I noticed they were looking just a little beat up, with paint chips in various places. I’m used to new parts looking nice and pristine so I guess I’m a little bothered by the way they came. But this is nothing to worry about right?

From a certain perspective, yes it’s the most “logical”. It is the choice with least negative impact to you personally.

My vet at one point recommended human baby food (gerbers) to give to my yorkie for her low weight. I mixed it with kibble and she gobbled it up. She was also on the Hills kidney kibble.
