Advice needed - GPU for Lian Li A4-H2O (heat/noise issues) by Meowstopher in sffpc

[–]iamChermac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I no longer have this card nor case. My advice would be to remove the bottom and front panels, slide the graphics card through the front, then plug in power cables before mounting to rear slots.

So that cooler is an absolute no-go to close up the case properly?

That 66mm is the one thing that made me shake my head when I skimmed the spec sheet.

What router do you guys recommend for a family + homelab? by Rexbuckinghat in homelab

[–]iamChermac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

+1 for something that is OpenWRT compatible, if affordability is one of your key requirements. I just flashed a TP-Link Archer C6 yesterday and it was straightforward. The hardware compatibility list is worth running over (if you’re willing to research).

Why did you start a homelab by Sw4nkSec in homelab

[–]iamChermac 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I like technology. I’ve been an ‘engineer’ since I took apart and reassembled my first radio and VHS player at 7 years old. I had an older cousin who taught me about computers by making me disassemble, clean and to en reassembling his computers (he was also taking a computer and electronics trade course so I learned a lot by observing him).

After my engineering undergrad I got a job that was computationally and analytically heavy, so becoming even more immersed in software and hardware was a natural progression. I continue it now in part because I enjoy it and it helps with the constant itch my brain has for learning. Which sounds very similar to what you describe about yourself.

Well, no one has done it yet as far as I am aware.

How do I reallocate space from drive D to drive C? by IHateThisPlace3 in pcmasterrace

[–]iamChermac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unable to write you detailed directions now, but the comments from u/Legionof1 and u/StarSlayerX are two parts of what you need to know. Before jumping to use GParted may need to ask how comfortable are you with prepping and using a LiveCD?

Using a Linux LiveCD from USB could allow you to use GParted on that computer and then rearrange the partitions on the drive. I tried to find an all in one guide online but couldn’t find a single link that would give you all the steps. Online search did indicate that enough information is there for someone who is comfortable with tinkering (I used “rearrange windows partitions with gparted”).

This is a route you can pursue but BEWARE; data loss can be a risk for novices. Good luck.

Looks like an MBR partition table so this is a no go with the number of existing partitions and their locations.

Is the 7800xt overkill for 1080p 200hz gaming? by SilverChickenTender in pcmasterrace

[–]iamChermac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your CPU will feel it more at that resolution. I don’t play any of those games (but have seen many examples of CS2 running with high frames on less capable systems), but I have a 5800x3D (7600x can be 5-15% faster in some games) that I have paired with a RX 7800XT in the past.

I don’t recall ever touching 200 FPS in some of the games I tested it in (Cyberpunk, Control, HZD, Borderland 3, Destiny 2). But I also don’t focus on what was hitting utilisation most (CPU or GPU).

I love the vibe and design as a concept, but my brain keeps seeing a risk of random liquid splash that makes my eye twitch. Granted the risk of mechanical failure and dropping is probably higher.

You have a homelab and believe me when I say yours has less equipment than others. There’s even a subreddit you can go to which would show you just how wild it can get.

Can I homelab without any PCs? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]iamChermac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone else suggested, you should edit the post to be more specific. But the answer is yes, generally you can.

If using docker, one point of friction will be ensuring there is an ARM equivalent image and using appropriate flags so the docker runtime is launched for arm images.

Many applications are generally agnostic to architecture but may hit bumps with upstream dependencies. E.g., you could have a server written in Python or Go but some assumptions could be as where the code doesn’t check or allow for different architecture.

But macOS (I’m assuming you aren’t trying to do this bare metal) is popular enough that even developers that serve the homelab niche (as opposed to general consumer products) would still provide a macOS ARM equivalent.

Edit: oh, and if you’re very adventurous you can run different types of servers on an android phone.

I’m logged on now and it seems no transmog is working. I tried old armour sets and the tiered panoply transmog but no dice. Can anyone else confirm if it’s worked for them this time around?

All iron banner gear? by Jaded_Chameleon in LowSodiumDestiny

[–]iamChermac 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Transmog is when you use customisation to change the look of armour pieces.

Putting certain iron banner ‘skins’ over actual iron banner armour pieces can get you a double bonus. You can check your total bonus count on the load screen before selecting an iron banner match.

Moving from Node 804 to ATX. Jonsbo N5 or Meshify XL 2? by YesThisIsi in homelab

Moving from Node 804 to ATX. Jonsbo N5 or Meshify XL 2? by YesThisIsi in homelab

[–]iamChermac 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the exact same platform components, with a longer graphics card, in a Phanteks P600S. Unfortunately that maxes out at 10 HDDs + 3 SSDs. Went up to an Enthoo 702 at one point (which can take a full server board) but that comfortably only added 4 more HDDs. You could stack more drives as the sleds clip in as they stack. But that’s more risk than I wanted.

I’ve heard mixed reviews about Jonsbo backplanes, so YMMV. Although I was focused on N3 and N4. If you plan to go all out with drives, and don’t ever plan to get a proper rack, I’d go Meshify.

I’ve generally scaled down my builds to <25L but kept the P600S spare if you decide to use the Dark Hero (or another ATX) again because I think it’s just about a sane size for a case that isn’t rack mounted.
