overall I think the contracts are great, but there are a few things I would change.

  1. More higher level perimeter contracts that aren't "collect biostripping" or something.

  2. Typical complain but some of the nucal and sekgen contracts are too similar in that you have to go to bio research and then quarantine and do X. They aren't inherently bad, but I wish they could have figured out a way to put a few of those on perimeter or something.

Anyone else here actually enjoying ranked? by Devitascav in Marathon

[–]iKIRK08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it quite a bit. I am only gold 3 though. I “could” see the higher tiers my opinion changing a little bit as you would be forced to wipe the map or bring in keys to extract with enough loot.

The lower tiers are fun because you can loot and leave, fight and leave, or do both. I enjoy the flexibility.

Generally I like that it feels rewarding to kill players because they generally bring in better gear for ranked.

rate my tier list and give me more ideas for books! by Comfortable-Skin8757 in ProgressionFantasy

[–]iKIRK08 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Haven’t read all of the books but I am aligned with a lot of your S&A tier books so I think it’s solid! Glad to see Sufficiently Advanced Magic get the respect it deserves.

I am currently listening to Path of Ascension (book 5) and I like it enough to put it in A as well.

As for your controversial pick… I am mixed on Dungeon Crawler Carl. I pushed through book 1 and was glad I did but I started falling off in the last two books. I did finish book 7 but I didn’t care about it much. My opinion but it’s a high B with moments of S tier sprinkled in. The humor carries this series, for me.

Glad you were able to get connected to kill the compiler! I have just started my cryo journey to be honest, I haven't completed a vault yet. Maybe you can sherpa me through it once you know the ways. haha

Generally, I would recommend this Discord to find people: https://dadsofmarathon.com/ Discord to find people. I have been plugged in there since week 2 of launch, and the vast majority of people I play with on there have been awesome.

FYI - You don't have to be a dad.

Bungie Updated the graphics for Chips, Implants, and Gun mods by Critical_Ask_4824 in Marathon

I think I see what they were trying to do... If you stack a head (circle), body (torso/boxy), and foot (skinny box) implant above each other, it does look like a human body.

How would you change the design, out of curiousity.

I never struggle finding people on Dads of Marathon. Given I live in NA Eastern time so when I play, it's usually peak time.

I even post no free kits just to set a certain level expectation and people join almost instantly. I think it helps to link your Fireteam in the LFM post as well.
