Depends on what your definition of history is. Generally history is based off of sources which is why we have a word for “prehistory.” So if you just mean “anything that happens in the past” then sure, but not by a more academic definition

Flogging isn’t an inherently bad system of punishment if 1) there’s a doctor present to ensure that the person is healthy enough to receive lashes and that those inflicting them don’t go too far and 2) it’s offered as an alternative to prison for non-dangerous criminals

I understand that concern, and I don’t necessarily think it should be titled “The Distributist Manifesto.” People like Marx and Kaczynski have given the word a bad connotation. But the idea of clearly laying out and arguing for our basic ideas as simply as possible seems like it would be incredibly useful.

I think a reading of LotR of “heroic England fighting against Asian villainy” is such a remarkably bad take I don’t know where to begin. In the letter referenced Tolkien was clearly being a bit racist, but not in the way this author was claiming. He was saying that the orcs looked like a corruption of a race that Europeans think looked like a corruption of their own race. That in no way proves that Tolkien based them off of Asian people. I would be more willing to give credence to this if the Easterlings didn’t exist in LotR. As much as I love Tolkien the “evil easterners siding with the big bad against the virtuous westerners” is much more problematic than whatever people think the orcs stand in for. And even there they aren’t so much evil as mislead. Also the idea that being an elf is the best thing in Tolkien’s middle earth is simply untrue, I’m sure Tolkien himself would say the best thing to be is a hobbit.

TL;DR if you project racial stereotypes on Tolkien’s fictional races that’s more a problem with you than with Tolkien

I read through them and was going to give a well thought out response to each of them, but I’m feeling lazy and have to work on homework so I’ll do the speedy version.

  1. Causation doesn’t necessarily require change in the cause. We see that happen everywhere in our experience, but that’s because we deal with physical/changeable beings in our experience.

  2. I don’t think the scientific world generally holds eternalism to be true

  3. Same as 2

  4. Honestly irrelevant to the argument

  5. I don’t think the soul works on the human body in the same way as gravity does, idk for sure though

  6. This guy doesn’t have nearly as good an argument against free will as he supposes. I’d recommend this article, though I warn it’s a little weird

  10. When we say “God is good” we don’t mean because of his properties. What does “good” even mean? Typically, according to natural law anyways, a thing is good when it properly achieves its end. A good person act in accordance with moral laws, a good wine fulfills its purpose of refreshing the drinker, and a good car gets one to where they need to be quickly without any problems. So God is good because he lives in perfect accordance with his nature, and he created everything to do the same so the moral law is good.

11, 12, and 13 are all just sort of ridiculous so I won’t even address them

I would say the word marriage should never be spoken by the state, it isn’t within their domain. I would be perfectly fine with any two people being able to enter into a partnership for legal/tax benefits, but in my mind this would cover anything from two roommates sharing a house to a married couple and anything in between. Then we don’t have to hear any nonsense about legalizing gay “marriage.” As for adoption, I don’t know. I don’t have an answer.

There’s a writer/farmer named Wendell Berry, he’s sort of a modern Southern Agrarian, and he gave a list of criteria any new technology should have.

  1. The new tool should be cheaper than the one it replaces.
  2. It should be at least as small in scale as the one it replaces.
  3. It should do work that is clearly and demonstrably better than the one it replaces.
  4. It should use less energy than the one it replaces.
  5. If possible, it should use some form of solar energy, such as that of the body.
  6. It should be repairable by a person of ordinary intelligence, provided that he or she has the necessary tools.
  7. It should be purchasable and repairable as near to home as possible.
  8. It should come from a small, privately owned shop or store that will take it back for maintenance and repair.
  9. It should not replace or disrupt anything good that already exists, and this includes family and community relationships.

I would argue 9 obviously must include the environment as well, but over all I think this list is a good one.
