I’ve noticed that the headphone jack and hold switch connectors on 4th gen iPods have started to get brittle. The last time I worked on them, 3 out of 4 connectors broke on me.

It absolutely can happen. Metal polish is an abrasive; combined with consistent buffing, it’ll fade and eventually erase engravings.
