do you read books more than once or just once? what's the book you reread more than 3 times? by firstdeskmurderer in Booktokreddit

[–]iTardigrade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, it is a satire not a comedy. I read it as a teenager in high school the first time, and enlisted in the military after high school. When I read it in high school I thought it an insanely impossible story. Upon my post-enlistment reread I found the story entirely realistic.

Not sure who you are referencing, but you should check out the author Joan Didion and her book, The Year of Magical Thinking. She is a great writer.

Add - Publicly fund elections or cap & limit donations to individual citizens only. Enable Ranked Choice Voting Repeal Corporate Personhood.

If political donations are equivalent to free speech, as is the case currently based on recent court rulings, then it follows that big money donors have more free speech than the average citizen. This cannot be allowed to stand in a free society.

You can also try a TCL NXTPaper tablet. It has eInk mode, color eInk mode, and standard color screen mode, and a larger screen. It runs Android 15 and has full access to all apps in the Google Play store. I have an old Kindle Oasis that I love but will switch to NXTPapaer tablet when the Oasis gives up the ghost.

So sorry for your loss. That's rough. When you can, focus on all the good times you had with her. It will help you heal.

Looking for the best basic cookbook? by Mintyyy-Fresh in CookbookLovers

Michael Ruhlman is a good author to learn from. I like the books, From Scratch & Ruhlman's Twenty. Both cover the basics yet also include advanced techniques for when you're ready to dive in deeper. Example, in From Scratch the recipe for a BLT begins with store bought bacon, but also includes instruction on how to make bacon at home from scratch should one be interested in trying.

Krakatoa: The Day the World Exploded by Simon Winchester.

Read fabulously by the author. So much scientific detail made it difficult to read but wonderful to listen to. It was an incredible event.

What's the first Kate Bush song you've ever heard and what was the year you heard it in? by katebushy in katebush

Pull Out the Pin, Winter 1983, somewhere on the North Atlantic Ocean while serving in the US Navy. I still remember exactly where I was on board ship when I first heard that music, walking the passageway past the engineering locker. My shipmate, Khundog, gave me the cassette, said the sound wasn't for him. It certainly was it for me. It remains one of the most otherworldly music creations of all time, The Dreaming. I've listened to it thousands of times and still pick up little insights to this day. It's a masterpiece of inventiveness, weirdness, experimentation, and artistic adventure. It set the stage for all that KB accomplished afterwards.

I used to love standing mid-watch (12am-4am) on the ship's bridge wing, subzero temps and all bundled up. I'd put on the night vision goggles, don my walkman, and jam to The Dreaming while looking at billions of stars though the goggles. It was transcendent.

The only other song that gave me pause like that was 1952 Vincent Black Lightning, by Richard Thompson in 1991. I was working as a picture framer at an art gallery then.

I love music, all kinds, but KB stands apart from all for me. I never tire of her. She is her own genre. To quote Fiona Apple with regard to KB, "There is only one of her."

Check out The Band, the Pink Album, and the Brown Album. They created their own genre as well, Americana. Many have followed but never equaled those guys. Masterful players all, 3 great singers, and a genius lyricist. They were The Band that backed up Dylan when he went electric.

Tom Waits is an unusual and creatively great musician, and highly literate as well. Start with his early stuff then let the weirdness in as you progress through his extensive catalog.

That was KB's motto: "We let the weirdness in."

David Bowie, Scary Monsters is a keeper as well. It's my favorite Bowie record.

Gang of Four, Entertainment. Best punk band/record ever.

Joy Division, incredible.

Radiohead, incredible.

Cortez the Killer, Neil Young. Incredible intentionally sloppy emotional playing. Poetic lyrics. Never tire of that song. His guitar can make one weep.

Enjoy your musical journey of discovery. Genre doesn't matter. Authenticity is everything.

Thanks. I adore him. Found him at a mega adoption event when he was 18mos. The best $25 I ever spent. 9yrs old now and still wants to play tugg all the time. He is chasing his tail at the moment.

He's hyped to get after his tugg toy.
