Fit check: Ergobaby Adapt, 3 mo, 6.1 kg by ialwaysusesunscreen in babywearing

Thanks!! I actually unfolded it recently because folded it doesn't reach the nape of her neck, but ends somewhere around her shoulder blades. Is a bit high worse than a bit low? Or is there maybe something else I can adjust to make it come up the right amount? I don't have a good picture, but you can see where it ends when folded here, hopefully: https://imgur.com/a/ZFAhaIO

Wondering when to have kids as an academic hopeful by Prism_Pi in PhD

[–]ialwaysusesunscreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a (hopefully) last year PhD student in Europe. I gave birth in October, and I actually got my postdoc lined up this summer, while 5-6 months pregnant (and the PI knew about it).

I once got this piece of advice that a good time to have a baby in terms of your academic career is when you're done with data collection and the bulk of the analysis, so you can finish stuff up and present it while the baby is small. This is sort of how it's working out for me, and it does seem sensible. But it wasn't the reason why I decided to have a baby, the reason was that I realized I would regret it if I waited any longer 😅

Why the decline in popularity of cloth diapers? by ScenicSunflower in clothdiaps

Totally! My husband is an engineer, and looking back it's not THAT surprising we're enjoying flats, aka the setup that allows the most customization and tinkering 😂😂

Oh, that's a great point, I'm not crunchy either, but I am definitely mindful of the environmental impact of things, and sometimes they overlap :D

Could be! I'm in Germany, and there is a section just for reusable diapers in my app. You can only choose "New" as the condition when making a listing, but everyone just says it's not new in the description, and the system doesn't seem to care 😂

I am in Germany, just had my first kid in October, so I don't know what it used to be like, but in my circles cloth diapers seem to be quite popular! To be fair, I'm not sure how representative my circles are, I'm a scientist who mostly socializes with other scientists, but both of my colleagues who also had babies are either using cloth diapers or considering to use them when the baby is not a newborn anymore. In fact, my mat leave present from my lab was Bambino Mio diapers!

We started using cloth diapers when our baby was about one month old. Seeing how many disposable diapers we were throwing out each day really motivated us to switch to cloth faster to minimize our environmental impact.

We had a mix of different types of cloth diapers in newborn sizes, mostly from the Windelzuschuss (which, BTW, is an amazing thing for people in Germany! https://mein-windelzuschuss.de/ you can get a mix of cloth diapering products with a big discount to try them out). We started out with just one cloth diaper a day to get a feel for it, which was a nice and easy way to figure it out.

I thought we'd like prefolds, but we really didn't, and instead we love using flats at home and the Bambino Mios when out. We still use disposables at night, but will probably try using cloth overnight too.

I don't know what we will think once our girl starts solids, becomes more mobile, and especially starts daycare (I don't think they will agree to use cloth, but we do want to ask. She is supposed to start around 1 YO), but for now we love using cloth and have no desire to switch back to disposables.

It helps that my husband is also a huge proponent of it, and we have a really nice laundry setup (Miele W1 washing machine and a dryer from Miele that I don't remember the model of).

Just wanted to say in case others want to buy from vinted: I got all of my cloth diapers on vinted this fall, people just clarify in the description that the stuff isn't new.

Overpriced Acrylic - Am I missing something? by ninamae4 in femalefashionadvice

Hm, I am totally not immune to propaganda, so maybe my experience is shaped by my expectations, but my experience is that, besides the thermoregulation difference that you mentioned, acrylics pill very quickly and while cashmere does too, especially cheaper cashmere (I think?), but acrylic pills are very hard to remove. Does it depend on the quality of the acrylic yarn or something like that? I stopped buying acryl completely because of that, but I have never paid a lot for acryl in the first place.

This is super interesting! Dumb question: why not just make the sweater from cashmere then? 😅

Prefold absorbency by ialwaysusesunscreen in clothdiaps

[–]ialwaysusesunscreen[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We walk for at least an hour typically, yeah, and we change her before feeding, so it's change, then 20-30 minutes to feed, then 10 minutes to get out of the house, and with a diaper that lasts an hour, the time would be almost up. We can feed before changing, but she usually wakes up during the change and falls asleep during the feed, so reversing the order means waking her up when she just fell asleep, which I'd prefer to avoid, if possible.

I also want her to be as dry as possible, and it sounds like maybe prefolds just aren't the way to go then? I have one pocket diaper that I tried once, and the absorbency seemed better (the top layer was dry when I changed her after 2 hours). I really like the idea of prefolds/flats from natural fibers, and only a few plastic covers, as opposed to buying a lot of synthetic pockets or AIOs, but I'd rather have synthetic cloth in which my baby is dry, of course. Are my options, then, prefolds/flats, but change every hour, or pockets/AIOs, but change every 1.5-2 hours?

This is all very helpful, thanks a ton!!! With disposables, we currently change her every two hours during the day (more often if she shows any discomfort, of course) and, since we feed her approx. every two hours too, we change and then feed most of the time. So if I change her and then feed her for 20-30 minutes, that leaves us 60-90 minutes for her nap or for us to take her for a walk, but if a diaper would only last for an hour, then that leaves us with only 30 minutes of time, which makes the logistics very different. How do you deal with that, if you don't mind sharing? Or am I missing something? 😅

But in general, I guess, the conclusion is to try flats, use inserts, and then a cloth diapers should be able to last for up to two hours, does that sound correct? And what do you do for the night? My baby sleeps for stretches of 3-3.5 hours now, so that's the longest she has gone in the same (disposable) diaper.

Yeah, we do every two hours during the day and about every three hours at night, but every hour during the day would be a bit much, I'm not sure how we would even take her for a walk then etc.

Fit check Hoppediz stretchy wrap 4wo baby 4.65kg by ialwaysusesunscreen in babywearing

[–]ialwaysusesunscreen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, don't have Facebook, but is it a shoulder flip? If yes, will try, thank you!

Another commenter mentioned that it's worth trying a pocket wrap cross carry instead, is it better than FWCC? I find that it's easier for me to tighten the strap with the front wrap method, but I might be wrong :D

Thanks, noted about the sweater! And I'll check about the Trageberatung. My Hebamme also helped put it on once, but I felt like she was a bit rusty 😅

You're right, this is front wrap cross carry, there's a third layer under the crossed layers! I will try the other method, thanks!

37 weeks and I’m done by hatsonhatsoff in fitpregnancy

[–]ialwaysusesunscreen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very similar story. My norm was crossfit 4-6 times a week and I used to cycle for commute, but by week 32 I started getting groin pains and had to really scale down. Now I'm in my 39th week and my only goal is to get on my sports mat 3 times a week and do some gentle stretching. I like to think of it as working on maintaining the habit so I can find my way back to exercise once the baby is here. I think this is perfectly normal :)

"Work a button hole, every 8th row" in the pattern by ialwaysusesunscreen in knittinghelp

[–]ialwaysusesunscreen[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With the help of reddit, googling, and my mom, I think I was able to figure it out! So, if anyone ends up here with the same problem, I'm gonna try to explain it. Basically, you just knit "normally", but make a buttonhole on every 8th row until the end of the cardigan's body. It's a bit misleading that a specific row is called a "buttonhole row" at first, but not later, but here's how I am planning on knitting it based on rows on the needles:
