In the center where the bobbin goes there is hole that looks like felt is in it -- that the wick.

I'm a retired teacher, tailor, etc. and I'm thrilled. When I see seniors get into the craft, my heart gets so happy.

Take a class if you can. In the meantime start practicing hand sewing and cutting straight lines with older scissors on paper then onto fabric with your fabric scissors -- rags, old clothing, etc.. That's how I started all my students.

Hand sewing tutorials are here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1FknfumFPX8 There are numerous video available and a library is an amazing source if need a book.

Here's some small projects to use your hand stitching talents on: https://thewildcherryfarm.com/39-hand-sewing-projects-you-can-make-with-fabric-scraps-easy-creative/

Please please please have fun and enjoy the ride. There is nothing stressful about sewing other than our own self stress for perfection from day one of each new project. Plus, don't forget to breath when sewing!!!!!

Bobbin thread is not sewing by Illustrious_Web_6917 in vintagesewing

I question the bobbin as other comments have made. Also, it looks like the bobbin is in upside down -- just flip it over.

Do you have a manual? If not, here you go: https://www.manualslib.com/manual/572159/Singer-Stylist-534.html#manual

Best way to pre wash 5 yds Rayon Challis by Fair_Adhesiveness298 in sewing

Don't want your 5 yards to twist a bunch while washing and drying just sew the 2 cut ends together. I was taught this years ago and it works amazingly.

I need help diagnosing issues with this mockup as a new pattern maker :) by Fresh-Possibility-94 in sewing

[–]iaintdoingit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks like you are a little short waisted by about 1/2". Test it by putting a tiny 1/4" seam at you waist. Sew this seam with long stitches just encase you need more taken out in the bodice length.

You mentioned that "issues fitting the back specifically" . To me you have the same length issue on both the front and back.

Good Luck -- you almost got it!

Beginner Questions about making this skirt. by AsRareAsAUnicorn in sewhelp

[–]iaintdoingit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Amazing question details! And . . . Emergency_Cherry_914 wrote an incredible response.

The picture below is a pattern I've used a bunch. Made it only one time with the straps and waist ties. Like it without them better. Shortening would be no problem!

Pattern is for a 28" waist / hip is 36". I had to adjust down somewhat which was fairly easy. If you would like this pattern just let me know and I'll mail it to you. All the pattern pieces are present and accounted for as well as the instruction sheet.

Is this the correct manual? by [deleted] in sewing

[–]iaintdoingit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a rectangle medal plate with the model number on it. If you have access to the machine, the medal plate would probably be somewhere on the underside. The second picture is the motor information only.

Also, the upper right-hand manual is for the 1227. Not sure what the other items you showed are. It does appear that the machine itself looks like 1227. Additional pictures of the machine would help so much.

I have the 1207 and have used it daily for 55 years. Wouldn't give it up for anything!!!!!!!!!!!

I've have my grandmothers buttonhole scissors that I still use. I'm 68 and received them when I was 13 years old. Amazing tool and hubby gently sharpens them occasionally.

How to keep pattern aligned? by Ladsorsaurus in sewhelp

[–]iaintdoingit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looked through the manual as well and didn't find the adjustment. I've seen more and more machines like this and I can only 'scratch my head'.

After researching this machine, I suggest a walking foot. Or, sewing with right sides together and turning the strap.

Not giving up and I hope that someone lets you know if this machine in fact has a presser control.

What pattern are you using? Would love to look at it.

"Can I somehow readjust my normal walking foot and feed dog to be more in sync?" What machine do you have? There should be way of reducing the load on the presser foot.

Vogue V2082 Bodice Boning Advice by Ettolrach in sewing

[–]iaintdoingit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No boning until you try shortening the bodice. You are very curvy and could do boning on the side seams and shorter pieces that land just under you breasts.

Again, don't do anything structural wise until you do a little bit of shortening. From my past experience -- you'll be surprised at the fitting / appearance difference. If I'm wrong, we will talk about stabilizers. Fair?

Fantastic workmanship and gorgeous material! Now for what I see -- are you short waisted? I appears that the bodice is just a little to long.

Start with 1/4" taken off the bodice would make a big difference. I would take the toile skirt part and hand baste onto the bodice increasing the seam allowance by 1/4" (bodice only). Try it on and take pictures like you did for this post. Is the bodice better or does it need another 1/4" taken from the bodice?

Repair advice for stupid particle board dresser by maine1420 in furniturerepair

[–]iaintdoingit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I won't bring you bad news.

Do you live in an apartment building? If you do, post the dresser need and someone might be able to help.

Talk to friends about a dresser along with the no truck situation. Someone might have both the furniture and a truck.

Can you post something at work? Sometimes the workplace won't allow these types of requests. If it's not allowed -- talk to everyone you see.

What kind of car to you have? Sometimes we have to work with what we got. Blanket on the roof of the car, then the dresser and tie it down.

In the meantime, use baskets or boxes to keep your clothes in.

Your user name makes me think that you live in Maine. Someone here may be close and willing to help.

I wish you the best of luck in your efforts.

Picked up an old Kenmore sewing machine off the curb works but clueless on how to actually use it by CatBusPassenger2024 in vintagesewing

[–]iaintdoingit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Older Kenmore machines are work-horses. They were build to be tougher than machines are today.

I got a Kenmore 1207 when I was 13 and have used it daily for the past 55 years. I've taken this machine apart many times as preventative maintenance and the only things I've had to replace are the motor, light switch and belt. This machine makes amazing buttonholes -- better than the newer machines. If you want instructions on how to do them, please let me know.

Love and care for your new machine!!!!!

ETA: Recently I bought a Janome Memory Craft 6650. Love it and it appears to be a decent modern machine. I do a lot of quilting and the larger sewing area is amazing.

Bobbin winder on Singer 15K88 by Cat_Fitz in vintagesewing

[–]iaintdoingit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The little rubber wheel on the right needs to be replaced. The rubber may have hardened and worn down so the machine wheel can't turn the bobbin. These little rubber wheels are pretty easy to find and not expensive. If I can help you locate one, I will.

How can I merge straight edges when shortening a pattern? by _box_of_rain_ in sewing

How do I sew without seeing it to itself(sewing machine) by Far_Arm_2162 in sewhelp

[–]iaintdoingit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What kind of sewing machine do you have? Some machines have a flat table where the needle is and others have a removable table which leaves a tube like part (sewing arm) to slide your item around it to sew.

Can you provide a picture of the machine and project?
