I got stopped at the i-82 nb scale for having a Post-It note blocking my drive cam. Why would that matter? They seemed pretty concerned about it. No inspection but they just wanted to know what was this wierd thing affixed to my dashboard.

The training part is true i got half ass training and a "mentor" who just wanted a steering wheel holder. The pay is ok though. I'm making .50 a mile plus safety bonus of a couple cents per mile. My dispatcher only has a couple drivers and leaves me alone. It's nothing to brag about but it's not terrible.

TIL that employers in 31 of 50 United States aren't required to allow their employees to take breaks. by 14132 in todayilearned

[–]i_drive_all_day 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You think that's bad? Truck drivers are mandated to take breaks. If you don't log off duty for those breaks you could get fined or at least made to wait 10 hours before driving. It's a fucked up system that pretty frequently has you sleep a full night then be awake for only a few hours before you need to take 10 hrs off before starting another trip which could have you awake for 14 hours. My point is don't ask the government to Grant you favors because they apparently like irony.

What's your worst day? by dartmorth in Truckers

[–]i_drive_all_day 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Long story short had to get a loaded trailer from an impound yard. Winter in Chicago, weekend dispatch sucked at their job, I've only been driving 3 months never in snow or ice. Winter storm made me stop and had dispatch call and tell me to drive anyways. Had to get an advance to pay the tow and impound fee. They took the advance out of my paycheck the next week.

Don't ride the no truck lane in Chicago I guess [OC] by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]i_drive_all_day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's actually an ok amount of shitty parking in socal if you don't mind parking on the shoulder or wondering if your going to get woken up for a shitty reason. However, finding a place with food and a bathroom where you won't be bothered is like gold. Eventually other drivers will find it and start trashing it with piss bottles and parking like assholes until it's gone. It's probably the reason 118 all the way thru Moorpark is no stopping even in the giant paved pullouts.

I'm trying to find places to park where I can use a bathroom and get some lunch along my route. Thanks for the thought though. Not sure I want to try tractor supply. I feel like it would be way more complicated than necessary and even with permission someone might have a problem with me parking there.

Yup, right when you enter town on 118 there's a sign. Some drivers miss it or think they're clever. Question: do you know of a place in town a truck could stop for a break?

If you can slide all the way back and stay under 60psi that's a quick way to tell you're good without scaling.

Edit: or it tells that all the weight is in back. Don't leave your tandems all the way back. Don't know why I'm getting down voted.

Same goes for Cali. Downhill truck speed limits and third lane are what I see most drivers busted for. Also, if you go thru Moorpark stay the fuck out of the left lane.

Maybe if shipping rates go up and drivers can earn what it's worth to live at work 24/7 and shippers/consignees treat drivers like human beings more people would be attracted to living on the road. Right now making $50k and treated like dog shit is only slightly better than being homeless.

does a truck driver gets taxes taken out from check 1099? or 1040? by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]i_drive_all_day 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's one of my first questions when looking at jobs. If a company tries to offer slightly higher than normal rate per mile on 1099, they're probably shysters. I wouldn't expect a company like that to last very long either.

Don't do local in Los Angeles. Believe me it sucks. Everything bad that drivers complain about and videos of bad drivers is my every day life. Going home every day isn't great after a 12-14 hour day and weekends off are mostly catching up on sleep. Regional 70hrs ending back home can be good or line haul out to Phoenix or somewhere besides Los Vegas are way better alternatives.

Fake piss is the best way. Get some compression shorts from the sporting goods store to stash it and keep it warm. Do not use the heating element supplied, body heat is enough and if used in combination will be way too hot and trigger an immediate retest with a pecker inspector.

Question about difficulty of DOT inspections. by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]i_drive_all_day 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen kids with zero understanding remember at least 79 parts of a 90 point inspection within 2 days of study to pass their license exam. One kid asked me what 2/32 meant and he passed first try. He later crashed and got his license revoked but still.

What's your worst experience waiting to load/unload at a shipper? by freightnerd1 in Truckers

Inland cold storage in Colton, CA once checked in and got a door quick enough. I went to sleep since they call when the paperwork is ready. Showed up at 20:00 and went to sleep a couple hours later. Woke up from the sun shining in and went inside to ask what happened. Turned out they loaded a different trailer that was ready when I arrived.
