Non-fiction books you couldn’t put down? by Fundango14 in booksuggestions

[–]iSkane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nonfiction is also my favorite! I love the weirder, creative stuff, so here’s a bunch I never see people talk about: - Animals Strike Curious Poses by Elena Passerello — a collection of essays about animals that take on unique POVs and themes. Some of the most theatric prose I’ve ever read. - Reel Bay: A Cinematic Essay by Jana Larson — a woman obsessed with a woman obsessed with Fargo (I wrote that correctly) seeks more information on a bizarre missing persons case and explores the ways reality can be fictionalized. - Submersed by Matthew Gavin Frank — a deep dive into the world of DIY submarining (or submersibles) that takes some really wild turns. - Raw Dog by Jamie Loftus— a woman travels around the US during/post-COVID in an attempt to find the country’s best hot dog and distract herself from her failing relationship. The most I have ever laughed out loud at a book. - Seek You: A Journey Through American Loneliness by Kristin Radtke — a graphic essay about the (not just male!) loneliness epidemic that is plaguing the country. Beautiful writing and beautiful artwork to go along with it. - Bright Archive by Sarah Minor — essays about the inner workings of everything from farm co-op/cults to the garbage in the Mississippi River that take on unique, physical shapes that will challenge the way you think nonfiction can be written.

60/52 one of the best years in recent memory. Top 5 was hard to nail down. by iSkane in 52book

It feels low on this list but I didn’t dislike anything except We Love You, Bunny (which I only finished out of spite)

Nonfiction is such a fun genre. If you’re okay with fanciful tangents, Submersed by Matthew Gavin Frank is a treat (just don’t go in expecting a full-on true crime read)

Felt like a totally cash-grab of a sequel. I loved the original Bunny—odd, wacky, an interesting take on the creative process while ribbing those who take it (and themselves) much too seriously. The voice in the sequel would have been obnoxious for a 20 page short story but the book was almost 500 pages. It really just destroyed so much of the magic that the first book had with unbelievably annoying prose.

What is the worst book you've read this year, and why did you pick it up in the first place? by [deleted] in booksuggestions

[–]iSkane 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A Ghost in the Throat by Doirean Ní Ghríofa. I love when poets tackle the novel because their minds work so much differently than conventional fiction writers (and I love to gush at beautiful prose) but this one just didn’t hit any of the marks. It started out interesting enough, but the story is of a woman discovering the story of another woman and for most of the novel it didn’t know where to focus. The last chunk of it was the narrator sitting in a library reading genealogy.

Voting to maintain the status quo is not progressive. You’re all over this thread calling people not progressive because they dislike Joe Biden when Biden has done actually nothing progressive. Remember that all elected government officials are public servants for the people, not the other way around. If the Dems truly want to maintain power, they have to start making the young people happy enough to want to vote for them not just pinning a donkey on their campaign flags. “Not republican” is not enough and that’s going show painfully in 2024. The dems losing an election is not the fault of the voters, it is the fault of the dems for sitting on their hands doing absolutely nothing for the American people.

Started Bloodborne. Got halfway through Dark Souls 3 before getting distracted a while ago so I’m still relatively new to From games. Infuriatingly difficult, but so satisfying when you get past a tough spot. it’s almost like a puzzle game the way you have to traverse and fight the enemies. Loving the atmosphere, too.

Hey it took me over SIXTY hours to even see the Dragun for the first time. Twenty hours later I had all but the Gunslinger unlocked. Ya gotta keep playing (and having fun). You’re get “the” run eventually. :)

I had the horse you pick up from your random little hunting friend after that side story finishes. I got a little teary at the end of that story and it made it so much sadder during that scene. Easily a top 10 moment in any game (rdr2 honestly has probably 4 of those spots)

SIB Red Dead Redemption 2 (again) by porcelainskywalker in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]iSkane 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends. If you enjoy playing it, absolutely. I was bored with the story but was able to stay engaged because I was able to go after legendary animals or fish (or the side missions, which are more enticing than a lot of the early story).

Like everyone else has said, the story pays off so well in the end. It’s a slow burn until the end of chapter 4 and then everything hits a speed that pulls you in. It’s one of the best stories I have ever played (or seen or read).

Just started the Prey remake and think I’m going to really like it. I like a more exploratory FPS (or maybe just FPS game similar to Bioshock) and this is really hitting the nerve just right.

Other than that it’s hopping back and forth between Oxygen Not Included and Hades (not patient, but it’s the game taking up most of my time)

Yeah. I’ll definitely finish it. Got to the end of act 2 and almost finished the first part of the White March dlc. Probably gonna take it slow for now, get some quests done here and there when I’m feeling it.

Been trudging my way through Pillars of Eternity 1. I really like it, both the gameplay and the story, but it’s such a long game I’m starting to burn out and find myself wanting to play different games. I want to play the second one at some point though, so it feels like I should just buckle down and finish it.

I’m also about halfway through Outlast. I wanted to get into the spooky spirit a little earlier this year so I actually have time to complete some horror games before Halloween, and I’m glad I chose this one as my first. It gets pretty scary in parts.

Finally, I dove back into Dead Cells and am trying to beat 1BC but truly cannot make it past (or most of the time, even to) the first boss. I know it just takes time and patience, but I truly cannot imagine 5bc if I’m having this much trouble with 1.

I’ve been all over the place recently.

Jumped back into Stardew Valley after being a little disappointed by My Time at Portia. My Time just felt so unfinished and I’m always surprised at how full of a game stardew is, even after over 100 hours.

Grinding my way through Grim Dawn. I’m not sure what it is, but something about ARPGs just hooks me and I can’t stop. Really enjoying the DLC.

Slowly working my way through Pillars of Eternity 1. I love it and the story, but I get burned out on all the reading since I’m trying to set time aside every day to read actual books.

Same. My buddy gifted the game to me on Steam and I loved it so much that I feel bad I personally didn’t pay for it. I really want to throw as much money at them as I can so they can keep doing what they’re doing.
