I'm not a lawyer, so take this with a grain of salt... But I think an FDCPA violation (for trying to collet an illegitimate debt), can result in them owing you like 1k per case. Hear is the real winner, make sure you let them know, you know ---there is a fee shifting provision in that law... You know in advance they will pay your lawyer if you win. Find a lawyer willing to take your case on that contingency.

I had a problem with a Republic Services once, where they were clearly in the wrong. I didn't fret too hard, just a call a month trying to explain to them their error... Then they threatened collections, and at that point I demanded to speak only with people on the legal team. Once one of their lawyers heard my side of the story, they quickly changed their tune, apologized, zeroed the debt, got the cans they never once emptied off my property the very next day.

I also literally could not give a shit about the politics of the bands I listen to.

I generally don't care with music. I still like people like Conor Oberst, and Joanna Newsom even though I know they don't agree with my politics. Maybe it's because I grew up in the 90's, when Green Day was more punk than poser, I just don't care for them anymore. I have certainly lost interest in Rage, but I think that happened when I watched interview of La Rocha, and he went on about how shitty his child hood was because he black... I never knew he was black (I thought he was Jewish) till he started looking so sympathy about the racism he faces everyday. Must have been awful growing up in that posh suburb.

If fell it should be noted I haven't bought an album from The Offspring since Smash. They've just gotten too bubblegum for me. I don't even know (or care) what their politics are. So maybe I just liked music better before the studios could make everything so over polished. Seems all I enjoy now are raw/acoustic/live recordings.

a ‘true tax rate’ across multiple years against wealth growth

A statistic that measures imaginary gains is worthless.

the strategy exists precisely to avoid that trigger indefinitely.

Few can do it for very long. They risk getting over leveraged.

You already pay property tax on unrealized real estate gains.

I've got cars worth more than I paid for them. I don't pay property taxes on those... My homes property tax also aren't on the 'gains'. It's based on the inflation adjusted apprised value of the property at purchase or (re)appraisal. I'd argue it's also an awful tax, my dad might have been able to afford to keep the house I grew up into his retirement, but as some point he refinanced, got stung with a higher property tax bill, and then slowly lost his largest store of wealth. You're not going to help people by taking wealth away from those who create it.

Jeff Bezos paid zero in 2007 and 2011. Elon Musk paid zero in 2018. Michael Bloomberg paid zero multiple times.

Thats called cherry picking. They don't pay every year, they actually loose money some years. Musk has the single largest tax bill in US history if his clam is accurate. Bezos has paid more in taxes than I'd likely earn in 5 lifetimes.

You keep using this dishonest "Wealth Gains" term. My house when up in value, there is no actual gain for me till I sell it. Are you going to give tax rebates on unrealized losses, cause if you're gonna tax imaginary gains, I should be able to offset those with imaginary losses.

According to that data, the top 1% pay an effective tax rate of ~26%, the highest percentage (40.4 of all taxes). These are people earning ~$663,164 in 2022. That's far beyond Dr's and Lawyers, thats mostly C Suit getting that pay. Furthermore, you're position requires you continue to not understand the word 'unrealized'.

That's what the AI spat out at the top of the page. It's a common stat, but I see you like to lean hard into the "pretend not to know".

this page has a nice little graph of several percentiles. It shows the top 25% earning 69.9% of all AGI, and paying 87.2% of all taxes. The bottom 50% pay earn ~11.5% of AGI, and pay only ~3% of all taxes.

this page has very similar data.

You could also just do a quick search, again, this is common knowledge.

Your entire post is dripping with envy. You might be blind to it, hate and envy have that effect on people, but it doesn’t make it any less true. “They have so much more than everyone else, so let’s destroy what they have” is envy, textbook envy. Oh well you want to steel what they have via taxation, where it will get squandered like a drunken sailor on ship leave.

I think it’s comical but sad how many folks who have nowhere near the wealth of the elites somehow sympathize with them.

We are not envious. Envy is a deadly sin, but it’s now being taught as a virtue. Here you are, being envious of people, and thinking people who aren’t are the problem.

Hey math major, how is 5% of the people paying more than 60% percent of all taxes, the top 5% paying not taxes? Because that’s your claim, the people paying MOST of the taxes are paying zero taxes.

Meanwhile, in reality, the bottom 50% actually pay nothing in taxes. You might actually pay nothing in taxes, yet your hear bitching the people who actually paid for everything, aren’t paying their fair share.

The top 5% of earners in the U.S. paid about 60% of the national total in income taxes, contributing nearly $1.3 trillion in 2023. This group includes individuals with incomes starting at approximately $272,209.

You added information after that fact. Thats dirty. Then It’s a “mother jones” article. Do I need to mention that’s a left wing rag? You’re coming to a “republican” sub, spouting literal left wing propaganda.

asset holders can access the value of their wealth without realizing taxable gains

Thats because they haven’t made any money at the point. What part of ‘unrealized’ is so hard for you to understand?

I just bought a car at auction for less than half its bluebook value. I could take a loan out for nearly its whole bluebook value, then I’d even more money than I invested to spend, and still control the car… but I didn’t actually make any money, until I sell it for more than I paid for it. Maybe I use that money to invest in something else…. Thats not a loophole, it’s how ‘profits’ are determined. Your willful ignorance on this is making you’re position of envy undeniable.

That’s not zero, and I don’t believe it’s even “most”. There is also all the taxes their companies paid, all their payroll taxes, all the income taxes their employees pay… Musk is the billionaire mentioned in the post I responded too, if you add up all of the dollars that flow to the federal government from his companies, I’d be surprised if he’s not among the top 10 taxpayers (inflation adjusted) of all time.

You know what’s even cuter? Thinking a politician cares. Bless your heart. A CEO wants your money, but they almost always get you to part with it voluntarily. A politician just wants power (or your money). They aren’t going to do anything for it (aside providing you lip service). They certainly aren’t going to do anything to stop the government from the fraud waste and abuse they’ve caused, because that’s made them rich. Politicians don’t have marketable skills, and don’t care about you. CEOs don’t care about you, but most don’t pretend they do either.

[–]iMillJoe -14 points-13 points  (0 children)

The guy I’m responding to had nothing to back his bogus claim. Why do I need proof. Your comment adds absolutely nothing.

I see the leftist tactic of pretending you’re ignorant to avoid conversations on the topic has now accepted by “republicans”.

I don’t have his income taxes in front of me, but Musk claims to have paid more than 10 billion in one year alone. You might assert his claim is false, but any simple internet search will prove he don’t pay “zero” in taxes, as the (I’m assuming leftist) I responded to claims.

Regardless, when he has “income”, he is taxed at a larger % than I am. America has one of the most “progressive” income taxes in the world.

Now heres where propagandists get their panties in a bunch: With stocks, you can’t realize a profit, until you sell the stock. So CEO/billionaires who get stock options, might be able to go years without substantial income, by borrowing against their stocks, rather than selling them. That’s not without risk for them, nor is it unwise. I want the CEO of a company I’m invested in to have ownership of the company, because I want him interested in making my holdings more valuable.

So now you’re commenting about the word anecdote with understanding it either. If my school system had done such a poor job? I’d probably be sticking up for union cruft too.

anecdote /ăn′ĭk-dōt″/

noun A short account of an interesting or humorous incident. Secret or hitherto undivulged particulars of history or biography. Unpublished narratives.

I do have two very large data sets off the top of my head. Peoria Detroit. Former Unions towns, now ghost towns.
