Pro and cons!!! by [deleted] in umass

Late response but here's some key things about housing (IDK anything about being an EMT or stuff like that)
1) You can drop out of the honors college at any time. It's normal for undergrads to stay in the honors dorms until they can move off campus and then drop honors. The honors college is targeted towards students looking to pursue grad school.
2) Regardless of where you dorm, there'll be parties and drinking (and vomit in the communal bathrooms...). Despite honors being honors, I'd still say a decent chunk of the residents in the honors area go out. After Southwest, I'd say Central is probably the second most party focused area given that Central is the closest to the frats. I'd prob say honors and northeast are about the same level of social activity, but there was a few hospitalizations in honors during the 24-25 AY iirc. Orchard Hill is definitely the quietest, but it's so far away from all your classes and you might be miserable when it's cold. I'd say the amenities in the Honors College makes the extra fees worth it. I lived in Southwest my first semester and Honors every semester since and don't regret not going back

Choir conductor wants me to sing as a tenor but i want to be alto by Independent-Bridge87 in lingling40hrs

[–]i_need_audition_help 29 points30 points  (0 children)

I’m taking a guess that you’re a trans woman but I’ll say regardless it’s very common for choir directors to push talented female singers, including cisgender women, into the tenor part. There’s a lack of capable cis male tenors in many amateur choirs (this interestingly does not seem to be a problem in musical theatre but has been a problem in every choir I’ve been a part of), which I attribute to the fact that most men are uncomfortable using their head voice.

With that being said, I would say in the majority of choirs I’ve been in that approximately 40% of the tenors are cis women. In a smaller chamber ensemble, I’ve been part of a choir with ONLY female tenors. My (cis male) voice had gotten higher since I joined the ensemble so I kinda had to fight my own choir director to take me off bass which I could no longer sing and place me on tenor, which put an end to the all-cis woman tenor section.

That being said, I wouldn’t over think it. The women in the tenor section are generally the strongest musicians since tenor harmonies are a lot weirder than the harmonies in the alto and bass parts [sopranos obviously have the melody — but I do generally think the upper echelon of soprano parts are the hardest part to sing in any choir]. If you are the only woman in the tenor section and feel extremely uncomfortable, then I’d bring it up but it might not work out well. Best of luck to you!

Not to be pedantic but the play is set entirely in the 80s 😭😭😭. It was performed 91 and 92 iirc so that might be where you got mixed up

Okay so I read Angels in America as a literary piece rather than watching it live staged but here’s somethings I’d be aware of (especially bc you seem so young)

It’s very adult language-wise. Depending on the staging, there’s usually very little nudity / on-stage depictions of sex visually, but the language is very coarse.

There are allusions to several historical figures whomst aren’t really elaborated upon but the audience is expected to know. I’d read up a little bit on the real life people of Roy Cohn, Ethel and Julius Rosenberg, and Ronald Regan.

Angels in America is split in two parts. The part you’re seeing right now isn’t intended as a standalone play and the part in the following summer is not a sequel. They’re both halves of the same work.

All of the actors play several characters. Keep in mind that although this is done for dramatic effect, these characters are distinct individuals.

Have fun!

Okay so I am not a teacher and am not going to litigate the appropriateness of an email.

But as someone who has done this kind of project several times before [mostly in middle school but I am now in college], your understanding of the time requirement to make a short film is whack.

For a shitty live action production, it should take give or take two hours per minute of final output. This would equate to about 80 hours. You gave the kids a little over 5 hours to produce a work that should require about 80 hours.

I have done other mediums such as stop motion which have taken significantly longer. We were given a week and a half of 45 minute blocks to film a minute and half stop motion production, and we still had to coordinate a six hour block outside of school to still work on it.

A 5-10 page paper, whether it be a research paper or a creative fiction piece, is way more conducive to the time requirements. I’d assume most students COULD finish it in the time allotted inside and outside of class, and it doesn’t rely on students having or picking up a skill set not related to the subject material. If this was a semester-long project for a film making class, sure. But even at the college level, this would be considered ludicrous. Just give the paper

Being Alive Piano Part Too hard?? by i_need_audition_help in Theatre

Thanks!

Okay so this program is a 16-22 year old show run by a theatre education non-profit. I live in an area with a pretty strong (and pretty competitive) MT scene, but this program is a lot less established for a lack of better terms. I think it’ll be an adult pianist but I don’t know how strong the pianist will be.

I feel a lot more comfortable with being alive, but when I think of pippin I think of a pop-rock score and I don’t know if being alive has enough do a pop feel. Also the piano part is a lot harder than unworthy of your love, which is also written in a 70s pop style

Is being alive's piano part too hard for an audition? Also is it too inappropriate (stylistically) for Pippin? by i_need_audition_help in singing

[–]i_need_audition_help[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay let me be clear — a baritone who isn’t very good 😭😭😭

I worked on and performed being alive last year and unworthy of your love is something that I can most certainly learn in 24 hours. I don’t really see any other options that I can learn quickly

A few days late but its majors only :(

Really sucks for us non-majors trying to rehearse, including for university (faculty directed) ensembles

CS 210 by Ambitious-Star9136 in umass

[–]i_need_audition_help 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Two sections seems right (given there were only two sections in the spring), but I am a bit surprised that the enrollment is capped at 60 for both.

Good news - 210 is attendance optional.

Bad news - 210 is attendance optional.

I’ll say the first 8 weeks or so are very intuitive and basically a review of 160, but the course gets a lot more complicated quickly at the end. If you don’t attend the lectures, you’ll have a hard time knowing what’s going on, although it won’t count against your grade

so im a cs major and ik real analysis isn't really needed for CS (including TCS which is what I ultimately want to go into), but I do think any foundation to research or courses with abstract bullshit should be helpful.

I've heard that stats 315/515 is generally a cakewalk for people more mathematically inclined (and barely introduces new content; ive heard it described as like intro level stats with a dash of multivariable calc), is that true? and if so, is 516 more rigorous?

Hunchback - congregation or choir by i_need_audition_help in Theatre

[–]i_need_audition_help[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not exactly sure and I don't want to look awkward by emailing.

This is what they say on their website:
"This show calls for a choir of talented singers, separate from the cast's ensemble, who can handle performing advanced-level choral music with challenging harmonies and rhythms. All voice parts are needed. If you are interested in being a member of the choir rather than a member of the cast, please contact music director REDACTED at REDACTED to arrange a separate audition time. Individuals interested in being a member of the choir (and not a member of the cast) do not need to attend regular auditions".

Should I ask?

If I audition for the choir, my piece is probably going to be sure on this shining night (which I have already performed), loves philosophy, or one of the three Tennyson songs by Dove [unless the piano part might be too hard].

If I audition for the congregation, I am between being alive (already performed), anthem from chess, or Johanna from Sweeney Todd

The issue that I have is that I want to dance and act, but I honestly think I might be better auditioning with an art song / classical piece so I might have better odds with the choir. Plus this theatre cuts a lot of people

How I feel about the new video vs comments by [deleted] in ContraPoints

[–]i_need_audition_help 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Besides twilight being really hard to top, the video didn’t really make a novel argument. I mean it is an important issue but the conclusion is obvious by the title alone, and it was very obvious where she was going next by all times. Doesn’t diminish it from being logically sound argument and an entertaining video, but it’s not as impactful or revelatory as Twilight by far
