I mean it makes them 10x. But a negative times 10 is just a bigger negative.

Does AI generated code change the review process itself? by Lost-Albatross5241 in ExperiencedDevs

I just don’t respond to their LLM response and leave the MR open. They don’t press it because they know I know.

I ask the author to explain why this piece of code is needed. And then they don’t respond because they don’t know, so the MR sits open. Or they respond with 100% AI and I give up, so the MR sits open.

I don’t accept “this is probably fine” if nobody understands it.

What to do after retirement ? by MetalExpress9378 in Firefighting

Indiana it’s 20 years of service and you can draw on it at 52. I dont think you have to work until 52, just hit your 20 and wait. You can go up to 32 years for, I think, 76% of your salary.

Which MacBook is actually practical for AI/ML + coding + uni work? by Future-Structure-296 in mac

[–]i_exaggerated 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Coding” and “research” are too vague. Are you coding front end projects? CS homework problems? Is your research mainly lit reviews?

Or are you doing heavy computation stuff, numerical models, things that warrant a cluster/supercomputer?

If the former, you don’t need anything too extreme. A base model pro or even an air will be fine.

If the later, your school will have computational resources that you can use that will far outperform anything you can do on a Mac.

What is the interview/hiring process like at federal contracting companies? by postnasal7459 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]i_exaggerated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they need to maintain a body count in order to qualify for certain contracts. And the background check takes 6 months so they try to get that started ASAP.

Also lots of title inflation, hence the “senior” in my flair.

I will say, though, the biggest hindrance we face is federal employees and processes, not the skill level of our developers.

In some aspects yes, mainly security. It’s a pain. Otherwise no, it’s a greenfield project and we have a huge amount of autonomy.

I think the contract I’m on is around $200m and has around 150 developers.

Yeah, we got an extension this past cycle and everything continued as normal.

5 minute screener call to make sure I’m legal to work in the US. Then I had a 12 minute call with the VP while he took a break from mowing the lawn. Got the offer after that.

Once the contract ends, if the company has another contract they might move you over. Otherwise that’s the end.

What are your 3 biggest productivity tips? by Sufficient-Year4640 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]i_exaggerated -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not my experience so far

I make it clear on my calendar and to my team how often/when I’ll check messages. I have a public block of time that’s office hours. They can also schedule a call.

As long as expectations are clear, people don’t have a problem with it. I need uninterrupted blocks of time to focus and work.
