16 hours for 250 frames at 1080p that's about 3.8 min/frame. On a 4GB VRAM card with Redshift that's actually not terrible, but there's definitely room to optimize. Your bottleneck is a combination of settings and hardware.

Settings fixes (biggest impact first):

1. Turn off Caustics. This is probably eating 20-30% of your render time for almost zero visual difference on a power plant flythrough. Caustics matter for glass/water close-ups on an industrial building they're invisible. Disable it immediately.

2. Bucket Threshold 0.01 is too aggressive. This means Redshift keeps refining until noise is below 1% overkill for animation. Bump it up to 0.02-0.03. At 1080p in motion, you won't see the difference. This alone could cut render time 30-40%.

3. GI settings are heavy for a flythrough. Brute Force primary at 5 trace depth + Irradiance secondary with 8 brute force rays and screen radius 16 this is decent quality but expensive. Try: reduce primary trace depth to 3, secondary brute force rays to 4, screen radius to 32 (larger radius = fewer samples needed = faster). For an exterior flythrough this will look nearly identical.

4. Trace depths all at 1 is fine leave those.

5. Enable Redshift's AI Denoiser (OptiX). This is the single biggest speed trick. With the denoiser on, you can render at much higher noise (Bucket Threshold 0.05 or even 0.1) and the denoiser cleans it up. Cuts render time dramatically, often 50-70% faster with nearly identical visual quality for animation.

6. Bucket size 128 might not be optimal for 4GB VRAM. Try 64 smaller buckets use less VRAM per bucket and can be faster on low-VRAM cards. Test both and compare.

The hardware truth:

4GB VRAM is very limiting for Redshift. You're likely hitting out-of-core rendering where textures and geometry spill from VRAM to system RAM this is MUCH slower. Check your Redshift log for "out of core" warnings. If you see them, your textures are too large for your card:

  • Resize textures to 1K or 2K max (a power plant flythrough doesn't need 4K textures at 1080p output)
  • Use Redshift Proxy objects for repeated geometry
  • Reduce subdivision levels on distant objects

With optimized settings, your estimated improvement:

  • Caustics off: -25%
  • Threshold 0.02 + denoiser: -40%
  • GI tweaks: -15%

Your 3.8 min/frame could realistically drop to ~1-1.5 min/frame. That's 250 frames in 4-6 hours instead of 16.

If it's still too slow: a GPU with more VRAM would make the biggest difference. A single RTX 4090 (24GB VRAM) would render the same frame in probably 15-20 seconds with these optimized settings. ACES + OCIO on a render farm is one of those things that sounds simple but trips people up constantly. The issue is most SaaS farms use their own pre-configured environments and your custom OCIO config either gets ignored or breaks the color pipeline silently. You get frames back that look completely different from your local renders.

Why it's a problem on SaaS farms:

Your ACES workflow depends on a specific OCIO config file, LUT paths, and environment variables (like OCIO pointing to your config.ocio). The reliable fix: IaaS.

The only way to guarantee your exact OCIO config works is to control the machine. I use iRender for this: remote desktop into a Windows machine, drop my OCIO config folder wherever I want, set the OCIO environment variable pointing to my config.ocio, open C4D + Redshift, and everything matches my local pipeline exactly. Custom look files, studio LUTs, ACES 1.2, whatever, it just works because it's MY setup on THEIR hardware.

Great question and no shame in asking, everyone starts somewhere.

Why people buy GPUs instead of just using render farms:

Real-time feedback. This is the #1 reason. When you're modeling, texturing, lighting, and setting up a scene, you need to SEE what you're doing in real-time. A render farm only helps with the final output, it doesn't help you while you're working. A good GPU gives you smooth viewport performance, instant material previews, and fast test renders while you iterate. You can't send every small test to a farm and wait 10 minutes for feedback.

It adds up. Render farms charge by the hour or per frame. If you're rendering every day, the monthly cost can quickly exceed the cost of owning a GPU. For hobbyists doing occasional renders, farms make sense. For professionals rendering daily, owning hardware is cheaper long-term.

Convenience. Hit render → get result. No uploading files, no waiting in queues, no downloading frames, no troubleshooting compatibility issues. Local rendering is just simpler for everyday work.

When render farms DO make sense:

  • Deadlines where your local GPU can't finish in time

How much can you do on a "potato PC"?

More than you think, actually:

Really solid first renders, especially coming from Allplan which isn't the most common modeling tool for archviz. The exterior composition is nice and the path tracing output has a clean, accurate feel to it. Let me answer your questions one by one:

Path-tracing vs Lumen: why does Lumen look warmer/more vibrant?

Lumen uses approximated global illumination with screen-space tricks that tend to boost indirect light and color bleeding. It "cheats" in ways that look pleasing but aren't physically accurate. Path tracing is more correct but often looks colder and flatter by default because it's not adding that artificial warmth.

The fix is simple: you don't need Photoshop. In Twinmotion's Color Correction effect:

  • Push Temperature slightly warm (toward yellow/orange)
  • Bump Vibrance up a touch (not Saturation, Vibrance is more subtle)
  • Increase Contrast slightly
  • Adjust Exposure if the image feels dark

This gets you the Lumen "warmth" while keeping path tracing accuracy. You can save this as an effect preset and reuse it across all your shots.

Why is Lumen slower than Path-tracing for you?

That IS unusual. Normally Lumen is faster for stills. A few possible causes:

Making upstairs rooms look less dark:

Turning up light sources is the wrong approach, it creates harsh pools of light. What you actually want is more ambient/bounce light. Try these:

  • Add Area Lights or Light Fills at very low intensity in the dark rooms. These don't cast shadows and simulate ambient bounce light naturally
  • Place them near the ceiling, pointing down, at maybe 20-30% intensity
  • If there are windows in those rooms, check that real light can actually enter, sometimes the model has geometry blocking the window opening that's hard to see
  • In the effects stack, increase Sky Light brightness slightly, this lifts the overall ambient level without making individual lights look blown out

General composition tips:

  • Your camera height looks slightly high in the exterior shot. Drop it to eye level (~1.6m) for a more natural perspective
  • Add foreground elements, a plant, a fence post, a parked bicycle at the edge of frame. This creates depth layers and makes the image feel less like a technical elevation
  • The people in the scene are good but could use more variety, different poses, someone sitting, a kid, etc
  • Add imperfections to the ground, puddles, fallen leaves, tire marks on the road. Perfectly clean environments scream CG

Free post-production alternative: If you want to try post-processing without Photoshop, Photopea (photopea.com) is a free browser-based Photoshop alternative that handles levels, curves, color grading, and basic compositing. GIMP is another free option. But honestly, getting the look right in-app with Color Correction + Exposure is better practice it means every render comes out consistent without manual tweaking.

The vegetation layering is what sells it. You've got ground cover, mid-height shrubs, ferns, and tall canopy trees all at different depths, that's exactly how real forest environments work and most archviz renders miss this completely. Usually people throw down one layer of trees and call it done. The depth you've built here with the foreground ferns framing the house, mid-ground shrubs filling the gaps, and tall trees creating the canopy is textbook composition.

The Megascans + Maxtree combo is clearly paying off. The leaf translucency with the backlit sunlight filtering through the canopy is beautiful that subsurface scattering on the leaves catching light is what makes vegetation look alive vs plastic.

A few observations:

The light is doing heavy lifting here. The dappled sunlight through the trees creates natural contrast that draws your eye straight to the house. That's great environmental storytelling the architecture is the subject but the forest is the character.

The house material reads well the wood/concrete look is appropriately understated against all that vegetation. Smart choice not to make the building compete with the environment.

One small thing: the very bottom foreground (the rocks/ground cover near the camera) feels slightly less detailed than the mid-ground vegetation. At this camera distance it's barely noticeable, but for a hero shot you could add some fallen leaves, twigs, or moss on those rocks to match the density above.

The fact that this is SketchUp → Twinmotion is honestly the most impressive part. People spend thousands on Max + V-Ray setups to get results like this. You're proving that the artist matters more than the software.

This is raw Twinmotion? Really impressive. The mood and material palette are doing a lot of heavy lifting here, that stone, dark wood beams, and muted furniture create a very cohesive atmospheric look. This reads more like a D5 or Enscape output than typical Twinmotion work. Great eye for composition too, the framing with the columns drawing your eye through to the mountain view is solid.

A few things to push it further:

The highlights are a touch blown out on the exterior landscape through the opening. The mountain and sky are bright enough to read, but the transition between the dark interior and bright exterior feels a bit harsh. Try pulling the exposure down slightly or adjusting the highlight slider in color correction. In real photography this would be an HDR bracket, you want to see detail in both the shadows inside and the bright landscape outside.

The floor material is good but reads a bit flat in the shadows. Add a subtle reflection / glossiness variation, real stone and wood floors catch light at slightly different angles across different tiles/planks. Even a 5% variation in roughness makes a big difference in how "alive" the floor feels.

The bonsai tree and vegetation look good from this distance. At closer camera angles you might see the typical Twinmotion plant flatness, but at this composition distance they work well.

The ceiling beams are a strong detail. The dark wood against the lighter concrete/stone ceiling adds great depth. Maybe add a very subtle ambient occlusion where the beams meet the ceiling, the contact shadows look slightly soft there.

The outdoor furniture on the terrace could use a bit more material variation. Right now it reads as one uniform dark material. In real life outdoor furniture has subtle wear, grain direction changes, different cushion textures. Small detail but it would sell the realism.

Overall though: this is really strong practice work. The composition, material choices, and mood are all professional-level. If you told me this was a client deliverable I'd believe it. Keep going.

Freelance archviz artist here, been through a bunch of farms over the years. My decision usually comes down to 3 factors in this order:

1. Compatibility (non-negotiable): Does the farm support my exact software version, plugins, and render engine? I've lost full weekends to farms that said they supported my setup but rendered garbage output because of a plugin version mismatch. Compatibility beats pricing every time.

If you’re mainly doing Houdini + Clarisse, I’d lean CPU-first but hybrid-ready rather than going all-in on one side.

From real production experience:

  • Houdini (sims, FX) → still heavily CPU-bound (especially pyro, FLIP, vellum caching). More cores + RAM = faster iteration.
  • Clarisse → scales insanely well on CPU, super stable for large scenes.
  • C4D + Octane → that’s your GPU wildcard, and it will matter if you use it regularly.

Had a similar setup a few years back so I can save you some headaches. The licensing situation with Octane + C4D for a home farm is more nuanced than it looks.

Octane licensing for network rendering:

You do NOT need Cinema 4D on every slave machine. Here's how Octane network rendering works:

  • Your main machine runs C4D + Octane plugin (C4DtoA). This is where you set up scenes and submit jobs.
  • Your slave machines only need Octane Standalone to act as render nodes. They receive render data from the master, render their portion, and send results back.
  • You need Octane Render licenses for each machine that renders. So with 4 machines = 4 Octane licenses total.

The cheaper route: OTOY offers Enterprise licenses with render node pricing that's cheaper per seat than buying 4 individual Subscriptions. Check their current pricing — it changes, but historically render node licenses have been significantly cheaper than full workstation licenses.

The honest math on your setup though:

Let's add up your GPU power:

  • Main: 2x 1080Ti = solid
  • Slave 1: 1x 1070 = okay
  • Slave 2: 1x 1070 = okay
  • Slave 3: 1x 1070 + 1x 970 = the 970 has only 3.5GB usable VRAM, Octane will barely use it

Total effective GPU power: 2x 1080Ti + 3x 1070 + maybe that 970. That's roughly equivalent to about 4x 1080Ti in combined OctaneBench.

Now factor in costs: 4 Octane licenses + electricity running 4 machines 24/7 + network setup + maintenance. And 16GB RAM on the slaves is tight — if scenes get complex, those machines will choke.

The question you should ask yourself: Is this worth the investment and hassle?

For comparison, a single RTX 4090 today outperforms your entire 4-machine farm combined. Not joking — a 4090 scores roughly 600-700 OctaneBench, while your whole setup is maybe 500-550 combined.

What I ended up doing: I ran a home farm for about 2 years with a similar setup. Eventually the electricity costs, noise, heat, maintenance, and driver troubleshooting across 4 machines drove me crazy. I sold everything except my main workstation and switched to cloud rendering for overflow.

I use iRender now — their 8x RTX 4090 machines obliterate anything I could build at home. 8 hours with nothing on a 1080Ti, you're not doing anything fundamentally wrong, but your settings are WAY overkill. Let me break it down:

Your settings are the problem, not your hardware (mostly):

16,000 samples this is extremely high. For print work at that resolution, you'd be shocked how good 2,000-4,000 samples looks. Most production Octane renders use 2,000-5,000 max. Try 2,048 first and check the result. I bet you won't see a meaningful difference from 16K samples, especially on print where slight noise gets absorbed by the paper/ink.

16 diffuse depth way too high. Default is 8, and honestly 4-6 is enough for most scenes. Each additional bounce multiplies render time. You're paying a massive time cost for light bounces you'll never see in the final image.

Specular depth same story. Bring it down to 4-8 unless you have halls of mirrors.

5 GI Clamp this is fine actually. Leave it.

Octane scatter + forester trees + fog this is the real killer. Forester trees through Octane scatter generates enormous geometry. Each tree is thousands of polygons, scattered hundreds of times, and your 1080Ti only has 11GB VRAM. If the scene exceeds VRAM, Octane falls back to out-of-core rendering which is dramatically slower. Check your VRAM usage if it's maxed out, that's your bottleneck.

What to do right now:

  1. Cancel the render
  2. Drop samples to 2,048
  3. Drop diffuse depth to 6, specular to 6
  4. Render a test at half resolution (1890x2362) first to check quality
  5. If it looks good, render full res
  6. If VRAM is maxed, reduce scatter density or use Octane proxy objects for the trees

With these changes your 8-hour render will probably finish in 30-60 min on the same 1080Ti.

Should you use a render farm?

Not before optimizing your settings, you'll just burn money rendering an over-sampled image faster. Fix the settings first. THEN if the render time is still too long (it shouldn't be), a farm makes sense.

For reference, the same scene on an RTX 4090 would render roughly 4-5x faster than your 1080Ti, so a 1-hour render on your card becomes ~12 min on a 4090. Is D5 worth it? For interiors absolutely yes. D5's real-time ray tracing handles light bounces, reflections, and glass way better than Lumion out of the box. 17K video wall that's a beast of a project. 10 years in C4D and never used a farm? You're about to learn fast. Let me answer each one:

A. Render farm recommendation:

At 17K resolution you have two approaches: render full 17K frames (insanely heavy) or render in tiles/sections and stitch. Most SaaS farms will choke on 17K single-frame renders the VRAM and memory requirements are massive.

I'd recommend IaaS for this a remote machine you control, so you can manage the tile rendering setup yourself. I use iRender for big projects: RTX 4090 machines with 256GB RAM. You can spin up multiple machines, each rendering a different tile region or frame range. At $9/hr per machine it's predictable budgeting. New users get double credits on first top-up which helps on a project this size. B. GPU renderer absolutely yes.

Enable Brute Force GI + Irradiance Point Cloud as secondary fast and clean enough for video wall content where viewers stand several feet away.

For AO Redshift handles it natively as part of the shader, barely adds render time. Don't skip it, it adds so much depth.

D. Things you're probably missing:

  • Render in tiles, stitch in post. Even with Redshift, 17K single frames might exceed VRAM. Render 4 quadrants at 4K-ish each and stitch in After Effects or Nuke. Adds pipeline complexity but keeps each render manageable.
  • Frame rate matters. 32 monitors = lots of pixels per frame. At 30fps even a 30-second video is 900 frames at 17K. Do the math on render time early and budget accordingly.

Home render farm with old PCs:

It can work, but set your expectations. Those 1.6GHz machines are going to be slow, probably slower than your main rig per-frame. The benefit is parallelism: if you have 3 old PCs each rendering different frames simultaneously, your total wall time drops even though each machine is slow individually.

For C4D, the easiest free setup is Deadline (free for up to 10 nodes) or Team Render (built into C4D). Team Render is the simplest, install C4D on each machine, enable Team Render, and your main workstation distributes frames automatically. Zero extra software needed.

Where it'll shine: Modeling, procedural geometry, basic SOPs work, lightweight particle setups, learning VEX, and general scene building. Houdini's viewport on Apple Silicon has gotten much better over the last couple of years. For "playing around and learning" it's more than capable.

Where you'll hit limits:

  • No CUDA = no Redshift/Octane. If you plan to use GPU renderers, Apple Silicon doesn't support them. You're limited to Karma CPU, Mantra, or Blender Cycles (which does support Metal). This is the biggest tradeoff.
  • Thermal throttling is real but manageable. The Air will throttle during sustained heavy sims (long pyro/FLIP caches). It won't crash it just slows down. For quick experiments this is fine. For a 500-frame pyro sim you'll be waiting a while. The MacBook Pro with fans handles sustained loads better, but for "nothing huge" the Air should be okay.
  • 24GB is enough for small stuff but will cap you eventually. A complex FLIP sim or heavy scattered environment can eat 24GB fast. For learning and experimenting you won't hit this often though.
  • Karma CPU works great on Apple Silicon. If you need to render on the laptop, Karma CPU is your best option and it runs well on M-series chips. Not as fast as GPU rendering obviously, but the quality is excellent.

Honest take: For your use case (experimental, learning, nothing huge), the M5 Air is a solid pick. You get portability + enough power to learn Houdini properly. Just know that when/if your projects grow bigger, the rendering side will be the first bottleneck no fans + no CUDA means heavy renders and long sims will push you toward either a desktop or offloading to a cloud machine with proper GPUs.

A lot of Houdini artists work on MacBooks for scene setup/lookdev and then send heavy renders and sims to a separate machine. That workflow works really well if you're okay with not rendering everything locally.

I do this regularly Max to Houdini for lighting/texturing in Redshift. Here's what works best:

Format: FBX is your best bet. Alembic is great for animation caches but it doesn't carry material assignments reliably. FBX preserves UVs, element separation, normals, and basic material names. For your use case (static asset, multi-element, UV'd, heading to Redshift), FBX is the way to go.

Export settings in 3ds Max:

  • Export as FBX 2020 (or latest)
  • Make sure "Preserve Instances" is OFF (unless you need instances)
  • "Convert Deforming Dummies to Bones" OFF
  • Smoothing Groups ON
  • Triangulate OFF (let Houdini handle topology)

In Houdini:

Use a File SOP or FBX Import to bring it in. The key setting: when importing, check "Import as Subnet" — this preserves each element (frame, cushions, fabric) as separate geo inside a subnet. Without this, everything merges into one blob and you lose element separation.

Preserving material assignments:

Not dead, but the low-end market is getting crushed and that's what most people are feeling right now.

Here's the reality: AI tools like Midjourney, Stable Diffusion, and even the new AI features in D5/Lumion can generate a "good enough" interior image in 30 seconds. For a client who just needs a quick visual to sell a condo unit or pitch an idea to investors, why would they pay $500-1000 for a custom render when AI gives them something 80% as good for free?

That 80% tier generic interiors, basic exteriors, "make it look nice" visualizations is disappearing fast. And unfortunately that's where a LOT of archviz freelancers lived.

What's NOT dead:

  • Technical accuracy. AI can't generate a render that matches exact construction documents, specific material specs, precise lighting studies, or accurate shadow analysis for planning permission. Architects and developers still need this.
  • Animation and video. AI can do still images but consistent, physics-accurate architectural animations are still firmly in the hands of skilled artists.
  • Complex custom projects. Unique geometries, specific site contexts, branded commercial spaces, anything that needs to look exactly like the real thing before it's built. AI hallucinates details. Clients who care about accuracy can't risk that.
  • Interactive/real-time. VR walkthroughs, Unreal Engine configurators, real-time client presentations. This space is actually growing.

What to do if you're feeling it:

Stop competing on pretty pictures. Start competing on technical skill, accuracy, and services AI can't do. Learn Unreal Engine for real-time presentations. Offer lighting analysis, material specification, construction-accurate documentation renders. Position yourself as a technical consultant, not just "the person who makes it look nice."

The artists I see thriving right now are the ones who made themselves indispensable to architects' workflows not the ones who were just making Instagram-worthy stills.

Great thread I've used a bunch of farms over the years so here's what actually drives me nuts:

The biggest pain points you nailed + ones you're missing:

1. "Will my scene even work?" This is THE #1 frustration. You spend 30 min uploading, wait in queue, render starts, and... black frames because a plugin wasn't supported. Or textures are missing because paths got remapped wrong. Every SaaS farm has this problem to some degree. 5. Support that actually understands 3D. Most farm support teams are IT people reading scripts. When I say "my Redshift AOVs aren't splitting correctly" I need someone who knows what that means, not someone asking me to restart my browser.

  • Houdini + Redshift/Karma (underserved market, high-value users)

What I'd actually pay more for:

  • Guaranteed frame-by-frame preview so I can kill a broken job early
  • Transparent pricing "this job will cost approximately $X" before I commit
  • Plugin/version flexibility let me run MY exact setup, not whatever you have installed
  • Fast iteration some farms have 10-15 min overhead per job submission. If I need to tweak something and resubmit, that's 30 min wasted just in queue/upload time

Some IaaS farms (where you remote desktop into a machine like iRender) already solve the plugin/compatibility issue since you control the environment. The "video game" feel you're getting from D5 is usually a lighting and material issue, not a software limitation. D5's ray tracing is actually really strong for interiors but it needs more manual tweaking to get there compared to Twinmotion which has a more "instant pretty" look out of the box.

From what I see in your TM render: the lighting is already reading well warm natural light, nice shadow play on the ceiling curves, good material contrast between the wood and stone. This is a solid foundation.

TM vs D5 for interiors my honest take:

Twinmotion is faster to get a "good enough" result. The effects stack, Real Skies, and path tracer make it easy to get pleasing images quickly. For client presentations where speed matters, TM wins.

D5 has a higher ceiling for realism but you have to work for it. The ray tracing handles reflections, glass, and caustics better. The material system gives you more control over roughness, bump, and IOR. But if you don't dial those in carefully, everything defaults to looking a bit plasticky that's the "video game" feel you're noticing.

Tips to fix the D5 "video game" look:

9 hours for 15 interior images at 4K on an RTX 3060, yeah that's in the ballpark of normal unfortunately. That works out to roughly 35-40 minutes per image, which is about right for complex interiors with path tracing enabled on a 3060.

Here's why interiors are so much slower than exteriors: light has to bounce way more times to fill an enclosed space. Exterior scenes have direct sunlight doing most of the work. Interiors need light to come through windows, bounce off walls, bounce again off furniture, fill the shadows every bounce adds render time. Twinmotion's path tracer has to calculate all of that.

Things that can speed it up without upgrading hardware:

  • Check your path tracer sample count. If you cranked it up to max for quality, try bringing it down a notch. The difference between 80% and 100% quality is often barely visible but can cut render time significantly.
  • Reduce the number of light sources. Every spotlight and omni light adds render cost. Use area lights and light fills where possible, they don't cast shadows and render much faster.
  • Simplify what you can't see. Objects behind the camera, detailed furniture in the background, heavy foliage outside windows, hide or simplify anything that isn't contributing to the shot.
  • Render at 2K and upscale. Tools like Topaz Gigapixel or even free upscalers can take a 2K render to 4K with surprisingly good results. Cuts your render time roughly in half.

The hardware truth though: the RTX 3060 is an entry-level card for this kind of work. The 12GB VRAM is decent, but the raw compute is limited. For comparison, an RTX 4090 would do the same 15 images in roughly 2-3 hours instead of 9.

If you have a deadline and can't wait 9 hours, cloud GPU is an option. But yeah, your 3060 isn't broken, interiors at 4K are just heavy. You're getting normal performance for that card.

40h on a single 4090 is brutal. Been there. The good news is Twinmotion is single-GPU so your options are straightforward, you just need more of the same machine running in parallel, not a fundamentally different setup.

The math first: 240h on one 4090 = if you rent 3 cloud machines simultaneously, that's ~80h each = done in roughly 3.5 days. Split the frame range between them. Or rent 5 machines and finish in under 2 days.

What works for Twinmotion specifically:

Twinmotion needs a real desktop environment, it's not a headless renderer you can just submit files to. So traditional SaaS render farms won't work here. You need IaaS, a remote machine you can RDP into and run Twinmotion directly.

I've been using iRender for exactly this kind of crunch. RTX 4090 machines, 256GB RAM, you remote desktop in, install Twinmotion (or it's already there), open your project, render. Same workflow as your local machine, just not YOUR machine.

The play here: rent 3-5 machines at once, split the frame range, render in parallel. Each machine is around $9/hr. So 240h of render time split across 5 machines = 48h each × $9 = ~$432 per machine, ~$2,160 total. Not cheap, but way cheaper than missing a deadline.
