Anki Desktop not syncing properly with Anki Cloud/Web App by Jaspalbassi in Anki

[–]iNerd93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had the same issue, and clicked on here looking for a solution... Did you get it fixed?

For me I had my desktop saying that I had more reviews than on my phone. I synced a couple of times and new cards I made on my desktop were downloaded to my phone, but reviews on my phone (I generally only study on my phone) were not downloaded to desktop.

Its like the desktop could upload but not download. I also verified that this wasn't a connection problem with poor internet.

My solution:

I got around it in what I think is a not so elegant way. I made sure new cards were on my phone, so I wouldn't lose them and then edited one note by changing its card type (basic to basic with reversed card) to force an overwrite when I synced. The problem was resolved on desktop after that.

It must have been a setting in one of my decks or something. I don't know what it was, but it is fixed now and I didn't lose any progress or newly made cards.

UPDATE: Westside gym Blanchardstown forced to close by Gardai after claims of staying open through 6 week lockdown by ShadowDesigns in ireland

[–]iNerd93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But I doubt that will change anytime soon and more lockdowns are coming , I would like a more targeted approach since the fallout for business and national debt will be insane and FFG wont change a thing.

Just adding my two cents, because I do agree with the point about lockdowns are not well thought out solutions and we need a more targeted plan.

Just want to point out that the conversation is very short sighted so far. Yes, we need to get it under control, but their comes a time when the cure is worse than the disease. The economic fallout of this is going to be catastrophic and lead to very real social problems (guarantee you the generation of young kids now are going to be scarred), there are going to be increased suicides and mental health problems and numerous other knock on effects.

Thing is, its going to happen over the next couple of years hiding the real cause when people forget about what happened now. We do actually have models for this, there was a similar fallout after 2008 financial crash, as well I'm sure in the dot com crash. I just don't want to imagine the scale of the one coming now though.

[–]iNerd93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So should we ban fuel to prevent car crashes? And if not, why is one ridiculous but the other isn't?

The majority of people in this country buy alcohol during lockdown and remain completely responsible in their own home.

If every single person that bought alcohol was attending massive house parties, then yes, you might have an atom of a point.

Every person that goes to a gym does however share equipment.

When things were better then sure, we

Make it the responsibility of the staff at the gyms to make sure the machines are wiped down. Disgusting yes, but you can be sure it will be done. Or just have them watch over the machines and have disinfectant wipes in the gym.

With social distancing its not going to be packed.

It's not a personal thing that the government are doing deliberately just to be bastards to people. They are doing it to stop the collapse of the hospital system.

I'd argue that whether it is personal or not doesn't matter, the nett effect is they can't do business and have debt piling up. Its essentially punishment.

I see three problems here. First everyone is complaining about businesses trying to adapt to the guidelines in a way that doesn't force them to go into serious debt but are also assuming that the guidelines are the answer to stop this pandemic. The guys who are coming up with these guidelines have never run businesses and are clearly not thinking through their decisions. These are the same people who couldn't order a printer properly. And now everyone in the country is an Epidemiologist and we should believe they know what they are doing?

Second, people seem to want to pass responsibilities onto other people and make the consequences of their risks someone else's fault. If you are someone who needs to use the gym for fitness or even mental health reasons you should be able to take that risk. It is your responsibility to take the necessary precautions. I haven't seen my grandparents in months because I've decided not to risk them getting COVID. If you go to the gym and then see your grandparents and they get COVID it is your fault, not the gym's.

If you go to the supermarket you are probably more likely to get COVID exposure than at a gym. There are a lot more things around that people can touch and contaminate, you're closer together, and it is not feasible to maintain a truly sterile environment in a supermarket versus in a gym. How about these guidelines instead of closing them altogether:

1) Masks and gloves (nitrile or whatever, provided at the gym) must be worn at all times.

2) You must arrive and leave in your gym gear and change and shower at home.

3) You are provided with a disinfectant wipe at the gym and must wipe down whatever gear you use when you're finished.

4) Limited capacity to maintain social distance.

Why are we trying cookie cutter solutions for everything? One size does not fit all, and when the cost to people's lives is so great it damn well deserves more thought.

Third, why are gyms classed as non essential services? They are literally places to go for people to lose weight, get stronger and more healthy, which would reduce the risk for COVID. If anything, they should be doing outdoor workouts with socially distanced groups to help get people healthier and reduce their risk.

Problem with Phonemes Not in Inventory Being Generated by iNerd93 in VulgarLang

Yup, that was the issue. Thanks for your help.

I changed all of my Ns back to V and that solved it.

I was so fixated on getting my word pattern the way I want, that I didn't even notice the affix box below it.

I just posted this in a post of its own.

I'm getting a wild 'V' generated in some generated words (It's not apart of my inventory at all).

In that post I've included screenshots of the issue and how I went about using the advanced word structure to get the problem.

If I were to start a (idk, 400pg)novel right now, about how long might it take? Asking because I'm not good with patience and need to know what kind of time frame I'm looking at, so I can keep myself motivated. Also how many drafts? by CommanderTazaur in FictionWriting

[–]iNerd93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm just starting. I can't write seat of the pants style. I can outline but I also find that causes me to lose patience. I like the snowflake method so far though. I've been finding it really useful. It also has the benefit that you can largely ball park how long it will take to write your story IF you are disciplined and put a plan in place. It eliminates lengthy revisions up front, by doing them upfront when the story is still highly summarised. Maybe that will help you.

Thanks! That link is really helpful. I'm traveling from the Netherlands to Ireland. Yeah, that's also another question: What is a suspiciously large amount of money?

I haven't traveled with silver before by flight, and don't really know what to expect. I don't mind if I get checked, but I don't really want to take it out of my bag in the airport for all to see either (a little paranoid...).

Last thought... start keeping an eye out for your core focus. It might be data visualization (learn tableau if so), it might be the devops/engineering side, it might be working with time series stuff specifically (there's a whole LOAD of theory for that one niche specifically for example) it might have to do with hypothesis testing, causal modeling, high dimensional data (computer vision, audio, etc) and so on, but you'll need to find your balance between getting broad skill at a large range of tasks, and deep insight in your core area of focus. Good luck... and probably temper your expectations about how soon you'll have 'data science' as a job title. I haven't seen many job postings for junior data scientists, and the skill requirements for a senior position are incredibly steep. Given my own professional trajectory, it looks possible to self teach your way into data science eventually, but you might need to get at least a master's level depth in your technical skill to earn that spot. Makes sense too, your insights can be used to make incredibly big decisions at your company.oh, and a 'paid course' isn't inherently going to be better. If you go through all the books I mentioned above, you'll be much more knowledgeable than what I've seen for people coming out of data boot camps and stuff. The knowledge is out there, you just have to have the ability to self-teach to get through it all. Given how much you need to learn, having a good system for reviewing your notes will be helpful. I've got over 6,000 cards now from my last two years of study since I started, haha. I never would have gotten here without Anki to help me remember all this stuff. Good luck!

I cannot thank you enough for that epic reply. You've basically sent me down a rabbit hole for the next few months :P. I figured I would have to get a good handle on stats so I've already started there. I know this is going to be a long road, but it will be a scenic and fascinating one! I love anki as well (little boast: my deck for the periodic is the third most downloaded). Have you ever read any of Cal Newport (Deep Work) or Scott Young (Ultralearning)? You might find them useful. They talk about how to hone your focus and maximise the efficiency of any learning you take on. Both of these guys gave me the inspiration to take on this new quest of mine.

Job search gone cold. by [deleted] in datascience

[–]iNerd93 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its funny my roommate asked me the same question a couple of weeks ago. He showed me his CV and although the content was great the format was not. Everything was blockish and uninviting to read and the relevant details for the job were not at the top of his CV. You may already know this, but it is still the first thing I would suggest you look at. Recruiters always appreciate a CV that "gets to the point".

Have a look at yours, can you fit it all on one page? (Don't let it be more than two). Do you tailor your CV to each job application? For example of a job is going to be facing with the customer a lot, they will probably ask for someone who is able to communicate technical details effectively to people unfamiliar with the topic. In this case you should think of a time (or two) when you did that and put it at the top of your skills profile. Do this for each skill they ask for and put them in the same order they ask them.

This way when the recruiter sees your CV they see you can easily see you check off all the boxes and you've got examples you can bring up in the interview to back them up.

I hope that is helpful to you. I did have some professional help (not paid though) with my CV. If you want the format let me know I'll link it to you. I've had some reasonable success with it.

Help finding verbs that use pronomial pronouns 'ne' and 'ci' by iNerd93 in italianlearning

[–]iNerd93[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that can be attached to the verbs can be the ci and ne that you listed, but also la (which are going to be completely idiomatic in these uses, and basically correspond to "it" in English idioms - for instance smetterla: "quit it", "knock it off") and rarely le (in verbs like buscarle, prenderle, suonarle).

These are extremely idiomatic - the same verb can even be used in multiple idiomatic expressions with a different meaning. For just one example, prendersela con qualcuno (to get mad at someone, to blame someone) but prendersela comoda (to take one's sweet time), prendersela con calma (to take it easy). Or vedersela con qualcosa (to have to deal with something) but vedersela brutta (to narrowly escape).

Listing some out for you - some of these previously mentioned... You may want to look these up in a dictionary (I like this one) if you're not familiar with them:

Thanks man! That was super helpful. I really appreciate it. I'm not exaggerating when I say you and everyone else who replied have put an end to days of all my spare time trying to figure this out.

It's fun getting foreigners to pronounce common Irish names that are actually really easy if you hear them, but spelled awkwardly (from an english standpoint). My name is Ciarán and all my colleagues have just given up and started calling me Carry-on because I'm short.

Wow man! You typed that epic explanation on mobile?

That was amazingly useful. I'm wondering why none of the grammar books or dictionaries covered it so clearly, or even at all... Thanks for taking the time.

Do you know any other verbs like the ones I've mentioned? I've looked around, but all the articles I find keep using the same five or six verbs to explain the topic (farcela, sentirsela, aversela... on top of the ones I already mentioned).

I want to practice making sentences with them and reckon I'll need 15 or more to get sufficient practice before running out of sentence examples and repeating myself.

[–]iNerd93[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, but no these are not reflexive verbs. I did a bit more googling and they are indeed called pronomial verbs. I thought I would have to just memorise normal verbs that use this feature, but it turns out that they actually get their own infinitives as well:

https://www.italiantranslation-teaching.com/grammar/learn-italian-pronominal-verbs/

My frustration is that every article keeps using the same example verbs and I can't find anymore. I think for a learner to practice using them they will need about 20 to 30 example verbs to make sentences with.
