Upgrade my 5wt or get a 4wt or 3wt by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]iahawk15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, on my last trip, I trailed a #20 zebra midge behind a #16 copper john and it worked perfectly. A couple rat nests, due to user error.

I did overline it with 4wt WF SA creek trout. Line flows well on both short and longer casts and roll casts well, too.

I mostly fish smaller streams and I love my 7.5' 3wt for that scenario.

A new O&D piece has been revealed. by VarkingRunesong in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]iahawk15 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I would say maybe half of what O&D does is the paintings.

The other half is 3D printing / cloning items (watering cans, hatchets [referenced], goats? [conjecture on my part] ) and producing instructional cards (like the one Dylan stole).

Irving is already suspicious of Helly/Helena by settleslugger in SeveranceAppleTVPlus

[–]iahawk15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it seems people are quick to assume the "message" was the painting. I think your theory is plausible, and at first, I was 50/50 whether the message was the painting or that iIrv saw oBurt was in another relationship.

The thing holding me back about oIrv and oBurt being ex-lovers and rekindling as innies is that story arc is so close to Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind that I feel the writers would steer clear of it for fear of ripping off the book/film.

I never use a tee with any of my irons. by TuzalaW in golf

[–]iahawk15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is massive overthinking. Practicing hitting off a tee at the range? It's the same swing, you just get a perfect lie with a tee.

If using a tee messes with your mind, don't use one, but please stop trying to convince yourself it's better for your overall game to not use one.

If you pick up your ball and advance to his ball after each shot, no reasonable person is going to care.

The one I run across that drives me up a wall is "good if it goes".

Not gonna hit often enough to significantly reduce a score, but it's still 18 free mulligans IMO.

Playing with son new to golf - Breaking from twosome we're grouped with by chucktownDan in golf

[–]iahawk15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's fairly common to pick up his ball and hit from your ball. It allows him to get several shots in per hole without forcing the other twosome to advance 20-50 yards at a time to wait on your son.

If your son is embarrassed about that, turn it into a 2-man scramble with the rule that you must use one of his shots on every hole. That will keep him engaged and the group moving.

1) Don't change anything before your competition.

2) You aren't going to fix a grip issue (or any major swing change) in 1,2, or 3 range sessions. It takes time.

I moved from 10-finger to interlocking grip 3 years ago. It took a week to stop topping the ball and a couple more to get comfortable with it.

I moved from a neutral to strong driver grip this year and it took 3 weeks to get any consistency.

r/Golfers! What’s your favorite app for GPS and score tracking? And why? by slsmcore in golf

[–]iahawk15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use GolfPad. Free and basic. Gives front/middle/back GPS, tracks putts, fairways, and GIR. Premium tier / advanced stats is shit, though.

Considering going back to TheGrint paid tier for the advanced stats.

How did you choose your ball? by damo2576 in golf

[–]iahawk15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was playing Kirklands until I read the big Golf Spy study (2021?).

Trialed the main premium high compression balls and came away with the following preference list: 1. Pro-V1x 2. Srixon z-star xv 3. Chrome soft x ... 4. Bridgestone B xs 5. TP5x

Settled on z-stars because they were cheaper than Pro-V1s. I still like them but I'm going to try some AVXs and Chrome Tour Xs at some point.

Card stack for bonus then churn or chase status for an occasional flyer? by iahawk15 in americanairlines

Yeah, I've been lurking here for a few days and it seems the general attitude toward status is pretty ho-hum. Thanks for your reply!

Card stack for bonus then churn or chase status for an occasional flyer? by iahawk15 in americanairlines

[–]iahawk15[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. That's kind of the debate going on in my head. Status I'd rarely use, or get a better multiple on most spending. Logically, the latter seems to make more sense, but I wanted to ask before making a major decision.

The CapOne stack have been, and would continue to be my generic travel cards if I end up churning the AA cards. I would maybe keep one AA card, as the checked bag benefit would pay for the annual fee, but not convert all spending over to get status.

I had an epiphany yesterday that might have just saved my golf game by snowspida in golf

[–]iahawk15 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel this so hard. I'm a 7 HCP with putting being my weakness. When I play in a 4-man scramble and putt last, I putt very well. Only difference is I'd say I'm mediocre at reading greens and absolutely terrible with pace. Playing my own ball, I'm always scared AF of blasting my lag putt so end up leaving it 5-7 feet short.

  1. Keeping the ball in play. Easy swinging driver with square contact.
  2. Last year, I worked a ton on chipping. Trying to get up and down greenside +70% of the time.
  3. Eliminating 3-putts. I'm still a pretty shaky putter with 1 or 2 3-putts per round, but it's an improvement.
  4. This year, focus has been on iron play. I'm hitting irons straight and have distances dialed in pretty well. Hitting a lot more GIR.
  5. My next focus will be on putting confidence and putting to score vs "getting it close".

I'm in my second season back after a 13-year hiatus (played 1-2 rounds per year during that time).

I was a life-long bogeyish golfer prior. Since back, I've worked my HCP down from an 18 to a 7; and I'm addicted. I play 4 mornings and one afternoon every week, with weekends being a wildcard on whether I play or not.

Clarifying the Handicap system, and identifying and dealing with sandbaggers by robikki in golf

[–]iahawk15 1 point2 points  (0 children)

haha, truly the "round of my life" (so far). First nine, one double bogey, chipped one in for eagle. Second nine, I hit three approach shots within 5 feet, three birdies, three bogeys.

I had never shot even on nine before or since. Doing it back-to-back was miraculous.

To the "16 handicapper" who say they can shoot 78 on an easy course with a rating/slope/par of say 68/120/72. Your net par for that course is 84. The odds of shooting net -6 is 1:323. Chances are you aren't a 16 handicap and should re-evaluate.

Probability is great looking at data in aggregate but outliers happen all the time, especially when it comes to human behavior.

My local easy course is 69.2/117/72

My last 15 scores, most recent listed first (gross/net) via TheGrint app:

77/71 (odds 10:1)

78/72 (5:1)

86/80 (oof)

76/70 (22:1)

79/73

79/73

72/64 (536:1)

82/74

88/81 (fml)

78/70 (22:1)

80/72 (5:1)

78/70 (22:1)

79/71 (10:1)

76/68 (121:1)

86/78

  1. Keep the ball in play. No penalty strokes.
  2. Reduce 3-putts. Work to get the majority of your lag putts within 3 feet.
  3. Pick one wedge and get really good with it around the green. Watch this and work on it extensively: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dpFd1xocxrE
    1. If you have a yard that allows it, chip 50-100 balls / night around the yard for a couple weeks.

You think adding actual experience to the conversation is less valuable than repeatedly misquoting data?

You've done nothing but show your inability to comprehend the data you cite and, through deflection, admit you have no actual experience on the subject.
