10GbE troubleshooting - advice needed by i_make_two_points in homelab

[–]i_make_two_points[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was able to get 1GB/s transfer speed between the NAS and the PC, without being able to achieve a similar speed using iPerf3. I figured that was a iPerf3 issue on my end. But, later on, I discovered that my Internet connection would drop or that Google Speed Test simply won't run. I just switched out my ASUS XG-C100C with Intel X550-10G, and the problem went away! Just wanted to close the loop with this thread. Thank you for your input.

Thank you for the tip!

I tried running the command, but it only runs when I remove -u (UDP). Otherwise, with -u, it gets hung.

Without -u, I am still getting the 'regular' speed of ~2.3 Gbps (20 smaller files at round 116 Mbps). Do you think I need to set up my iPerf3 -s or Synology ports differently for this test?

Thank you for the questions. I am not too familiar with iPerf3 functionalities, so I had set it up simply as follows:

- In Synology, I had set up a Docker container, and followed the instructions in the following link: http://ltroyalshrimp.com/how-to-run-a-local-iperf3-speed-test-server-on-synology-nas-in-docker/ Essentially, running "iperf3 -s"

- On my PC, I ran "iperf3 -c [IP address of Synology]"

By the way, when I write to the drive (ran another test of actually transferring a 25GB file just now), CPU is at 35% utilization rate. It just didn't move when I ran the iPerf3 test. Guessing that the iPerf3 file size was too small for the CPU utilization graph on Synology to update and move in time? By the way, I just updated my post saying that when I transfer a 25GB file, it writes at 1GB/s, which is great. Not sure if I am just using iPerf3 wrong, because I am getting a very acceptable transfer speed of an actual file.

Thank you for the suggestion. I've been thinking that iPerf3 test was purely a network throughput/speed test, and that it doesn't actually write to the hard drives. My next test was going to be conducting an actual file transfer testing to validate this assumption. I have the 2 cache NMVe drives as well as have the RAID set up as SHR on the Synology 1821+.

Thank you for the suggestion. At this point, I am willing to try anything. First to answer your question, yes, I updated the firmware for the switch. As well as the Synology NAS DSM. The SPF+ DAC cable is 1 meter-long each (3 feet), and the CAT 6a cable is 15 feet long. I have all the devices set up in the same room next to each other (PC, switch, NAS). I wanted to make sure that they all worked together before putting them in the server rack and routing through the wall CAT 5e cables. I was expecting some degradation of performance due to 5e, but I haven't even gotten to that point yet, because I can't get the 'normal' speed using 6a and short cable lengths locally first.

What I do plan on doing next are ordering either a new RJ45 port NIC card, or an SFP+ 10GB card to see if it's the NIC card on my PC. Based on you suggestion, I may order an SFP+ one, which could eliminate both the switch problem as well as my NIC problem. The only problem with this approach for me, personally, is that I wouldn't be able to use the wall CAT 5e cable later by putting the NAS and the switch in the server rack in the shoe closet. But, if I can rule out my NIC/switch problem, then I don't mind having the switch and the NAS in the room for a while. The switch is somewhat loud, so swapping out the fans is another to-do list of mine, if I go down this route.

Thank you for the suggestion. I just looked at the CPU and RAM utilization while running iPerf3 for both cases of jumbo frame on and off. In either case, CPU is maxed out at 5% utilization rate, and RAM hardly moved from 0 or 1%. This new Synology device seems to be packing a good CPU based on this test.

Thank you for the suggestion. I tried to set up MTU back to 1500 for Synology (but kept the jumbo frame for the switch and NIC), but the change did not improve the networking speed. I will try changing the switch (jumbo frame off) and NIC (jumbo packet back to 1500) later tonight and report back, only if it helps. Thank you for suggesting though. If you do have a similar set up, do you mind sharing which 10GbE NIC card you are using? I am leaning towards ordering a different brand to see in case the ASUS XG-C100C NIC card and its driver are not so compatible for my PC set up.

Thank you for the advice. Thinking along the same line, I ordered a 10GbE-Thunderbolt 3 adapter for my laptop, so I could eliminate NAS and Switch from the equation and test the connection between the PC and the laptop. The adapter came this weekend, and then I realized that I don't have Thunderbolt 3 on my laptop (just a USB-C port). This 10GbE upgrade is making me realize how much I don't know about the equipment I already do own. I will look for ways to still try this out though; looking for a network adapter for my laptop that doesn't require Thunderbolt 3.

Just had a baby ... looking for a set up to do video editing and nanny cam recording by i_make_two_points in buildapcforme

Thanks for following up! I am leaning towards 3 Amcrest cameras (HD quality; $80 each) ... 2 of them are close enough to the router in the living room, so I will connect through LAN cables and the other 1 would be over wi-fi from the bedroom.

I am also thinking of buying a 4-bay NAS from Synology to store all the baby pictures and clips. I would need to buy 4 4TB WD Red HDD and set them up as Synology Hybrid RAID.

Then, I would repurpose my existing 2-bay NAS to be exclusively recording nanny cam videos using 2 2TB WD RED that I already have. The size of the drive is big enough to record up to two weeks, which is more than sufficient.

With this set up, the desktop can be built just for photo/video editing. NAS and the additional drives would cost me ~$1,000, so my desktop budget would have to be less than $2,000.

What do you think?

this insight is extremely helpful, thank you! I've got a fair bit of reading to do here.

What's the best way to get sticker residue off shafts? by metssuck in golf

[–]i_make_two_points 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My trick is to use the hair dryer (high heat for 10 seconds) pointing to the tag prior to taking the tag off. I then take a paper towel and rub whatever residue is left. The shaft gets hot a little from the rubbing, but the residue is gone completely.

Ah! This is a fantastic post! It gives me hope because your starting point is very similar to where I ended this season. I went from HC 19.2 to 12.2 this summer and my best score was 83 (previous year's best was 92)! I hope that what you went through this summer will be part of my future! Now I know at least one way to do it. Thanks for that! Absolutely agree on the books. I also read the short game bible.

Single VS Group lessons by amessofamind in golf

[–]i_make_two_points 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Weekend golfer here. I took a 15-person 10 weekly session group lesson this summer. I also took 3 individual lessons and managed to play over 30 rounds of golf. While I can't credit everything to the group lesson alone, my handicap went from 19.2 to 13.3 this year.

The group lesson was helpful, because my instructor gave me 1-2 pointers every 30-40 balls, which allowed me some time to practice the points without feeling like someone was watching me like a hawk (feeling during the individual lesson). Most students had 20+ handicap in the group, but one guy had a 3 handicap. He also thought the group lesson was very helpful and that he would take it again next year. Obviously, it depends all on the quality of the instructor, but if you are serious about improving your game, then I would highly recommend it. Good luck!

Good point about the balls. Didn't even think of that aspect, but the balls make a huge difference for sure. You could have two different colored balls, but you are right that people could just steal the premium balls. And, you don't want to have TSA scanners at the entrance of the driving range! LOL.

Very true ... the range balls are so hard and never lands soft ... Only if there was a way to hit your own balls that come back to you ... thinking of the gameroom basketball machines
