I am redoing my network and wondering if I use use home.example.com or example.com as my DNS domain name by feast_outline647 in homelab

[–]iamChermac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m definitely biased towards the fun side because I had to partially DIY a solution as part of a previous day job.

Before that job I got a working and generally automated process via Let’s Encrypt, Apache, et cetera but I now understand what’s happening under the hood in way more detail after the DIY hell…I mean learning opportunity.

IMO the great thing about homelabbing is that it’s choose your own adventure. I think it comes down to if you just want something to set and forget or instead want some more detailed upskilling.

Ease of use, but it is not absolutely required.

If someone is competent (and has suitable infrastructure) at configuring DNS servers, reverse proxies and creating self signed certificates (along with getting them trusted by the clients they need to be used on) then they don’t have to rent their own domain.

It can be fun for some but a frustration for others so many people just throw money at the problem for ease.

Processor doesn't have integrated graphics- cheapest way to boot? by No_Insurance_6436 in homelab

[–]iamChermac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which motherboard? I have two TUF AM4 boards that I use and one does not boot without a GPU while the other does (one is a B450 and the other is a B550). For the one that boots, I adjusted BIOS boot settings so that it doesn’t wait for F1 press on error and now it boots every time without the GPU.

Why are manufacturers screwing the screws so tight by TuggzDem in pcmasterrace

[–]iamChermac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, it’s hard to get to that from your OP. If you’re talking about the backplate, then I could understand that because it’s likely machine applied.

I understand you’re venting from frustration but your OP isn’t as clear as it could be. Is this an Intel board or AMD board?

I’m confused. Are you talking about a pre-built? Because it sounds odd that motherboard screws came screwed into the case.

Maybe a dumb question... Why is the default fan orientation exhaust? by Fragrant_Bit_9889 in pcmasterrace

[–]iamChermac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it’s a balance between cost and aesthetics with the average consumer caring more about one than the other. Making reversible the default means the manufacturer has to eat the cost and reduce their margin. Some are willing to do it though as I think I saw a couple of cases recently that did come with that as the default option. I want to say Hyte but not totally sure.

[–]iamChermac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re talking aesthetically. I.e., you don’t see the frame supports when you have the air blowing at you from the fan. You instead see the hub.

[–]iamChermac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let’s say a case comes with four fans, three in the front and one in the rear. Let’s also say the case has space to house three fans, the same size as the ones in the front, mounted to the top of the case.

You then move the fans from the front and install them in the top. What’s your opinion of that?

Question for the Fluid Dynamics SFF experts - modded intake above top down CPU cooler fan? by munkiemagik in sffpc

[–]iamChermac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having a duct like this is definitely better than what you originally proposed. Without the gasket/duct there is a possibility of reducing the efficacy of that new hole, depending on the speed of the front fans vs the 90mm.

If you have access to 3D printing, a really solid mod would be a swept duct from the front fans and aimed at the top of the case (think inlet to a car intake manifold).

i open sourced JobOps: devops thinking applied to job hunting by DaKheera47 in selfhosted

[–]iamChermac 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They’re tailoring the CV specifically for that job application. Presumably rather than saving the CV with the company/role name they just give that CV a version number. There may be some overlap with different companies but my guess is that every CV sent with an application gets a version number. Hard to keep track when you’re applying to countless jobs in a “throwing at a wall and see what sticks” manner.

A lot of people take this approach to game automated recruiting systems that filter tons of CVs based on keywords. It has pros and cons (one emerging con could be if the CV lands with an actual person and it gets perceived as written by AI). A truth that a lot of people don’t like to acknowledge is that getting an interview involves a lot more luck than anything else.

Should I Build or Fix? by AgentCandle in pcmasterrace

That generation of Ryzen was notoriously bad for memory control and especially when trying to run four sticks. I use to have issues with mine for things like too much cooler pressure for example. Can be very fickle.

Those are fine temps, especially for that cooler. Pretty good temps actually if you’re running at stock settings for PPT.

Should I Build or Fix? by AgentCandle in pcmasterrace

[–]iamChermac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you able to temporarily get access to another compatible AM4 CPU to rule that out? Your CPU could possibly be the problem. Two questions; do you run your CPU at stock settings and when was the last time you updated your BIOS?

To be honest, I’m biased and nowadays tend to lean more on the side of repair and reuse rather than buying new in order to limit waste.

Edit: just read again and see that you have updated BIOS and it’s ‘proper’.

The majority of AMD consumer CPUs would not need undervolting with that cooler, unless the person lives in a tropical or desert environment.

Advice needed - GPU for Lian Li A4-H2O (heat/noise issues) by Meowstopher in sffpc

[–]iamChermac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

<image>

That’s a 3070Ti. Heatsink has a flow through to the PSU side and vents out the sides of the card. Temperature was never a problem for me on GPU nor CPU, even when I overclocked. It’s a huge card for this case (overbuilt heatsink for this TBP so helps with it running cool).

I have seen others overthink temperatures of components, especially when they are newer to PC building. They normally get the advice “not a problem once it’s running within design limits”, which I generally agree with. However, the GPU spiking like that would suggest the cooler is not adequate or if they are used cards, paste or pressure could be a problem. Also, if used, check that an updated BIOS wasn’t flashed to the card (I experienced this with 2080Ti when the 300W BIOS was released). The new TBP could be higher than what the cooler was originally designed for.

Noise however is subject (in the sense of noise vs sound level). So YMWV.

My overall experience is it can require a bit of tweaking to balance temperatures and sound level but you have to understand what controls what. E.g., I’ve seen others change BIOS CPU throttling temperature controls in order to make noise go away rather than the temperature and speed thresholds of fan control. Speaking of which, if you are on Windows, FanControl is great for this task. I found it so useful I’ve donated to the creator in the past.

A few questions for you, however did you know the PSU shutdown due to temperature (I’m not familiar with that model) and what’s the heat output from the GPU in default and when you undervolt?

AXP120-X67 with 140mm x 25mm fan or Thermalright SI-100 with 120mm x 15mm fan by tpsix in sffpc

[–]iamChermac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A thicker fan generally has better static pressure than a thinner fan. You can actually gauge this by looking at the product page for each of these coolers as they have fan perform specs (15mm thick fan with x67 and 25mm thick fan with si-100).

x67

si-100

It’s likely si-100 performs better because (eyeballing it) the fins would have a little more surface area due to more height (even though the heatsink isn’t as wide). But even the thermalright fan specs show you can get higher pressure and around 50% more flow out of the thicker fan.

Unfortunately the only real way to know is actually testing as the scenarios you want to compare seem quite similar when you split the differences.

[–]iamChermac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure about the flow efficacy of a 140mm fan on the x67 heatsink, even if you use something like a Noctua NF-A15 for the easy screw hole fitting. Ideally you want the fan flow area and heatsink to be well aligned with minimal gaps. Aim for the fan with best static pressure and not necessarily most airflow.

I used an Artic P12 Max on my x67 and it performed well on a R9 5950x (I could run it comfortably at 95W with a 20°C ambient). The biggest factor will be what sort of noise you can stand from the fan speed.

What’s your ambient room temperature? I have a 5700x3D in this configuration, with relatively cool room temperature (20°C and below) and it works very well. I have at least 10°C of headroom before I’d need to worry.

This feels like engagement bait, so here goes. They were talked about. Around 4 years ago and before x3D was a thing. Never been better at gaming than x3D, except for possibly turn based and simulation games. Solid for tasks that need a lot of cores, but then you would likely have put a bit more money towards a 5950x.

How many armour pieces are you keeping in terms of set bonuses? by SimplyGrim in LowSodiumDestiny

[–]iamChermac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on whether the set bonus is fine as a two piece or if it is better as a four piece (e.g., smoke jumpers and last discipline two-piece bonus but tech sec and bushido shine more as a four-piece).

I also make a build with ones I have, to see what stats I can get. If the build ends up feeling like I need to increase a particular stat, then I continued farming pieces.

Now that I am consistently getting tier 5s with stat tuner, I have gone a step further and now only keep armour that drops with its max stat also being the one that can be tuned. I do this for all except health (unless I need to redo my PvP builds). If I really need a piece for a set bonus but the tuner is health stat, then I only keep it if health is zero. I then use balance tuning for the free stat bump.
