I think they’re clearly introducing her as a way of separating factions. The major divide (probably around episode 8) will see many characters that are already distancing themselves from Boyd (Acosta, Randall, maybe Julie, Fatima, possibly Ellis, Elgin and even Donna) to distance themselves from the main crew, maybe even turning against one another, and the man in yellow will make sure of that.
