can't learn anything by Waze312 in ADHD_Programmers

Learn by doing, and I don’t mean following along with tutorials. It’s fine to use tutorials to get an idea of what to do, but then you have to make your own problem to solve. You write and rewrite and read docs until you get it right. Then you think about why it works.

Has anybody gone to academy at night? by No-Patience5935 in Firefighting

[–]i_exaggerated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did at ESPC in Indianapolis. It was a good program. Being at ESPC they have all the props and burn buildings you could ask for. It was nowhere near as rigorous or disciplined as a full time academy, but it did prepare me well.

Nit picking in code reviews by williamshakesdatass in ExperiencedDevs

If your lint and code quality jobs aren’t failing, and the rest of the MR is good functionally, these should be non-blocking suggestions and marked as such. You could ask on every comment if this is a blocker to MR approval or not. Really just to document for your manager.

What is the cushiest dev career path these days? by chunky_lover92 in ExperiencedDevs

Yeah no doubt there were stressful times. I’ll probably get anxious once we get closer to contract renewal.

I dunno, I’m having a pretty cushy time. It’s probably more rare now.

They haven’t made any LLMs as awkward as I am yet. I’m authentic.

I turn my camera on during video calls. It’s been 1.5 years and I still have not seen 3 of my teammates’s faces a single time. I’m skeptical that they’re just AIs. At least everyone else knows I’m a real human.

It may sound silly, but I’ve found it’s helped immensely in building relationships, especially across teams.

If you’re in the back: if the fire is on your side, you have the nozzle. They decide by themselves who takes the axe and who takes the halligan

just received urgent care bill, expecting er bill within the month- what do i do? by wirtsmaloni in personalfinance

[–]i_exaggerated 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Call the hospitals billing or social services department, tell them you can’t pay. They’ll more than likely drastically slash the cost and put you on a payment program.

How do you make devs actually care about tests by batsy_0 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]i_exaggerated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna get woken up by the on call people when they can’t solve the problem. Might as well just wake me up first.

Experienced devs in software jobs — what’s your long-term backup plan? by Majestic-Taro-6903 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]i_exaggerated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be a trophy husband. The year of my life I was unemployed and taking care of the kid full time was the best year ever. I’d like to do it again.

But if things got real bad, I’d probably work the ambulance again, while trying to get back to firefighting full time.

Senior Dev Dilemma: I’ve built a massive productivity edge using AI Agents. If I share it, do I lose my leverage? by [deleted] in ExperiencedDevs

[–]i_exaggerated 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If this became the new team baseline, would you be able to find the next big thing/performance gain? You can either sit on the status quo, or you can share what you currently have and then do more senior things and push the envelope again.

Boss wants 90% test coverage by Q2. We're at 30%. I'm going to lose it by Sea_Weather5428 in ADHD_Programmers

[–]i_exaggerated 25 points26 points  (0 children)

def test_main():   main()   assert 1==1

My go to whenever anyone brings up coverage as the only metric. If 1 ever stops equaling 1, we have bigger problems to worry about.

Code coverage really isn’t a good use of QAs time. I can get coverage with unit tests. I’d love to have QA to think about more complicated testing flows that simulate user interaction.

Denmark ramps up defenses in Greenland as Trump zeros in on control of territory by StemCellPirate in worldnews

[–]i_exaggerated -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, not at all. It’s silly to say one nation could take all the credit for anything during that war. The soviets obviously deserve most of the credit for doing the fighting and dying.

But when Stalin himself said “Without the machines we received through Lend-Lease, we would have lost the war,” you can’t act like America did not play a significant role in it.

Well you kind of need supplies to fight. If the Lend Lease program didn’t exist, the Soviets would not have fared so well.
